I think Box Hill may have been used as a secondary finals venue for Div 1 a number of years ago.

If I remember correctly (and I may not) the thinking was that it’s not really close enough to “traditional” EFL heartland (the outer east) and so crowds would be affected.

The other thing is money. EFL clubs pay the league to host finals and the club organises and staffs it all. If it were at Box Hill assume the league would have to pay to use it and organise all the operations.

The EFL is in a far better financial situation than any other league and I reckon their finals model is probably a big part of that. Not that they ever seem to spend the money on anything, like better admin or umpiring.

As I said Mitcham for mine is close to VFL standard and by far the best venue in the league. Why they became so fixated on Bayswater, I don’t know.

Interesting, the VAFA pay clubs to host finals, the club gets all bar and canteen takings whilst the league keeps the gate receipts.

I assume judging by the people on the gate, the EFL also would be keeping gate receipts, a nice money spinner if clubs are also paying then for the rights.

Mitcham has good facilities, but ground is probably a bit small for the premier game. But Bayswater facilities haven’t changed in a long, long time and the ground was disgraceful today.

But you’re right on not spending money on umpires, they are easily the lowest paid of any league in Victoria and the standard showed today. It was nice to see some new faces for a change, but the overall standard is terrible, they can’t attract any decent umpires.

Boronia is in the Bayswater electorate in the state government. The local member has been a good supporter but he doesn’t have a big influence around the decision making table as he is a backbencher. Unfortunately also the state government is pretty much broke which doesn’t help community sport in any form.

Plus the current federal government cancelled all sports club funding when they took power, had to appease the Greens who’d like every oval turned in to dog parks.

All major infrastructure projects from the outgoing government were subject to assessment by the incoming government. That's a normal process. Many projects were scrapped, but the Tormore Reserve project was approved on its merits.

Wearing my Mitcham Football Club hat I might be biased yet again but to have over 100 plus volunteers after our awesome win last Saturday to turn up last Sunday made a old man like myself so proud.Up to the EDFNL and all you guys that worry about the size of WP for Premier Finals. As a club we appreciate all the compliments we have received about how we host finals and on and off field we will continue to rebuild our club in our biggest STEP,the return to Premier dIVISION.

Well the moment has passed to use mitcham for prem finals given they are in prem now. That being said they probably don’t make prem finals next year so….

Agree EFNL need to look past Boronia and Bayswater. Both very run down and the surface is an embarrassment.

I was against Ringwood previously but i think they have a lot going for them now, the surface is immaculate but they have very little to no cover and people aren't allowed on the balcony during finals.

Looks like there is 1 left but didn’t play in the 2016 flag.

Jayme Gottliebsen played 2012, 2013 & 2015. Looks to be one took from North Ringwood juniors.
You are correct, he actually has some family history at Balwyn. Played a couple of ressies games for them in 2011 whilst still playing Under 18s at North Ringwood.

It might be here in 10 years and $142M later.

I went to a Div 3 grand final at Box Hill in maybe 2002/2003

Didn’t Boronia win a flag at Waverley Park 😊
That was East Burwood in 2000, only year EFL played there I believe. Might be available again once Hawthorn move to Doveton Dingley.
I also went to a final many years ago at Box Hill. If I remember correctly Blackburn beat East Ringwood in a close one. I think it was the year Balwyn won their first flag in the EFL. If that's correct, Box Hill was probably only used in the semis because I watched the Balwyn v Vermont game and it was at Bayswater.

Looks like work has all ready started at Boronia and does that include a ground surface upgrade as well?

No, the funding covers the pavilion only. The surface at Tormore was generally good throughout this season but clearly didn't cope with the wear and tear of the Division 1 finals series and the sustained heavy rain overnight and during the grand final day. Some suggest the grass was cut too short as well.

Waverley isn’t fit for any footy without major work. There’s no changerooms (just Hawthorn’s own facilities), no coaches boxes, no umpires facilities, timekeeping, siren, nothing.

Even then there’s no fence for entry and very, very little parking - even the streets around it are very narrow and don’t allow street parking.

Just re checked the Boronia FB page and it seems a new fence and new coaching boxes going in.Good to see Knox council who have received a few negative posts on BF of late playing their part.

I agree, at the moment it isn't suitable. But Monash Council are dead set keen to keep the oval and stand. So it remains to be seen what happens. Even if it never becomes suitable for finals, you would think Mulgrave would be interested in playing there.

I think Keilor probably beats them both.
Bunk yours fairly astute fella of local footy who would be you top 10 ranked clubs (Metro / Country) this year if there was such a ranking scale? Obviously a few of the favourites in their respective competitions got beaten this year eg: Yarrawonga and Dromana but they would still be up there! Curious to know 🤔

I really wouldn’t know tbh. I don’t watch enough these days and it’s very hard to compare across leagues if the clubs don’t play each other.

One thing I would say is imo no country footy is on the level of metro footy these days. There just isn’t the population to draw from. They can buy all the FIFO imports they like but it doesn’t match the depth and recruiting pool that metro clubs have. People still talk about how strong O&M etc is and while it’s good footy, it’s not what it was. The top metro leagues are better.

From afar it looks like there is the usual strong suspects like Frankston YCW, Dingley, Cheltenham, Heidelberg and Keilor who are getting it done (or close) every year. Interestingly the EFL seems to not have that standout club or two at the moment, which is great. It’s a lot more even with different premiers over the past five years. Where they rank against those other clubs, I don’t know.

I remember watching finals at Vermont about 10 years ago. I reckon Ringwood won in extra time final.

I thought it was great viewing there.

How likely are the sides above under the salary cap?

Old Brighton would be right up there too
