I lost love for footy: Gary Ablett
Gary Ablett From: Herald Sun April 01, 2011 12:00am

TOMORROW night I get to enjoy playing footy again. As much as I loved my time at Geelong, I had achieved all I wanted to.another flag was not in the plan?

I'll admit, it was becoming repetitive and I was losing a bit of the enjoyment.at gc i will not be playing football it will be a different task

Enjoyment is the most important thing. If I had stopped enjoying it, then I wouldn't want to play the game any more.really, $10 mil not a motivation

At the Suns there is a fresh challenge.

I did feel early on at Geelong that no matter what I did there, I would still be regarded as Gary Ablett's son. That's fair enough. Dad is an absolute legend down there and deservedly so.In GC you will still be regarded as GA's son, your dad is your dad

That was part of the reason I didn't take the No.5 jumper.

I told the club I didn't want people to think I was drafted because of my name.well you were, so was your brother. Just like your brother was redrafted because of his name

I wanted to prove myself as my own player and that's what I did.

Once I am out on that field, there is nothing from outside that affects me.

What drives me more is when people say I can't do something.

There was a lot of pressure last year with all the contract talk.

It is the same this year with people saying I shouldn't be captain.

That doesn't sting me because you almost need to expect that.

I have no doubt there will be two big challenges this year.

If the team does not go well, the media will question my ability to lead.

And if my form isn't great the question will be whether I am the same player I was without all those great players around me.

In a way, I am looking forward to that.

Without those challenges football would be boring and that's why I love it on the Gold Coast.

And as the people close to me know, I am very competitive.

In the past two weeks I have been the most excited about football for a while and I just want to get into it.

In the past I have never been one to watch much football, but I did watch a lot last week when we had the bye.no logies last week

I could not be more primed for the Suns' first game against Carlton tomorrow night.

This club has been working for this day for a long time, so everyone is excited. Some of the younger guys have been asking advice.

It is great they want to know what it is like when you first get out there.

The biggest challenge will be helping these guys relax early on.

I remember when I made my debut in the opening round of 2002.

With the excitement and the adrenaline, I can recall running off after 10 minutes feeling like I had played a game.

That's because the nerves can really sap the energy, so it is important we help them relax as quickly as possible.

And nerves affecting your performance can even happen when you are not an inexperienced first-year player.

I can't wait to lead the team out, toss the coin and then run to the huddle. I won't say too much except remind them to play their role.

We don't need any individuals out there.as you were always the team player, you didnt care about individual awards

If we play well together, that will help us win the game.

A first up win would be the stuff of the dreams and we'll be pushing hard for it.

And I'm going to have fun doing it.

What a fluffer

I really hate articles written in one sentence bullets.

They have no flow.

And are irritating to read.

Can newspaper journalists not structure a paragraph anymore?

Oh, I forgot, Gary Ablett is not a journalist.

He is a Queensland based footy player.

So why is he writing an article for a Melbourne newspaper?

I really don't care.

Let's concentrate on the players that have stayed.

And the season ahead.

Go Cats.
