Matho can perform a role when injuries require it, CEY can’t.

I think that's too definitive. CEY has played some quality football at senior level. He hasn't shown that since coming to the club and I am not at all a fan of his work to date up here but the way you've described that is way too binary IMO.

Edit: FWIW, while I've enjoyed Matho's work, he still trails the footy a lot when it is in transition. He's not slower than someone like Lyons but Lyons runs all day where as Matho, as hard as he tries, gets gassed.

Jason mp can you update the list.
Not sure if this list below is 100 % correct but Zorko has been changed to 2022
I believe our rookies are
Cat A - Birchall, Mathieson, Ballenden, & A Smith
Cat B - Madden & Uosis

This is out of date as it doesn't take into account the rule change that anyone who has been delisted previously is automatically an unrestricted free agent. Similarly if you have been at multiple clubs but have the relevant number of years of service, you are also a FA. So JL (if there isn't a contract trigger activiated) and Archie are unrestricted free agents.

I don’t believe he’s been the same player he was at Adelaide since his injury. Certainly looked like he wasn’t up to it in his last season there.
Edit: FWIW, while I've enjoyed Matho's work, he still trails the footy a lot when it is in transition. He's not slower than someone like Lyons but Lyons runs all day where as Matho, as hard as he tries, gets gassed.

For this discussion we just need to remove the players who have re-signed from the list in the OP. We don’t need to know every players contract status.

Just got it from a site i use
Is there a site that is up to date?
BigFooty always is.

This is out of date
At a minimum it's also missing Rich re-signing.
as it doesn't take into account the rule change that anyone who has been delisted previously is automatically an unrestricted free agent. Similarly if you have been at multiple clubs but have the relevant number of years of service, you are also a FA.

The second part isn't exactly correct. If you've done the relevant number of years of service at a single club and have then changed clubs, you are also a FA when coming out of contract at the new club. If you've done the relevant number of years of service across multiple clubs due to trades, you will not be a FA.

So JL (if there isn't a contract trigger activiated) and Archie are unrestricted free agents.

Lyons is a FA because he got delisted by the Suns, as is Robbo (delisted by the Blues)

Mathieson, Smith, and Ballenden are all FAs because they were delisted by us before being re-rookie (though Archie would reach it anyway I think).

Birchall is a FA because he reached that status at the Hawks (though he would also be one because we delisted him and re-rookied him last year).

CEY interesting one. Is it he not got the body right as always seems something injury wise.
Or from watching Crows games I thought he was a lot better.
Or game change
Maybe all 3

He still has time to perform consistently at the club and force his way into the Best 22 given the amount of injuries clubs can have these days, but I really can't see him earning another contract with us past 2022 if he is still in the position as he is now IMO.

Maybe someone like Gold Coast or North Melbourne could pick him up as a DFA in the future for a big-bodied midfielder at their club for age experience to a young club but nothing else really stands out by him as a player at our club tbh.

Why would Gold Coast or North pick him up?

If he can’t crack our best 22 or be that first or second reserve in, it’s because he’s no longer physically up to it. That won’t change if he’s playing at a club with a shallower midfield.

Jason mp can you update the list.
I just updated the list in the OP and pasted it below > Thanks to dlanod in the roster watch board.

2021:
Grant Birchall (R)
Lincoln McCarthy
Jarryd Lyons (or 2022, with trigger in 2021?)

Thomas Joyce
James Madden (R)
Mitch Robinson
Brock Smith
Keidean Coleman
Carter Michael

With Jimmy Madden, can he be upgraded from Cat B status to Cat A?
Or does he need to go straight onto the senior list when upgraded?

In my opinion not yet. His game on Friday night was his best thus far but for him to be in our best 22 we need more from him. He seems to struggle keeping up with the pace of the game this year. Unlike most supporters, I dis-like the way he carries on with the "look at me" behaviour. Right now he has a great opportunity to cement a place in the best 22 while Neale is out. So far the thing he is most acknowledged for is his carry on & I believe he should put all that aside & just contribute more. I sincerely hope he succeeds but he isnt there yet.
I understand what you are saying but by the same token I love his spirit and energy and wouldn't like to see his personality neutered to make him vanilla. I like the way he gets under the skin of opposition players (and supporters)...as long as he plays his role.

Getting under supporters skin is not relevant when it comes to winning or losing games. Getting under players skin is good in the right circumstance. If you saw his carry on after he kicked that goal from outside 50, Zorko went up to him and told him to move on which he refused to have any of it. To me that was poor form from Matheson. Its a team game, not for individuals own promotion.
I would much prefer he use that spirit & energy to get around the ground more like a midfielder should and play his role.

Okay point taken. I was really impressed with both Zorko and Joe getting in there and getting him focused.

I still think defensive running a problem with Matho. Sometimes it looks on TV he just jogging when the play going the other way.
Lyons is not super fast as well although he runs defensively faster and covers holes better.
Not written Matho off. Although once Neale and Berry back.. Who is he kicking out for a spot.
Long term M Robbo

Not overly big on the over the top crap myself. Can work against you.

Mitch does do a lot of running these days in thst wing spot. I dont think matho could do that work qt the moment

Not sure on that Dalions, I think briztoon or dlanod would be the ones to ask, they're both very knowledgeable in that area.
Pretty sure you have to be taken in the rookie draft to be Cat A, which means having to get through the National Draft as well.

These days, with the changed restrictions and salary cap concessions, it's easier to promote the promising player to the senior list, and move a delisting candidate to Cat A instead.

Ben Keays anyone?

Ben Keays anyone?
Didn’t I specifically say CEY is different to Keays in my previous post?

Edit:no I didn’t. I should have, to highlight the difference.

CEY is no longer physically capable of playing the role that’s asked of him.

Athletic or physical attributes were never what held Keays back. It was always his skills for the role he was suited for.

Giving him an extended run in his best position, his athletic attributes are able to overcome his skill issues, which have improved steadily playing at the top level.

Which is pretty standard. I used to have a coach who continually said the only way to improve, after a certain point, is to play against better players at a higher level, otherwise you’re unlikely to reach that level yourself.

You say that so definitively yet plenty at the club would laugh at that statement. Important not to paint opinion as fact.
