Cameron Ling beats Simon Black in the pole vault awesome
My dad was saying he had a chance to win gold earlier in the night I said he had no chance after all after seeing him qualify. Ecstatic to be completly wrong:thumbsu: Top Stuff Mr Hooker

Wow, just wow.

Came from absolutely nowhere! Incredible!

What a champ! :)

No he hasn't. He has been ranked in the top 5 since 2005. He was one of three favourites in Osaka last year. He completely stuffed up and I bagged him on the world champs thread and said he had to toughen up like McLellan and Wroe and a couple of the other kids who did their PB's at Osaka.

He was so pissed off with his efforts he said he wasn't cutting his hair until after Beijing as he went in to Osaka with short hair. Well done, just like McLellan and the relay stuff up he said it wasn't good enough and went away and improved.:thumbsu::thumbsu:

He has been at the WAIS with Parnov's squad. Dimitri Markov came to Oz from Russia in 1997 because of Parnov and in 2001 won the World Champs with a 6.05m. Hooker and Paul Burgess also from that WAIS squad have swapped number 1 and 2 world rankings several times since 2005 along with a couple of USA guys and a couple of Russians.

We might finally be seeing the rebirth of Athletics in Oz after Athletics Australia developed a 5 year strategy in 2005 and decided to invest in kids.

It needs a shit load more money, not from the government, but from fans and corporates to develop and grow further.

And go Jarrod Bannister tomorrow night, rip that 89m javelin throw you did at nationals at the end of February and we will have another gold. Book mark it!

Don't give me a lecture, I know he's good. Ranked 6th in the world, cleared 6m before, but this was unexpected.

No it wasn't. He has jumped 6.0m in each of the last 3 years. He was one of only 3 vaulters to jump 6.0m this year. Track and Field News, the bible of the sport ranked him no.3 going into the Olympics and gave him a good chance to win.

He was expected to do well and he was highly ranked. He didn't come from nowhere as you said. He may have come from nowhere to the average punter.

I was really hoping for Gold here. I wasn't overly pleased with our Olympic campaign thus far but finally someone showed some spirit when the chips were down and got themselves over the line. (from 5.65 in the qualifying to the final jump)

Being in WA you get a fair bit more pole vaulting news in the papers. Certainly didn't come from nowhere, but did it the hard way :thumbsu:

You legend :)

Oh and go Bannister!!

before the event he was one 3 favourites, 1 bombed out in qualifying.... was hardly unexpected. he and the russian had near identical seasons bests.

As someone that doesn't know much of the laws etc. of Pole Vault, I assume his coach jumping over the fence mid-event was an ok thing to do?

Just when you have relay swimmers jumping into a pool to get disqualified, gymnasts running before a green light doing likewise, and a big no-no for tennis players to receive any coaching mid-match I found it odd at first that he could talk to his coach, but obviously that seems to be ok as they both did it. Though the fact that there weren't any hesitations amongst the commentators/security when his coach came on after the gold medal jump surprised me even more.

He just won gold. Do you reckon there would be rules stopping Usain Bolt from talking to his coach on the track just after he won??

What's the problem? he can go right upto the fence and talk to his coach during the comp.

interesting point but i doubt it.

athletes talk to their coaches all the time in field events.

if the coach coming onto the track did anything, i think it would just rule further jumps ineligible which would mean he was still the champion. just not olympic record holder....

but i don't think there is any problem anyway

HOOKER YOU LEGEND!"!

Russian should protest after Hooker asked his coach whether he should move up to the bigger pole for his final attempt at 5.90

:p

Well I don't recall Usain's coach... or anyone's coach etc. jumping from the stands to celebrate in/after any of the events so far.

Obviously I'm not wanting him to be dq'd or anything, but I just thought it was odd that when most events have tight rules around such things, no one seemed to care. Keep in mind it was still mid-event as he had another couple of jumps.

Has the long jump been cancelled? It's one of the marque events of track and field and ch7 have not shown a single second of either the mens or womens. f***ing pathetic.

Oh and there was a marvellous decathlon that came to an end tonight that we saw sweet FA on 7. After the javelin the 9th event, Bryan Clay of the USA had the gold stiched up but there was nothing in it for the minor medals.

2 Andrei Krauchanka BLR 7790 Pts
3 Aleksandr Pogorelov RUS 7777 Pts
4 Leonel Suárez CUB 7777 Pts
5 Roman Šebrle CZE 7620 Pts.

The decathlon always ends with a 1,500m which can be very cruel after 9 events. So 13 pts seperated 3 guys for 2 medals. That was about 2 seconds over 1,500m.

Heat 222 August 2008 - 21:49
Position Bib Athlete Country Mark . Points

10 Roman Šebrle CZE 4:49.63 . 621

12 Aleksandr Pogorelov RUS 5:01.56 . 551

Never sat next to the Pole Vault coaches pen at Perry Lakes then I suppose? :p

About bloody time we medalled in the Olympics from our men.

Since the days of Steve Rippon, and Jimmy Miller who would have gone a lot further had he not developed chronic back injuries, we have had a fantastic batch of vaulters - and a good relationship with the gymnastics setup that is so important for vaulters. This group were instrumental in getting the women into the games as well.

But Burgess has to think about retiring, because he just can't perform in the most important meets. There's no point.

But look out for the Brits in the vault over the next four years as Rippon is the GB vault coach, and is a very very good coach.

Hooker produced a series of clutch vaults.

5.60 clear

5.70 pass, Lukyanenko and Yurchenko bot got it with their first and pass on 5.75.

5.80 miss, miss, clear Lukyanenko clears with first vault

5.85, miss, miss, clear Lukyanenko was the same

5.90 miss, miss, clear Lukyanenko missed all three Gold to Hooker

5.96 miss, miss, clear gets Olympic record.

Great clutch vaulting by Hooker, 5 clearances and 8 misses to get a gold + Olympic record.
