Doesn't rotate. We always play Hawthorn Easter Monday and Essendon in that crap country round.

We don't play home games at Marvel anymore.
Who is "home" in those games rotates is the point. The point being Geelong has locked in a couple of MCG "BLOCKBUSTERS" each year...their equivalent of QBday or Dreamtime.

In 2024, Geelong was "home" in Country Game and "away" in Easter Monday

In 2023, Geelong was "away" in Country Game and "home" in Easter Monday.

They have worked it perfectly, they get similar level of MCG exposure as Essendon, but then also get 9 games at Cat Park where they have a massive leg-up.

Interestingly we've played better at the G this year than KP.

Why can't we spend more money than you if we have it?
That was the finding of the ooga booga AFL investigation of 2006-07.

It was becoming an arms race, and there was a clear correlation between how much clubs were spending and wins.

Nobody wants the same clubs winning every year just because they can throw more money at their team.

Team has leg up when hosting interstate teams and sides from out of town

Huge if true

And I don't want the league to boast about we are only here to make money which is why we screw half our clubs.

There is nothing that is equal in this league other than the salary cap. Maybe as it is so stuffed up they can remove the soft cap and let that be open.

You can't have on one hand it be like we can't have an arms race as thats not fair then advocate that the league can do it as long as it benefits certain clubs.

Is that an issue given you probably get 15 games at the G?

Since you changed your game style in 2022 you have. Prior to then you struggled big time in finals at the G.
Everyone struggled against those dynasty Hawthorn and Richmond sides at the G - dominant forces there when they were up and about.

Otherwise Geelong's finals record at the G was 7-5 from 2011-2019 (covid followed that). Which probably isn't that unexpected when you are playing very good teams away from your actual primary home ground.

Quite simply a lie or he is just shit at maths.
There was a tune there when it was true.
It's why the hawks began playing in tassie, as we needed 35k to break even at the time at the g and 40k at docklands, but were continually drawing teams who struggled to draw 30k vs anyone

Since just before covid though, the terms have changed and it's about 15k break even

If we got 70k to every game we wouldnt be in Tassie.

Bigger crowds are more money. Especially given away team tickets are capped at the Cattery and effectively uncapped at the MCG.

They would correctly argue that current model and league distributions gaurantee the survival of all clubs.

Open it up and GC, GWS, BL, Port, StK, Melb, NM, WB would not be able to compete.

Most of the important stuff that links to wins each season - players, coaching and football department spend - is equalised.

Whether your game is on a Sunday or Friday, and if you have 10 games outside of your city or 7 is pretty irrelevant.

You can't have on one hand it be like we can't have an arms race as thats not fair then advocate that the league can do it as long as it benefits certain clubs.
Apart from one city teams in football heartland like WC and Adel, the only way to grow a team is sustained generational on-field success.

But again, which clubs do people think currently benefit from the commercial focus?

Carlton and Essendon get the favourable "commercial" fixtures, but not sure how this helps them on-field?

In the 21st century it is Sydney who have played in 20 of 24 finals series, and the moat GFs.

Is it any surprise when the AFL is trying to grow the game in Sydney?

What Cook said a few years back (so not sure how much this may have changed) was that at Geelong when you have a capacity of 25,000, the Club "make a net profit in that game of $638,000 per game, which is $26 per head. If we have a crowd of 85,500 at the MCG, which we did have against Collingwood in 2007, we brought home $771,000, which was $9 a head."

The reason why games at GMHBA are so lucrative is because in addition to gate takings the Club takes the revenue from food, drink, merchandise etc as well as all the corporate hospitality cash, cash for parking etc. My understanding is that Clubs get nothing out of the MCC members on match day, so you can discount any crowd by the number of people in the MCC Members.

The AFL have been trying to grow the game in NSW for 40 years. We just had a final in GWS and they could not fill the place up.
Sometimes you need to know your limits. NSW will always be a rugby heartland just as Victoria will always be a footy heartland. stop wasting money pushing it uphill.

Bigger crowds are not more money. What does it cost to go to the MCG. $30 ?
Or what would be the average spend for a 70K crowd at the G. Would it be $50

optus in Perth it costs 60$ and upwards to get in. If there is any cheap seats for walk ups they might be $30? But there is not many of them.

Bigger crowds deliver bigger crowds, maybe a nicer look. They don't necessarily deliver more income.

After 40 years, and 25 years of success, the Swans are pretty established now. They have 70k members and sell out the SCG most weeks.

GWS just 10 years in, they need another 20 to establish themselves at that level.

Aiming for 150k members for the two Sydney teams is very realistic.

There was never ever any need for two sydney sides or two brisbane sides. They are Rugby states and they only needed one side.

The AFL should also of not allowed these low draft picks to just up and leave after 3-5 years. Van you imagine if those players had of stayed at Gold coast and GWS. Maybe a couple flags each by now and the AFL would be 10 years ahead of the curve.

I think Geelong was on par with Richmond those years. Stuffed up 2019.
