I don't know what it is about Geeee Long but for years now I've thought they were over-rated & we're a big chance on game day.

Despite all evidence suggesting I should adapt, my position remains the same. North by 5pts.

why do people call Geelong the handbaggers btw? Just want a history lesson

They always used to fail in the finals and play soft. After a bad finals loss, Sam Newman on the footy show put up a giant team sheet with all the players and had all different types of handbags for each player.

Pretty sure that was the first time the reference was used. First I’d heard it anyway.

It goes back to the 70’s from my memory. They were always skilled, but a little on the timid side.

Purely guessing, but it has Lou Richards all over it.

In the 90s when our cheer squad did more than chant North Melbourne or let’s go kangas, I recall a chant of:

‘swing those handbags milk those cows’.

So it was obviously used widely enough that we even did a thing with it….

There is opportunities to take the piss out of most clubs that go begging these days.

Yeah no idea why but I'm again confident despite no reason to be. Maybe coz it's BA. Maybe it's just coz I'm expecting a "young side pulls surprise win over the old dog can't accept it's past it's prime" type game. Wishful thinking I guess

Adelaide showed the difference that intense pressure brings to a game. Hope taht we provide that today, rather than our usual 'witches hats' game plan.

I was always told it was because of all the grandmas at Geelong home games used to have big handbags that they used to hit opposition supporters with…

In some of the BF forums there are PIVOTINIAN supporters who claim it was assigned to them by Lou Richards in the 70s for their over-use of handball, but it is far more likely that Louie gave them that nickname because he was painting them as being effeminate Something like this, which was part of popular culture at the time...

Just really interested to see how our forwards move. Have watched a lot of footy this weekend due to having covid.

One thing I’ve noticed is most clubs have some serious forward line movement, set pieces and the big thing… lead at the ball carrier. The more direct the lead the easier for the kicker. Larkey at his best does this extremely well.

Unused leads for us tend to stand where the didn’t receive the ball and clog up space. The best teams have an endless supply of leads and dummy leads that keep even the most congested fwd lines dangerous.

Keen to see some Sydney effort and the hunting the footy mentality we had that day !

Another option, which North seem to be experimenting with is for the tall forwards to stand in a cluster and wave one arm in the air, then when the long bomb comes in, all of the smalls compete in the air to try to outmark the talls. While this tactic hasn't yet shown a lot of success the match comittee seem to be committed so we'll see if it works today. Eventually, the law of averages says it will at some point in time.
