Duigan had to move forward by the sounds of it, which is a huge worry for either him or our key forwards??

If he was moved there because of poor defensive form then where to for him??

If he was moved there because we had no targets then where to for Mitchell, Casboult and Laidler who had Menzel and Waite around them this week???

Not really the case, the midfield was flogged today. When they did get on top in the 2nd quarter and early 3rd quarter the forward line looked good. Duigan went down there late when the game was pretty much over and got a junk time goal.

Ok, no worries.

Midfield getting flogged is a worry for our depth or did they just have a bad day??

Not worried for the result as it was clear today that we were going to play the boundary.
Often avoided going to good leads in the centre of the ground just to go to contests on the wing.
Port just cut us up going through the centre and we'll have to work on that.

We bent ballistic for a 10 minute spell in the third where we looked as though we were going to beat them by ten goals but things slowed down a bit.

Players of note:

Bell really stood up well and tackled hard. Best for us.
Ellard didn't get as much ball as last week but did a lot of good things around the ground. Real competitor as we all know.
Buckley a lot more prominent than last week. Had a good game.
Casboult really got on top in the ruck and we started moving. Not as good as last week, but a performance worth noting.
Waite did all he had to do although I wish he'd stop putting himself in a position where he could be reported. Did some undisciplined things today.
Menzel: Forget the goals, his tackling was the highlight along with a never say dies attitude.
Laidler: Yes and no. Still hasn't really clicked in his new role.
Mitchell: Couldn't have asked any more from him although kicking goals would have been better than kicking points. Leads a lot....gets ignored a lot.

A tad worrying i think considering it was a stand alone midfield they were beaten by.

Which part was worrying? The NB's started slowly and once the rucks got on top we were smashing them.
Meese isn't the best ruck-man going around but we weren't killed around the stoppages as we were by Ports system.

They had too many loose players through the centre whilst we were stuck around the periphery.

Our backline was ordinary though irrespective of the fact the ball was coming down quickly.

When does he have a good day? Hopeless below his knees, lacks intensity, has no football brain, doesn't like body contact, the turning circle of the Queen Mary and those are his good points. Bad pick.
Is our Facebook page down?

Nuff nuffs.

Just back from the game. A very good crowd in, including a significant number of the senior players. The cross-wind made goalkicking difficult at the Northern end of the ground, hence for much of the match the Southern end was the scoring end. Final score Port 16.11.107 v Northern Blues 13.13.91.

Port used the ball better than us & their pressure found us out in the end. Except for the 2nd quarter we struggled to find space & get some sort of spread happening. The following is my impressions of the Carlton listed players' performances.

Bell: I had him as our best player. His bullocking work kept us in the game when Port could have blown us away totally early on. Kicked 3 goals. May get the nod should Gibbs miss.

Bootsma: Got his usual number of spoils, but mostly seemed to be trailing his opponent to the ball. Didn't get enough opportunities to display his kicking skills & if Boots is getting to provide some run & kick from defence, he is a little lost.

Buckley: Loved his game today. Was a bit cute at times, but overall was back to where he was at prior to getting selected in the seniors. Mostly used the ball well & kicked 2 goals. Suffered what looked like a corked buttock late in the game when tunnelled by a Port playing whilst taking a mark.

Cachia: In & under as always, but found it difficult to win enough clean possession due to Port's pressure. Does so much grunt work.

Casboult: Finished the game with 2 goals, but I thought he did his best work when playing on the ball. Clunked some good marks, but is still a bit off from where he was at late last season.

Collins: Flashed in & out of the game, but I felt he didn't play the percentages enough. I think he is a long way off senior selection should a rookie need to be elevated.

Dale: A steady game down back. He would have been relieved not to be standing the opposition's best forward this week. Used the ball well when given the chance & took some good marks.

Duigan: Started the game at FB on Galea & was clearly out of his depth (mind you the delivery to Galea was quite good) & also getting badly sucked in by Galea. Would have been relieved when Galea left the ground with a shoulder injury during the 1st quarter. Fumbled the ball on a number of occasions, particularly below his knees.

Ellard: A good game from Davey. Got a fair bit of the ball, but also struggled to get in the clear & use the ball well due to Port's pressure. It will be between him & Bell should Gibbs miss due to injury.

Joseph: His opponent got away from him early in the 1st quarter, but he tightened up & was probably our best defender on the day. He is probably too good for this level, but that doesn't necessarily translate to senior selection.

Laidler: Was probably our best forward up to half time. Presented well, but didn't get enough ball close to goal to impact the scoreboard. Chased a Port player at one stage & moved the quickest I have seen him move this season.

McCarthy: Not Paddy's best day. Was caught behind way too often & wasn't able to get many effective spoils in. Needs to put today behind him otherwise his confidence will take a hammering.

Menzel: Kicked 2.2, probably would have been 4 if he hadn't struggled to get penetration with his kicks. Unfortunately the ball was kicked on his head on a number of occasions, making it easy for his opponent to spoil. I think he will look quite good with better quality players around him. I wouldn't mind seeing him get a run in the seniors in the next month or so.

Mitchell: Presented well & when the ball was delivered in a decent manner he was too good for his opponent. Kicked 1.3 for the game, but all of his shots on goal were gettable & therefore it could easily have been a 4 goal game. Managed to get separation on his opponent, which was a good sign re: his fitness.

Waite: Blew out the cobwebs & as the game wore on his marking touch was there & he managed to bust a few packs. Didn't kick a goal from his 2 shots on goal, but I don't think anyone was expecting him to come out & dominate. I think another week in the VFL would serve him well, but the Match Committee might be tempted to pick him against Melbourne & let him blow out the rest of the cobwebs in what should be a comfortable win for the seniors.

Watson: Was monstered a bit by Bonaddio & Skipper, but got in some good defensive spoils. Kicked some nice long torps, but then occasionally went short & butchered the thing. I still think he could step up into the seniors comfortably when needed, but is not doing anything to force the selectors' hand.

Overall, the Blues were beaten by a team who ran harder, used the ball better & kicked the goals they should have.

Thanks for the report HARKER.
BOOTSMA named on the wing was interesting.
Did he play there, how did he look?

Edit: thanks for your report too msr

For the most part NB where beaten in most areas of the ground.

The clearences are even an issue in the vfl.

Side note:I enjoyed the win...

Hit the nail on the head Harks. The fact that Bell & Ellard were named as our best players, whilst Port's named best were mostly their forwards & defenders, confirms that the midfield was not where the game was lost. As you say, Port's system when going forward was a lot cleaner than ours because of our compliance to the boundary line game plan.

Harks, you have deadset got to be shitting me? I jokingly said he'd probably get reported in the twos. This bloke has a brick for a brain.

Thats being unfair to bricks mate.

He doesn't mind getting his hands dirty. Wins a fair bit of contested ball. He had a good season last year & has continued well this year. If he could carry this sort of form right through the season he could attract the interest of AFL recruiters.

Would he be any good for us you think?

I see him as a bit of a poor man's Ellard, who is on the periphery of our senior team, so Marcon would only ever be midfield depth at Carlton. I think we will be looking for another quality midfielder at the end of the season, either early in the draft, or a GWS/GCS player who wants to move back to Victoria.
