my mate's buggered his computer, and it needs a format.

he pretty much cant get into anything so ive put his HD into my pc to try and copy over some of the data he needs.

I cannot open the My Documents folder on his hard drive. Access is denied.

Is there any way to get around this?? somehow we need to get in, 80% of the stuff he wants to keep is in this folder..

If he has chosen to protect it from other users when given the option, then I don't believe their is anyway at all.

The only thing you can try doing is to try and repair (their's an option, it may work) the installation on his/her computer, then move the files

Assuming that he hasn't encrypted it (in which case you are completely buggered), try the following

(These instructions are for Windows 2000, but they should be a near fit on XP)

- Right click on the folder
- Select the "Security" tab
- Click "Advanced"
- Click on the "Owner" tab
- Under "change owner to" select Administrator or whoever you're currently logged on as
- Check the box at the bottom labelled "Replace owner on subcontainers..."
- Click OK.

Hopefully you should be able to access the folder now.

its all good i figured it out.

THe hard drive was reading, it was just his my documents folder i couldnt read. I done pretty much wat mr q said except i had to log in under administrator. (even though i have full administrator rights on my account i still couldnt do it in mine).
