What's with all this nonsense about picking young players for their first game and then dropping them one week later?

The pressure on a guy coming in for his first game must be huge and whilst not perfect, Joey and Morts played well. Some of you do realise that they both had more touches than Luke Hodge averaged in his first three years of AFL footy don't you?

Why would you pick these guys and not give them a second chance, with less pressure? They'll go into their second game with a better idea of the speed of AFL, less pressure than their first game and be able to build on the instruction they receive during the week. We'll then really see what they're like.

If we had 5 stars coming back in then sure, but otherwise, crazy talk !!

totaly agree, i realy do hope josh is picked again i liked his game.

i think morts deserves another shot too we need to build these kids confidance for the future coz we need our depth players on stand by and ready to go..

but unfortunately at this time of our season and playing for a spot in the GF we need our best 22 and if it means puting hodge in and taking out josh or morts then i think thats what has to be done.........

No, but Crawford and Lewis will be enough at this stage.

What this last month has shown is the need for depth. Who is to say that we are not going to be in a similar situation in September. I would love to see K3 and Morto get two or three games under the belt.

I dont believe Lewis and Crawf are anywhere near 100%. So I dont think either of the newbies will be dropped.

Disagree, this is the right time of the season to leave the newbies in.

It will build some confidence and give the more experienced players the time they need to fully recover fromany injury and therefore ensuring they are fully fit heading into September.

By allowing the young ones to play will also enable the club to build greater depth.

It would also rest a few older players to stop the hammy and soft tissue injuries !!

I didn't think either of them did that well. Their skills were pretty poor. Playing one game and then dropping them back to the VFL gives them a taste for the big time and so they'll know what they need to work on to get another game.

That said, I think you're jumping the gun a bit by assuming they've been dropped already!

Yeah sides have not been picked yet.Hopefully they get another crack. It doesn't matter how many possesions you get,it's what you do with them.

In: Crawford, Lewis
Out: Dew (inj.), Clarke (omit.)

Kennedy, Morton remain

Don't drop Clarke. We need him to tag Cooney this week. I'm sick of Brad Sewell's tagging which is 100% non-existant. He just goes head-to-head with the oppositions best midfielder and lets him get 25+ possesions but beats him by getting 30 of his own. It would be much better if we could just shut down their best midfielder and dry up their movement

Was actually surprised they didn't get Clarke to run with Bate or McLean on Sunday, instead they dumped him into the forward line where he was pretty ineffective save for 1 goal that resulted from what looked like a shanked kick

I agree with the above! Clarke looks slow at the minute. Kennedy, whilst his disposal at times was ordinary, deserves another crack! Morton looked good and followed on from his good pre-season form in the big time. Dew will miss apparently.

Crawf is no certainty to come in according to the HUN.

Brad Sewell can be negative when he wants to. If you remember last years game against the Dogs, he played on Cooney who got 3 kicks and 10 possessions. Sewell tagged him so hard he actually found out who he was voting for in the federal election and voted the exact opposite, just so Cooney wouldn't have an impact.

IMO, the best taggers in the comp over the past couple of years have been Ling and K. Cornes. Why? Because they both shut down their opponent and hurt them the other way. With Hodge and Lewis missing in the middle, Sewell has had to be the bread(ball)winner over the past couple of weeks. But make no mistake, if Mitchell and Lewis can win the ball, Sewell can play more negative than HFC082 in a gameday thread.

Because Kennedy & Morton came in for injured players, not because they're in the best 22.

We're past the forced development stage.

Best 22 every week and go for home.

Injuries will be a part of the season and the juniors will get games if they deserve to.

Yes but if we stick to the same 22 week in week out we will end up like St kilda and have a team of overaged, over-rated boring sof footballers! Development of our list is important and if it means blooding a new player here and then, then it is worthwhile, it also creates pressure on the guys in the top 22 to perform each week otherwise they now that there is a youngster that has first grade experience ready to take his place.

Kennedy and Morton
Positives - they could find the pill, strong over the ball, courageous
Negatives - panicked under pressure and turned it over, both not quick

The Dees applied a lot of pressure and it was only their first game so you can make excuses for them turning it over. The only way they are going to improve in this area is to keep playing them, and at nine and o this is a perfect opportunity. Tuck surprised when he was given more opportunity hopefully these boys can do the same, it will give us great depth if they can develop the way Tuck has.

I don't think anybody doubts that it would be nice to give the kids an extended run in the first team, as we all like seeing young players get games and develop (re: cyril rioli). However for this match against the 3rd placed team which, if we win, means we will go 10-0 and be basically assured of a top two finish, I think if players such as hodge and lewis and crawf are ready to come back in you have to play them at the youngsters expense.

That being said I think they did play good first games, both getting over 15 possessions each in a tight game. A lot of people mention their clangers but don't mention the fact that players like mitchell and sewell and basically everybody else (except perhaps bateman and birchall) made some clangers in that match too! Essentially I would like to see how they go in a more comfortable, open game (like the ones we had against melbourne the first time, fremantle, adelaide and collingwood) where they can be eased in to the action rather than thrown in the deep end.

Trickstar, you're the man !!!

In addition, how will we ever find out if these youngsters are actually better than what's in the team?

Its called picking from your second tier. This was a forced strategy on account of injuries and suspensions not because Clarko and company wanted to turn the list over or identify the exact depth at the club. Joey and Morts will play again should some of the regulars not get up. I also think there are some others ahead of this bunch like Tuck and Stokes but they too are injured. Having said all that, it all bodes well for your confidence and team spirit if you win games with lesser lights.

You beat your opponent by playing better footy not by sitting on his head. I much rather see the hawks create and win then see them play the retrogade shite of a few seasons ago.
