Incredibly under-rated player and leader amongst media and oppo supporters. I cannot recall seeing a tougher player play football. And I am talking genuine mental and physical toughness. One of only 8 people in history to captain 3 or more flags(most is 4.) One of only two people along with Hodge to achieve that in an 18 team competition.

Hodge and Selwood are revered for their toughness and leadership, but neither of them has anything on Cotchin.

If you could hold your head according to your deeds in football, Trent Cotchin can hold his head as high as anyone.

Incredibly sad to see him finish but the time seems right.

Apart from all his awards etc, has a sneaky highlights package too, which shows he could really play. Very quick thinker on the footy field.

It is really hard to work out who can take what amount of credit for our success, but the most significant people seem to me to be B Gale, B Hartley, P O'Neal, D Hardwick, D Martin, and T Cotchin.

What a magnificent football career.

still got my special edition cotchin captains guernsey from the end of 2012 when he became captain with the chimp signature on it and cotchin 9 on the back

I have followed Cotch's career from the beginning. He was always one of our shining lights in an otherwise bleak era. Even as a kid, he had class. He dived into packs and smoothly navigated the contest. He was composed by foot while never being a monster kick.

Very early on in his career, he was made captain - probably too early. But, the club was looking for a saviour and pinned our hopes on him. For years he was our best midfielder but he was encouraged to accumulate possessions in the back half of the ground, which never hurt the opposition. He was maligned by opposition fans and the media alike as a 'vanilla' player who went missing when it mattered. When we finally made the finals, he was tagged out of the game both times and the haters came for him.

He won the Brownlow by default and again people used that as another way to question his ability rather than applaud his season and why his lack of impact hurt our chances so much. Mitchell was never targeted in the same way when he shared the default Brownlow with Cotch.

Then preseason 2017 happened and he changed everything. I think it will be his greatest legacy is that he became selflessness. It will be how he switched from a ball accumulator to playing to make others better. He became a true leader and inspired others through his attack on the ball and ability to make others better around him. He tagged, created space, tackled and fought, dragging the rest of the team behind him. Our pressure and fight was largely driven by him.

We would not have three flags now but for him. Cotchin will forever be known as a three time premiership captain and Brownlow Medalist but he was even more than that. He was inspirational. He was a true leader and many players owe their success to him. There are are few in the game who can equal those awards or the man he became.

Congratulations Trent on an incredible career - the envy of all, and good luck in the future with your beautiful family. You deserve to be able to put your feet up.

Not only our greatest Captain but he and his wife have an unerring ability to ruffle opposition supporters feathers, 3 flags, a Brownlow and tough as nuts, he will always be a legend at Tigerland and in the AFL.
A very under rated and welcome ability...and most importantly...all done with a smiling face and full head of coiffured hair...love ya work Cotch!

Great post.

The way his 2012 Brownlow is viewed by some is ludicrous when you consider the Coaches votes in that season:

Hard to find enough accolades for this man. Inspiring, resilient, leads by example and the rarest of all skills the ability to lift the players around him so they get the best out of themselves. Culture changer and towering figure of this club. It will be so hard not to see that number 9 running around next season. I'd expect a number of players to take this hard even though it was to be expected. Although people bandy around the term greatest club captain, I have little doubt that in years to come he will be afforded that title. In case he ever reads this: Trent you could not have achieved more and your body of work is beyond impressive, can never thank you enough.

Give this man a statue!
The best captain we've had!

My Hero.
Very confident one day this will happen. 3 time premiership Captain, Brownlow Medalist. Statue and one day Dusty with him. Will be a different Richmond without him.
