I've witnessed some bizarre stuff over the years at local footy and today was another one of those WTF moments. Umpires telling the club to stop their supporters from barracking or they will pay free kicks to the opposition. Best people start wearing opposition colours that will confuse them.

Where was this

In all leagues they are basically trying to get supporters to move away from the coaches areas. Basically they want zero swearing from the benches and supporters obviously can’t help themselves… perhaps it was that?

Surely there is not actually a rule in the book that allows that.

If crowds are unruly it’s an issue for the clubs and league, not the umpires.

Not sure East Burwood or Mulgrave have particularly bad reputations?

Having said that I can’t really name
many EFL clubs that do.

To threaten a club with on-field penalties with what's going on over the fence is absurd. Sure make a complaint to the club and let them address it, I think clubs have been fined for such incidents. What next, you don't like the coffee that's served so pay a free kick to the opposition?

On the umpires, I have no idea what's going on these days as the umpires rarely come into the rooms after the game. All clubs are welcoming and happy to provide a bite to eat, even a beverage.

It is a bit of a vicious cycle, there are no umpires so the standard is lower than ever, people get more frustrated and yell more, the umps feel worse and probably want to give it away, they don’t feel like socialising after the game (I understand that tbh).

I maintain the best thing they can do as a circuit breaker is to immediately increase the wages. The pay is ridiculously low. It’s simple economics, you will attract more. It needs to be a viable part-time job. If you look at the hours involved and what they get paid now, it’d be barely min wage. It’s disgraceful.

Double the pay immediately to start with. Unfortunately everybody will just have to pay for it. You can’t have such an enormous drop off of numbers and just expect to be able to change nothing.

Here is the numbers, this is a bugbear of mine

Senior field umpires are paid $147 per match

It is a minimum 4 hours on matchday and 4 hours training (2x 2hrs) during the week.

That is $18 per hour, plus the time and money to travel all over the joint - not as though you’re working at the local shops.

I’ll be generous and call it $15 an hour all up.

In a job where you are joined by 50 fired-up and passionate young men hanging on your every move and screaming at your errors.

Plus probably 500-1000 other people watching doing the same thing.

I honestly can’t believe we have a single umpire, let alone hundreds of them.

They seem to try to sell it as a “sport” that you get paid to “participate in”.

What planet are they on

They are officials doing a critical job.

Double the pay immediately to $300 / game and go from there.

Clubs just have to cop it and pass it on. Happy to pay six figures per year for players, this is just reality.

2x field umpires is $600 per match ($300 per club). $5400 per year per team.

Ask the question, how many EFNL football games have you watched this year.I was at a D1 U19 game today and a full squad of umpires today including 2 field.Reserves clubs had to supply goal umpires, boundary umpires.Strange one with boundary umpires in U19,s they do not throw the ball in as play junior rules and if ball goes out of bounce the field umpire does a ball up.On the full rule rule is the same as it used to be.

Strongly disagree with your comments ,most clubs are struggling to stay afloat now with excess expenses. especially the clubs at the bottom end of their clubs ladders.

Then clubs (and spectators) need to be ok with
1) there not being enough umpires full stop/needing to supply their own
2) the quality of what’s left to be sub-par

The league reported 1.759 mill in cash or cash equivalents in their 2023 financials, with limited liabilities.
Perhaps they can afford to pay umpires more.

I mentioned earlier how I don't see Umpires in the rooms after games. I don't know how widespread this is. With Umpire abuse you can decrease that if the umpires mingle with the people after the game. No club would tolerate anyone abusing umpires in rooms. Segregation makes it a US vs. them mentality for many. Monash Uni believed that people don't abuse someone they know personally and that is simply meeting an umpire after a game and having a chat. I remember years ago umpires would always be in the rooms and socialising and sometimes they had to leave their cars there and pick them up the next day. One umpire I remember was Warren Hillier, he was great in the rooms and talked to everyone. There would be banter over the boundary line but rarely was there abuse. I will add you are not going to stop that 1% of idiot and in saying that most clubs do their best to clear them out and clubs get put on notice about that and should be penalised (fined) if they don't address that. It has to be a multi-pronged approach. I will add disagreeing with a decision isn't abuse but we have that rule, at least the AFL has started to ignore that unless it's extreme.

I also agree with increasing the salary as it's supply and demand. In any other industry with an in-demand workforce salary's go up. $60 extra a match for the Senior Umpire is a slab of beer, people don't mind handing those out to players after a game. You could have an Umpire levy on alcohol or the gate. Sure you are taking the money away from clubs but if there are no umpires there's no income.

Umpires have been paying free kicks for crowd abuse for a number of years. Its not an every game scenario but I've seen it 3 times in different games. The problem was in one of those instances the free kick was awarded to the wrong side. Umpire was questioned at break as to whether they can pay crowd abuse free kicks and they said they can.

Umpires boss was sent a please explain and the response was the umpire believed the abuse come from the bench, however the free kick was paid well away from the bench and the umpire clearly looked at the perpetrator in the crowd and said "free kick crowd abuse".

These were nowhere near the bench. They were behind the goals. It's simply pathetic penalising a team for what spectators do. Collingwood wouldn't win a game under these circumstances.

Im not arguing with you. 2 of the 3 i have seen have not been near the bench either. But when a please explain was sent out, the response from the umpires department was the umpire believed it to be from the bench. Even though everyone there knew that not to be the case. The umpires were clearly calling crowd abuse and had a licence to do so.

The other option would be to control your supporters behaviour. When they have been paid in games i saw everyone shut up pretty fast.

I agree with controlling idiots, hence EB sent people to the group. Crowd abuse? Disputing decisions without vulgarity isn't crowd abuse, umpires have become too precious these days.

Another huge round of footy

  • Vermont knock off the undefeated Noble Park for their first win of the year
  • Balwyn huge win against Rowville to go to the top of the ladder
  • East Ringwood win a 1 point classic against Blackburn
  • Wantirna South in all sorts after getting smashed by Mitcham who keep in touch with the top 5
  • Doncaster 2 in a row! Not bad for a team that folded 10 times in the off season and should have dropped 2 divisions.
  • South Belgrave have lost their aura. Still very competitive but no longer invincible.
  • East Burwood win and off the bottom of the ladder.
  • Lilydale 2 in a row!
  • The Basin didn't respond to their coach getting sacked. Mini final for them V East Burwood this week.
  • Surrey Park big statement win away at Coldstream
  • Warrandyte win! Huge win against FTG to breathe life into their season.
  • FTG on the bottom and in massive trouble. Need to beat Fairpark at home this week.
  • Forest hill upset win over Chirnside Park to keep their finals door slightly open
  • Whitehorse big win against Scoresby and will be on top of the ladder if they beat Nunawading this week.
