Michael "Mick" Malthouse (born 17 August 1953) is a retired Australian rules footballer and the former coach of three Australian Football League (AFL) clubs. In 2012 he was appointed as the next coach of Carlton. Although his playing career included a premiership for Richmond in the VFL, he is best known for his AFL coaching career.
Malthouse is the most successful coach in the history of the West Coast Eagles, holding several club coaching records including the most grand final appearances (1991, 1992, 1994), most premierships (1992 and 1994, both against Geelong), as well as the highest win ratio.
The 1992 Grand Final win was the first AFL premiership won by a team from outside Victoria and was the West Coast Eagles' first ever senior premiership.
Malthouse also coached Collingwood to grand finals in 2002, 2003, 2010 and 2011; with success in the 2010 Grand Final Replay, leading Collingwood to its first premiership since 1990.

Carlton overachieved this year. I really thought 11-12th was realistic, but they certainly proved me wrong.

I think Malthouse will propel the club back to their rightful place in 5th-8th. That's the point where flogs can harp on about the next year, but the pea hearted players don't actually need to push to do anything more.

For a cowardly club, that cheats, or doesn't bother competing... climbing back up to that treasured 5th spot in the next 5-8 years would be a superb result. Think of all the membership slogans!

I won't bore you with the easy reply - you know the one that says - pantzed your pretenders twice this year, second time around with a VFL squad I might add ..No a better reply is to acknowledge the weakness that forced change...I think the trick is to make sure some of the weaker willed get culled - hmmm I reckon that will take Micky Milkshake all of a pre-season to sort out..don't you? Wherever Carlton finishes next year- rest assured - it will be above your side - and you can take that to the Bank..
