WGS - Thanks Sam, marvellous to be here with you on this fine evening, so what do you want to talk about, my back-to-back Test and ODI BnF's that I'm going to leave with at the end of tonight? Or what about this awesome suit that I'm wearing? Or my missus? No not my missus, the suit, let's talk about the suit. Yes this is a custom Armani suit, $4,000 and I paid for it with the money that I'm going to win tonight for being awesome. Okay thanks, good chat, I'll talk to you later, chao!
SF - Well then.........back to you John.
JD - Well, Sam sure is confident, wouldn't you agree Sally?

THB - It's an honour to be here Sally, John, I'm very excited about tonight.
JD - Well THB, it sure has been a trying year for the Phoenix, not too many victories on the board but there sure has been plenty of star outings by most players this season. And to see young blood coming through with the likes of Gibbsy, Eth and Broken , the future sure is bright for the Phoenix. Anyway, gotta go, counts about to start, lovely to see you again.

JD - You heard it folks, the count is only moments away. We will be back soon for the start of the count.

Welcome Ladies, Gentleman and Filthy Sanchez, to the Blaze Tower here on the North Island for the Northern Phoenix Best and Fairest count for the 2013/14 season. The season was a less than impressive one with only two Tests wins for the year. The ODI arena was a little more successful with the Phoenicians managing 5 wins out of 14 games. First of all I would like to thank our sponsors tonight, the good folk at North Island KFC for providing lunch every game, Telstra for providing marvelous phone coverage at every venue in the league and Moe’s Tavern for all the after game functions.

Now folks, let’s start with the Test season.

ROUND 1

The Northern Phoenix boys headed out to Punt Road to take on the Fighting Furies to open their campaign. After a mediocre first inning, the Phoenix had put 320 runs on the board with The Half Back (102) opening his season with a ton and okeydoke7 (85) impressed in his first inning in orange notching up a splendid half century. The bowlers didn’t get off to the greatest of starts, letting the Furies openers put on 120+ before Broken struck through for the first time this season. The Furies continued to pile on runs though and ended up with a healthy 117 run first innings lead. Eth was the leading wicket taker with figures of 3/124, whilst Deddy (2/83), Easty (2/80) and Broken (2/48) all chipped in with 2 wickets a piece. There was not much to speak of in the Phoenix second dig after getting rolled for just 180 with Wise Guy Sam (40) and Broken (38) leading the way with the bat. With a target of only 64 to win, the Furies were always likely to win this match and did it comfortably only 2 wickets down. Broken (2/10) was the lone wicket taker in the second innings and the Phoenix went down by 8 wickets.

NORTHERN PHOENIX LOST BY 8 WICKETS

Northern Phoenix – 320 (The Half Back 102, okeydoke7, Claypigeon 30)

Fighting Furies – 437 (Eth 3/124)

Northern Phoenix – 180 (Wise Guy Sam 40, Broken 38)

Fighting Furies 2/67

ROUND 2

The Phoenix were on the road again in round 2, this time travelling to The Ganglands to take on the Kings Cross Mariners. After a rather disappointing effort at Punt Road last week, the boys were out to redeem themselves against the Mariners. After losing the toss, the Phoenix were told made to bowl first on a normal pitch. The boys started of well rolling through the Mariners for just 208. Deddy (4/51) was the chief destroyer with his ripping leggies on day one. Gee Dub (2/32) and Easty (2/40) also chipped in. Filthy Sanchez (142) smashed the Mariners to all parts with 28 boundaries and 1 maximum. Wise Guy Sam (43) and Eth (35) also helped the Phoenix build a lead of 147 runs. The Mariners showed some fight in their second innings putting on 379 runs and leaving the boys with a target of 253. Easty made the most of an aging pitch picking up 4/89. Broken (2/79) again took wickets and Deddy (2/70) ended up with 6 wickets for the match. Filthy Sanchez (62) back up his first innings century, captain Claypigeon (60) steered home the victory whilst okeydoke7 (51) and Wise Guy Sam (31) continued their fine form with the bat.

ROUND 3

After starting 1-1, the Phoenicians played their first game at the Fire Pit for the year against the West Coast Warriors. Claypigeon did what was necessary and won the toss and chose to bowl first. Easty (4/60) dominated with the ball again, whilst Broken and Deddy both chipped in with 2 a piece. Wise Guy Sam (95) top scored and had plenty of help from Claypigeon (38), Filthy Sanchez (36), The Half Back (34) and okeydoke7 (31). Only 6 runs behind after the first innings, the bowlers were tight in the second dig, with Broken the star picking up 4/83. Easty (3/80) ended up with 7 wickets for the match. Wise Guy Sam (118) top scored after bringing up his first century for the season, Claypigeon (75) continued his first innings form, The Half Back (48) and Eth (39) also chipped in. The target of 359 runs for victory was just a little too much for the boys as they fell just 3 runs short.

NORTHERN PHOENIX LOST BY 3 RUNS

West Coast Warriors – 316 (Easty 4/60)
Northern Phoenix – 310 (Wise Guy Sam 95, Claypigeon 38, Filthy Sanchez 36, The Half Back 34, okeydoke7 31)

JD - Well folks, it's tight at the top of the leaderboard this early in the piece with Easty the top bowler with all rounders Eth and Broken polling well. Well what do you think about that start Eth ?? Good start to the year from yourself?

