I know 3 players numbers off the top of my head - Jones, Watts and Trengove. Shows how little i care. I'm still hoping one day they'll adopt player names above jumpers - good first gamers/rookies/some players look similar to others/teams you dont know much about (couldn't tell you who half of ports list are by face). It'd be even better for those that don't get to the footy much or are new to the game.

If i was a player, i wouldn't want the number of someone else who had been huge at the club. I'd just want whatever number was free and to then try my hardest to make it my own.

Give it to a nobody, doesn't deserve any special treatment.

At North we just pretended 18 didn't exist for a few years. Then Brad Moran stuck his hand up for it in and it saw the light of day again in 2006. That didn't work out. Then Josh Smith, who didn't exactly set the world on fire, had it for two years.

Then we gave it to Shaun Atley at the start of last year and there was absolutely no hoo-haa or any big deal. Yes it will always be Duck's number but now it has lost the evil mojo it had.

The moral of the story is that it took nearly ten years and two duds to decontaminate the number.

I'm not going to tell you guys what to do on your own board, I can only suggest that the forget it about it then give it to some blokes who aren't big news draft picks etc strategy worked for us.

It doesn't bother me, Scully played less than forty games, there was no real sentimental attachment. I reckon Viney will get it and do it justice
