Not the best game between the Avs and Isles, so let's begin this discussion.

All the rosters are set, and we're only a month away from what's going to be a great tournemant.

First time Canadian NHL players have played for their country at a home Winter Olympics, that alone should make this great viewing.

Another thing that makes this so exciting is that it seems every big 7 country has a shot of medalling, although Slovakia and Czech Republic look a bit weak.

Imagine if the old Czechoslokia was still going round, ie combine those two rosters, and there really would be the old big 6 back in business. In fact they'd be hard pressed not to medal, if they were still together.

For example.
Elias Plekanec Havlat
Gaborik Krejci Hossa
Michalek Handzus Jagr
Erat Kopecky Palffy

Chara Meszaros
Kaberle Visnovsky
Zidlicky Michalek

Vokoun
Halak

That's enough rosters from me, bring on USA vs Switzerland on the 17th of Feb.!

It depends on what Channel 9 wants to show. I assume it will be one of the priority sports, but given its FTA - the coverage will probably be shit in terms of adverts and then all of the sudden during a break in play they'll flick away and never come back. Or forget to come back after intermission. Not sure what to expect from Foxtel.

I fully expect that between Channel 9 and Foxtel's Creekside channel that us hockey fans won't go missing any of the big games. Heck, we may even get all of them in some form or another.

Creekside will be the winner.

Foxtel has dedicated channels, so I'm pretty sure they will show entire games.

Channel 9 is a bit unknown given it was Channel 7 that did it in previous years.

Last Olympics, Channel 7 showed highlights of preliminaries and quarter finals, extended highlights of the semi final and bronze medal game and the full game of the gold medal game. The highlights of all games up to gold medal game shown on TV fit on one four hour tape.

Hopefully Channel 9 shows a bit more. In addition to the gold medal game, a full game for the two semi finals will definately be an improvement.

No way it will be a priority sport - No Aussies completing and not really fit for family viewing in prime time despite the fact there will be little to none fighting done in these tournaments.

Havent included replays of games, only first run of each game. Channel 9 doesn't seem to have a guide up as yet so can't check what games they will run. Knowing them though it would probably be 5 minutes then go to something else.

Channel 9 have shown contempt for hockey in the past. They will show zero group games live and if there is an exhibition figure skating session that clashes with the final they will show that tripe before the gold medal game (they did last time). Not sure if I will shell out the bickies for Fox's coverage. I will be at work for some of the games I would want to watch, unless I can IQ them which might persuade me.

Sweden v Finland is always a treat to watch. Any fights in an Olympic game will happen there and maybe Russia and Finland or the Czechs.

Monday 22nd is the big day, two live awesome games.

Edit: TheStinger, all the Vancouver channels are not Red Button channels, so you can IQ them. Now that I know this I am going to get the package incase I have refound employment by then.

Well that may just put me over. I really do want to see the Yanks v Canucks game as well as some others.

Reckon on the smaller surface goaltending will play a big factor.

If you look at it, sure Brodeur's on fire, and either Nabokov or Bryzgalov will do well for the Russians, not forgetting Lundqvist, Kiprusoff or Vokoun; there's good goaltending in Vancouver.

But I can see Miller influencing enough games for the USA so that they finish not where would we expect them too, but to finish a little bit better, perhaps even medal. He'll pinch that extra game or two, to give them say 3rd instead of 5th.

Don't underestimate the USA whilst they go into the tournemant with the guy who at this stage is winning the Vezina.

I just cant go past Russias top 6 forwards and top 4 D men, F'ing brilliant. And bryzgalov is one of the most underrated goal tenders in the world at the moment..bryz and nabakov is close to as good a duo as any..

Though i think they should put Datsyuk with Ovechkin, in the olympics Ovechkins lack of defense could be an area where opposing teams could swarm, he rarely gets found out in the NHL because of the lack of talent/depth to beat him, but i think it could in the olympics, datsyuk, of the stud forwards on that line up is the most responsible both ways, and has the sick moves to feed ovie, then they could pair malkin with kovalchuk...

You can't argue with 4 of the top 5 best players in the world (Ovechkin, Malkin, Datsyk, Kovalchuk) and in addition, Markov is a top 5 defenseman in the world and Nabokov is definately top 10 goaltender possibly on the fringe of top 5.

Canada probably has a better overall squad and way more depth but if those guys you mentioned get hot, they might drag Russia to the gold medal.

If?

Ovechkin and Kovalchuk are both Top 10 for points despite having played less than 40 games - I'd suggest they are hot and there is no reason to think that'd stop. Datsyuk and Malkin are both better players than their respective numbers at Washington and Atlanta so it's not like the supply is going to be cut off.

Canada and Russia for mine. If there's going to be a disappointment I'd tip Sweden, and the Slovaks for the surprise package.