B - Hello Sally, I'm doing well. I'm so happy that one of my Phoenix teammates is leading the count, I hope that I can win but if not, my guess would be Gee Dub or Filthy Sanchez.
JD - Now I believe we have some entertainment lined up for you, and trust me, it's better than meatloaf, without further a do, THE SCRIPT!!!

ROUND 4

Round 4 saw the boys head west to Woodville Oval to take on the Western Woodpeckers. Filthy Sanchez (130) backed up his ton against the Mariners with another well crafted century in the west. Claypigeon (59) and The Half Back (55) brought up half centuries and Speck (45) and Wise Guy Sam (39) helped the Phoenix to a 400+ run first innings. The bowlers were again on top with an even spread of wicket takers with Deddy’s tweakers (3/27) and Eth’s left arm chinamen (3/57) led the way with help from Broken (2/30) and Gee Dub (2/45). Wise Guy Sam (70), The Half Back (60) and Claypigeon (54) help build a 468 run lead heading into the last innings. Broken (5/82) and Gee Dub (4/41) tore through the Peckers leaving them 185 runs short of the target.

NORTHERN PHOENIX WON BY 185 RUNS

Northern Phoenix – 409 (Filthy Sanchez 130, Claypigeon 59, The Half Back 55, Speck 45, Wise Guy Sam 39)
Western Woodpeckers – 225 (Deddy 3/27, Easty 3/57)
Northern Phoenix – 283 (Wise Guy Sam 70, The Half Back 60, Claypigeon 54, okeydoke7 49)
Western Woodpeckers – 282 (Broken 5/82, Gee Dub 4/41)

ROUND 5

The Phoenix headed south to play in Victoria and try and build on their form and after piling on 5 shy of 400 in the first innings, lead by captain Clay (87) and Wise Guy Sam (66), with The Half Back and okeydoke7 both picking up 50’s. Again it was Easty with the ball with figures of 5/82 that lead the way with Gee Dub (2/80) also pitching in. 44 runs down but not out, the boys didn’t exactly fire on all cylinders. Being dismissed for 261 was not the score they were after. Filthy Sanchez (86) lead the way with okeydokey7 (45) continuing on in his fine form. That was about it with the bat and it didn’t look like the Phoenix would win two in a row. However, you can never count the Phoenix out. Ever. The boys almost pulled off the inevitable but fell just 1 wicket short. Easty seemed to love these conditions picking up another 4/37, including 9 for the match. Gee Dub and Broken both pitching in with 2 wickets a piece.

Northern Phoenix – 395 (Claypigeon 87, Wise Guy Sam 66, The Half Back 58, okeydoke7 50, Speck 36, Eth 34)
Victoria – 439 (Easty 5/82)
Northern Phoenix – 261 (Filthy Sanchez 86, okeydoke7 45, Deddy 39*)
Victoria – 9/218 (Easty 4/37)

ROUND 6

Playing against our Northern rivals Queensland, the boys were looking to defend their home turf and turn their season back onto the right track. Typical Claypigeon lost the toss but luckily Queensland sent us in to bat. That confidence was short lived with the team dismissed for just 256. The Half Back topped scored with 67, Wise Guy Sam and Speck both scored even half centuries. There was an even spread of wicket takers with Broken (3/47), Easty (3/67) and Deddy (3/79) all bowling well. The second inning was a much better one for the Phoenix with the boys piling on 383 runs and taking a 270+ lead. Speck found some form and piled on a season high 137 and joined in a middle order surge that included Wise Guy Sam (67), Deddy (63) and Eth (45). Gee Dub (2/106) was expensive with the ball going at more than 6 per over. Unfortunately it was another loss to the boys, this time going down by just 4 wickets.

Northern Phoenix – 256 (The Half Back 67, Wise Guy Sam 50, Speck 50)
Queensland – 369 (Broken 3/47, Easty 3/67, Deddy 3/79)
Northern Phoenix – 383 (Speck 137, Wise Guy Sam 67, Deddy 63, Eth 45)
Queensland - 6/274

I took 9 for and didn't get full votes? Speck only made a 36?!

#rigged.
take it up with clay, his votes.
mine were different #justsayin'

ROUND 7

Croc Park was an absolute road of a pitch and it always looked like it was going to be a high scoring affair from the outset. Clay got us to bat first again and it was again a very even scoring affair. okeydoke7 (75) and Eth (72) were the star standouts with bat in hand. The Crocs wanted us to stay in the field for as long as possible as the march towards a massive first innings score. 572 runs and a 200 run first inning lead was what followed. All 5 bowlers used were smashed for 100+ runs. Nothing to talk about on that front. Speck again continued form with the bat piling on an unbeaten 102, Filthy Sanchez (90) and okeydoke7 (84) continued to impress. The match was over due to a lack of playing time. The 5 days were up and the Crocs didn’t even get a crack at a second dig. The Phoenix managed to salvage a draw after a fantastic start to the Crocs.

Northern Phoenix – 363 (okeydoke7 75, Eth 72, Wise Guy Sam 62, Filthy Sanchez 51)
Crocodiles – 9dec/572 (Broken 3/108)
Northern Phoenix – 6/507 (Speck 102*, Filthy Sanchez 90, okeydoke7 84, The Half Back 71, Claypigeon 50, Eth 50)
