Good radio interview with Silvagni here also interesting to here him say how teams were not prepared to give up players for the mini draft so we were forced in a way to chase high draft picks

Exactly what I have suspected. Really was the only way things would work out in practice. And you really had to throw money at experienced players to make them move.

Greater Western Sydney is also understood to be interested in Hansen, whom the Giants could sign up until October 19 as an uncontracted player (for draft compensation) - or through the pre-season draft for no compensation to the Roos.

Adelaide is pursuing a replacement for Kurt Tippett - despite that deal for a move to Sydney still not advancing yesterday - with a three-year offer understood to be in place for the Giants' Jonathan Giles.

I don't know how much Giles has been offered, but considering the opportunity you guys gave him after he did SFA for 4 years at his previous club, he really should repay his faith a little in my view.... played one good season and wants it on a silver platter.....

From the Silvagni interview on 5AA: "Ideally we wanted to go out and get some senior players with these 17 year old boys, but for some reason, out of luck really... they had some real value. Having said that, we were probably looking to get some senior experience through the door with those particular picks. But having spoken to probably all of the clubs, the players that I was trying to get through the door, they were probably reluctant to give up, which was understandable." Who? Give us some examples: "I was targeting players between 22 and 24 years of age. Those picks that I had, what I ended up getting for them at the end of the day was probably pick 2 and pick 4, they were quite valuable. So obviously for me to trade those picks for a player, you think you'd want a fairly quality player to come through the door."

Isn't Giles' problem with the length of contract not the dollars? It's not a case of "pay the man" but "keep the man". He wants 4, the Giants want 2 with an option for 3. Surely the compromise is 3 with an option for 4. It's not rocket surgery.

SOS seemed to indicate it was the cash.

Thanks for the quote, I had problems getting the thing to play.

As I posted on the Brisbane board, it does make sense that we couldn't get players when you think about it if you think about it in terms of value. GWS essentially got two first round picks for both MD picks in 2011 and picks 2 and 3 for them in 2012. Now think about what kind of player swaps clubs for that kind of value and you're looking at the type of player that only swaps clubs if they want to leave. They're not players clubs give up willingly. Judd would be one example slightly above this value, Burgoyne is about the right point and Jolly a bit below. All left their club, their clubs didn't put them up for trade.

He's a professional, and so are we, and thats a risk we ran when we signed him to a short initial deal.

He seems to have been offered a better deal off Adelaide, and possibly Collingwood as well.

Me, I say Pay The Man.

It may also need to be noted that Giles will be 25 at the start of next season and has missed a lot of the AFL pay days most of his generation players have had. He just wants a quick fill of his bank account because his afl ride will be shorter.

On the flip side though the chance of becoming the Giants first cult hero might be a longer life pay day he doesn’t see yet.

I'd love to keep him too mate but I also think SOS and the crew have to be careful in what precedents and benchmarks they set. Realistically he has come from the Port Adelaide reserves and had one good year. I think our salary cap situation is not as rosy as some people think as we have front loaded a few contracts of some of our major purchases, plus we have the ridiculous situation of having to include Phil Scully's wage for the next 5 years

Whilst I can't believe he is a $150,000 player (particularly if the average wage of an AFL player is now $250,000) I also know that if we are not throwing big money then there would be a very legitimate reason.

We obviously have to be very careful how we manage our wage structure with so many potential A graders on our list.

Hope we keep him but won't be slashing my wrists if he's collateral damage for the bigger picture.

why not offer Giles heavily front loaded contract?

As for his history, at Port it would have been hard to get a gig behind Brogan and Lade dont you think? Good apprenticeship, and 24 is about the age when ruckmen start showing something.

Because that cap room got spent on Scully, Davis, Ward and 13 rookies.

So are you guys under the assumption your already full with your cap and not much room to move?

Yes, I believe GWS have filled their cap with as much frontloading as possible.

I am sure the plan is to go into each year with a full salary cap. So if things happen such as players being unexpectedly good - well, then we lose out.

Part of the problem here as well, as I think they undervalue rucks.

Yeah fair assessment...I just find it really fascinating GC and GWS' growth and development in how they are structured.

e.g. Considering we had the ability of offer Tippett 700k for 5 years, while GWS cant increase Giles from I guess 200k to 350k? I'm just taking a stab here ;)

Positive news in that the club has made movement, hopefully the negotiation continues.

@traderadio
SOS says the Giants have moved on the Giles contract situation, but his management hasn't #AFLTrades
