Meh, I mostly blame Phil Collins for the annoying "gated drum" technique that irritated me all through the 1980s.

There was a point where EVERYTHING outside of punk or metal bands sounded like it was generated by a drum machine, I couldn't figure out what was wrong until years later. That's when I discovered "gated reverb."
Much prefer natural drum sound.
