McKay is a 200cm 19yo player. Perspective people.

Yeah, look at Daniher as a case in point - takes several years for the big men to "develop into their bodies" - we keep saying this, but we want success now and therefore we need to remind ourselves that he is indeed 200cm and only 19! Okay, some rocket out of the blocks (Hipwood) while others are late bloomers, or perhaps offer more on a consistent basis over a longer-period of time. Given he has had a back problem, it's important that Harry develops a strong core over several pre-seasons - this will help ensure sustained performance down the track and hopefully over a sustained period.

...and Daniher would not have got a sniff yesterday playing magoos for us.

Yeah, NBs have went from chocolates to boiled lollies quick smart - Jones, Phillips, Graham and Kerridge were a significant part of the NBs recent success story - the midfield, in particular, has been hit very hard and the forwards have suffered as a result! Pickett, Polson, Sumner and LeBois are off the mark fitness wise - all need big pre-seasons so we can properly assess in 2018.

Byrne plays next week,Sheehan needs a good game today not sure you can play both and especially if willo comes back.Lebois needs to go back to the development league,he is a long way off.Pickett had a better game but still needs to build a tank and mckay is just suffering because he doesn't have a midfield that can kick it to him.Polson started to find form again in a different roll which was pleasing.Kerr/Jgm/Smedts/sumner were ok,the rest of the listed players have run their race I think.

If Byrne is ready to come into the seniors next week and Sheehan has a good game today against Melbourne then we could have both in the same side against Brisbane next week at the Gabba. Maybe we could move Sheehan up onto the wing - his kicking into the forward 50 might be worth looking at; he might even be able to snag a big one from outside 50 - worth a try?

Daniher has nearly 90 games under his belt and is only in the last 12 months starting to play consistent high level football. Takes time

I know we will compare McKay to Daniher because they are very similar players but I also think it's unfair on McKay. Daniher kicked nearly 30 goals in his second year at AFL level and is a star. I think we need to lower our expectations on McKay a little

McKay had a broken back last year. This is effectively his first year of senior footy

I feel sad for Buckley. I really wanted him to make it, but it's looking bad now.
Too many small players at the club getting senior games ahead of him - SPS, Fisher, Lamb, Wright, Cuningham, Sumner even Graham.
The way Dylbucks is kicking around in the 2s, it's like he knows he's gorn. :(

I know so far this year he hasn't achieved much but i feel an uninterrupted pre-season from pickett he will be an absolute machine hes just has moments that are so far beyond vfl level and if it wasn't for a few bad bounces and missed shots he could have gotten so much confidence from that gold coast game earlier in the year. If anyone was wavering in this kids ability or are unsure about his place in our future best 22 just hold out the judgments till the end of next year big things ahead for JP.

It's not just Melbourne it's been a developing style for years.
Even Ratten spoke about fixing the % column before the win column.

A few years ago there was much debate around how players are fitter, faster, stronger but the score line has stayed the same for over 50 years.

When developing a successful team you need to build defence first then control of the game and Tempo, when to go when to not. Then when you can defend and control you attack.

Not a response solely aimed at you HBF but more at everyone talking about our game style
The highlighted bit is so important at the moment.

Last week when Adelaide flew out of the blocks, this is exactly what we did to prevent the game getting away from us. Unfortunately this part of the game is lost on some Carlton supporters who still think a kick backwards or a switch to the other side of the ground should be replaced by a kick to a contest. "The goals are that way."

This sort of play has been going on for several years, yet some still seem to think your best option is a hail mary kick to a contest.

Yes he missed the first half of last season and he is extremely young but he still has never shown the same promise as Daniher had
Daniher spent a significant chunk of his U18 year training with the Dopers. He would have received a massive advantage over everyone else in his U18 year.;)

Run of form looks over, still too many key northern blues in the Carlton side. Massive numbers from Boekhorst again. Some have dropped off like Polson, probably a lack of support from the likes of Kerridge and Graham who aren't playing. Hope to see a big game from Byrne but he's coming from a long way back. Might be time to give McKay a run at center half back and get the footy in his hands a bit. Get him running and jumping at the ball.

The thing with Pickett is he has no fitness base at the moment.

He is only good for a few efforts at a time then makes sloppy mistakes due to being gassed.

Given a good preseason, he will no doubt be able to play solid footy with the flashes of brilliance we see now, thrown on top.

He seemed to go up a notch on the weekend. Not quite enough to be selected, but it was there to see if you bothered to look.

Give it another fortnight and we'll revisit this point.

Daniher would have gone pick one if he wasn't a f/s. Harry needs to be chained to the squat rack over the off-season break to build up quad/core strength something he wouldn't have been able to do with stress fractures to the back.

Josh Frazer's review of the weekends efforts in the VFL: http://www.carltonfc.com.au/sites/Carlton/news/2017-07-12/vfl-player-review-round-12

I watched around 80% of the game on TV and have noted my observations under a few of Josh's quotes;

62. Blaine Boekhorst
Stats: 32 disposals, 10 marks, 7 rebound 50s, 1 goal
From the coach: Again, Blaine was prolific in winning the ball and he had some really exciting moments in traffic to our advantage. He keeps working hard on areas of his game. He's been pretty consistent for us across the season.

He's had a couple of chances in the AFL but fails to hold his position. I think this is as good as he's going to get.

7. Dylan Buckley
Stats: 11 disposals, 5 tackles
From the coach: He’s not impacting to the level as he’d like but we don’t think his best is too far away. He’s played more on the wing in recent weeks. If he can win more of his own footy and start using his speed we know how dangerous he can be for us.

Looks to have given up on senior selection. Hope not, would be a good small forward if he can get consistency in front of goal. Kicks like a mule.

59. Ciaran Byrne
Stats: 12 disposals, 6 marks
From the coach: I thought Casey’s game was really exciting given where he’s coming back from. His positioning was as good as it’s been since coming back from injury. He was really clean in possession while also having some terrific intercept marks. It was a really promising game from him.

Easily the best (Northern) Blue out there. Looked to have AFL touch and made good position when defending. Reads the play well and is super clean with the ball. I expect a return to the senior side in tomorrow's selection.

48. Kristian Jaksch
Stats: 16 disposals, 7 marks, 3 rebound 50s
From the coach: We’re trying to work really hard on his work-rate away from the contest and how he can impact the game through his positioning defensively. He competed really well in the contest: the next step is ensuring he’s proactive when the ball is away from his area at all times.

In a word - Lazy. Must go at the end of the year.

80. Matthew Korcheck
Stats: 6 disposals, 36 hitouts, 1 goal
From the coach: He competed really well, and he was one of our better players on the day. Again he went forward and kicked a goal while also having another opportunity. He’s added a different dimension that’s made him an important asset for us.

Unsure why Josh praised him so highly. Wins the taps with his height but barely jogs (actually walked on a few occations) around the ground to the next contest. Doesn't do much else except ruck. No chance at AFL unless there is no-one else left.

Minimum 5 to come off that starting XVIII given the Sunday game for us. No real surprises at this stage.
