List Mgmt. OOC 2022- Who is playing for their careers in 2022?

Surely Lester becomes a VFL player if he gets cut from the AFL list. I can't look at the ressies without Lester being there.

Said this before about Dev, but you'd think the coaches have said Lyons' spot is his within the next two years, as Lyons is about 30 atm.
It's whether Dev wants more AFL time now, or whether he wants to wait his time, continue working hard and get a spot in the best 22 for premiership side/contender. I think he is more likely to re-sign then not, but it wouldn't hurt to give him a couple of games (without being the medi-sub).

We will probably be seeing a lot of last minute signings this year once the season is over depending on who we want via trade or draft.
If we only draft, can see Ely, Uosis and McFadyen being cut. Keep Lester for depth and could keep Robbo for the same reason. Robbo's situation completely depends on if he wants to retire (he's mentioned not being on the list next year multiple times as a pass off comment on Instagram content from what I've seen).

I could Lester getting another contract unless we draft another key/3rd tall defender. Payne and Lester are solid backups for Andrews, Adams and Gardiner
Little chance of us getting a highly rated one this year since we'll be using our picks to match Ashcroft and Fletcher. And if we draft one in 2023, they'll need a couple of years at least to get their body right. So I think Lester has another three years on the list if he's happy to be a backup. That'll keep him around until he's 33.

IF Gardiner resigns (which a poster has already mentioned), and I think he will, Payne should seek a trade (or traded by Lions, as he wont be best 22 next year), might free up a little bit of salary to offer McStay. I don't think McStay is worth anywhere near 600K a year in his current role at the Lions, but if he leaves for Melbourne and wants the challenge and pressure of being #1 forward, then I think Lester and Fullarton get another contract, likely one year.

There is a bit of chat on West Coast boards regarding Dev, and a few Melbourne clubs regarding Payne. Would not like to lose either of them, nor Tom Berry. Also think Fullarton just needs a bit more time and hopefully dominates in VFL this year and next.

If we get rid of Payne who is our only non ruck tall we down to Lester.
Or our ruck forwards in Fort, Lane, H Smith and Fullarton to replace our Key backs and forward.
As you can see now we went Payne to replace Joe/Dan.

Not sure how close we get to $ for Dan anyway.

I only really see 6 names on there that would club would really want to keep.

Darcy Gardiner (on this weeks form still a valuable asset)
Dan McStay (contract offer but likely gone)
Jaxon Prior (just starting to really come on and I see him as too 23 player)
Dayne Zorko (completely up to him, if we win it all this year he may retire)
Carter Michael (next Daniel Rich)
Tom Fullarton (deserves another year or 2, May get more games next year if McStay moves on)

??? Lester (depth) Tom Berry and Blake Coleman

I can see us keeping Coleman also… he has had a rough run so far off the field. Give him a chance to get a full pre season in. Would also love to keep Terry as depth. Give him a year to work in his disposal.

Fullarton as a third tall in defense would be good. We should change his role in 2s to be permanently this one.

I hope we hang on to Prior somehow. We'll regret letting him go, I hope he stays.

Carter Michael to main list, TBerry and Blake Coleman as rookies if they choose to stay. Robbo will retire and Zorko you never know.

Even if we lose McStay you'd play Fullarton down back?

Yep, we are slim on tall backs now. After Payne there is no one. We have Fort and BigO who can ruck and play forward. I think Henry Smith has been playing forward and Lane is coming along from ruck perspective.

We better invest Fullarton as a defensive tall, giving Henry Smith the opportunity to play forward if the need arises in the near future.

Blake Coleman has been showing improvement in the 2s. I don't understand why we'd get rid of him, or even send him to the rookie list.

He's unknown for the rest of the comp, so we might as well retain him in the cheapest possible way. Frees up a spot in the main list so we could add another player hopefully.

Agree, he is a high upside investment IMO, needs to have a huge off season and work on his endurance which is what would hold him back from being an AFL level small forward.

Keep McStay, Zorko & Gardiner if they are not asking for silly amounts of money and contract length. So McStay may leave

Resign Prior, Michael, Fullarton
Possibly resign Blake Coleman depending how the club and Coleman think he wants an AFL career
Kiddy mentioned recently that Blake was starting to get back his love of AFL so that is good

We need to reinvigorate our list so not all that keen to keep any of the other players
Obviously if the club see something in some of these players they will be resigned

I am not all that keen to retain players for VFL depth. Maybe 1 leader type that still has a possible AFL career

Would rather swap out a few and bring in some new players from other clubs and/or the draft

End result at the end of the draft and trade period >

Outs- Dan McStay, Mitch Robinson(Retired), Ely Smith, Connor McFadyen. + Cat B Deividas Uosis, I think they will give Mitchell Cox a full pre season and 2023 to show us what he's got.

Ins- Will Ashcroft, Jaspa Fletcher, Griffin Logue, Jacob Hopper. + Cat B Darryl White Jnr.

Easy-Peasy job done.:D

Our only reserve key forward goes down back to be a reserve key back in addition to Paybe?

I think Henry Smith is at very long odds to be a key forward at AFL level and even so is probably 4-6 years off

We have options in forward line if let's say both Fort and Big O are unavailable. we could go small with Rayner, Bailey and push another midfielder to play forward.

Defensive tall cover is more important in my opinion - we tried Fullarton in defense recently and he looked ok with field kicking etc. I think we need to give him a consistent go at that spot and let him make it his own. Let's say Gardiner doesn't re-sign after 2022 then we don't have any tall backs in reserves at all.

If we lose McStay we would probably want to bring another tall. If we lost both him and Dizzy then we definitely would.

I'd look at rookie listing Arnold from the reserves before switching Fullarton to be a permanent key back

Also I've given up on the coaches considering going with a smaller forward set up

Blake Coleman has been showing improvement in the 2s. I don't understand why we'd get rid of him, or even send him to the rookie list.
There has been a bit of talk about him possibly losing his love for the game but I agree if he wants to continue he should stay on the list as a rookie to free up a spot on the Senior list.

my concern with Tom down back is he potentially is more an intercepting back then a lock down type, so Harris already performs that role. I thought he might be offered the 3rd tall forward linking type role McStay performs. Does seem to lack a bit of pace but appears to have stamina to get up and down the ground.

Yep he got out bodied rather easily a few times in his outing down back, needs more time in the gym and to work on his positioning.

What I think the club will end up doing >

Darcy Gardiner - 3 year extension.
Thomas Berry - Delisted.
Daniel McStay - Magpies FA.
Ely Smith - Delisted.
Jaxon Prior - 2 year extension.
Ryan Lester - 1 year extension.
Deividas Uosis (R) - Delisted.

Only one I'd push back on is giving Berry the 1 year rather than Cox. Berry is still only 22 and was starting to get his chance to shine in the middle before he went down with injury. I don't mind what Mitch Cox was doing but didn't really see anything too special or any real point of difference to what Berry can do as well.

They were the 2 I was tossing up as well, just thought they might go with Cox because he has only had half a season on the list. I did think it was a bit of a surprise when we recruited him in the mid season draft, thought a depth KPD would have been a better option.
