I am getting a reasonably reliable tip that the NRL are about to announce life bans on 6 players and a manager for match fixing. I have the names, but will not name them incase it is false.

It got me to thinking though, match fixing, point shaving etc, potentially could be present in our game. I hope not, but I would be really dissapointed if our game were to be touched by this scurge. If Proffesional athletes in the NRL can be bought, it is reasonable to think that AFL players could be approched.

Is this just another reason for the NRL to pay their players better?

It's a lot harder to spot fix in AFL than it is in NRL or Cricket (and the current case in the NRL - as far as I know - and the current Pakistan crisis in cricket is spotfixing, not matchfixing). Not impossible though. There's so much we can bet on - first goal, most disposals out of these players etc. It's silly to say it couldn't happen, and it's almost impossible to detect if it does happen.

The only reason why people found out about the NRL case is because too many people had a bet on it. Same with cricket, no-one would have found about the no-balls if the papers hadn't organised it and announced it.

But matchfixing - as in actually deciding the match - would be almost impossible to do in AFL.

Anyone notice a certain "name" player who has retired but not at the motorcade at the grand final today? What's interesting is that there is one player who has been named which will make this story even bigger if true.

I didn't notice at the time, but yes. And yes, there are some well knowns in there. 1 from the Storm too allegedly.

yes there are multiple bet types that look at individuals/moments of a game, but with such high possession counts & high scoring compared to other sports, it would be very hard to influence a game, or even a moment, without pretty much the whole team involved.

lets face it - one sloppy tackle to stop a try, one sloppy backpass to the keeper, one foot well over the bowlers crease - all sports with betting having the ability to influence what happens.
in AFL, 1st goalkicker, 1st score type, margins, most possessions, etc etc all need several people linking together to make it happen, or to happen first. too hard to influence betting with confidence.

This would be why betting on any result by anybody associated with the AFL is treated so seriously. It could be possible to construe which player is most likely to kick the first goal on your team but then it needs multiple players in on it. The other possibility is that one defender is in on it and intentionally gives a freekick to his opponent close to goal, similar to what happened in the NRL where the player was accused of intentionally fouling the opponent directly in the middle of the field so that a penalty goal was a valid option, the opponents went for the try though. If a defender ever gives away a freekick and the ball is at the other end of the field and the ball goes downfield to where the infringement occurs then it would have to be a serious possibility of fixing.

Rose coloured glasses, ask carlton about that, school holidays?

Perhaps the fixing of a match is too difficult to organise, but what about giving money to a defender to give a free kick away in the 1st minute of the match against a particular player and consequently 'fix' the first goalkicker of a match?

You'd only need one player in on it.

It didn't work out anyway because the cowboys scored a try rather then kicking the penalty goal which is what all the bets were placed on.

Yeah, well looks like someone has put all the names in this thread. Haha.

If true, Cooper Cronk will finally get his chance.

Not at all - you just need to get in a coaches ear.

Match fixing happens most years in the last month or so as teams jockey for draft picks.

You drop good players, play blokes out of position, don't make changes to strategy to try and win etc etc.

It's called tanking - but in reality it is just match fixing

But would not the captain of the Cowboys be able to chose to kick for goal, which they did not, thus making the plunge lose??
