I know a lot about sports betting and in particular corruption in sports betting. I made a living betting on sports here and in the UK for 20 years.

If anybody thinks there are people in the know who clean up the bookies by placing bets on the Brownlow winner or top 5 finishes etc they don't understand how small these markets are and how sensitive the bookmakers are to substantial bets. I mean if you tried to have $1m on Patrick Cripps to win the Brownlow at his odds you wouldn't even get $50k of that on without major ructions in the markets. If you and very few others knew in advance he was going to get favourable voting across the year and could bet on him week by week using different account identities across multiple bookies, you might be able to hide a 6 figure stake that way. But if Cripps does an ACL in rd 12 you have been wiped out. Co-ordinating this would involve a cartel of umpires being involved at the very least. So it is unlikely.

Where you could profit heavily and it could be hidden is if you were a bookmaker in the know. If the volume of money being bet on players would normally see Cripps offered at $3.50 and Daicos at $2.00 then you offer both at $2.20 and collect a lot more on Daicos(and other players) than you lose on Cripps. But this also requires quite a few different conspirators. I know people who work and have worked for leading bookmakers eg Sportsbet, where they are responsible for setting odds, accepting and rejecting bets etc. Not one of them has ever told me they were ever instructed to set wrong odds in this way, nor that they have ever seen any evidence of this happening. In any event, a bookmaker doing this that was radically different in price to the rest of the market would stand out like dog's bollocks.

These guys running all this stuff are playing a much bigger and safer game than corrupt betting activity. The media, the AFL and the betting companies are all feeding each other in a huge legal gravy train where nobody can get put in jail for being deceptive lying campaigners only interested in enriching themselves.

Cricket betting, well that is a very different matter. Because most televised matches will have US$1b+ bet on them in and through the illegal Indian markets. So there is a lot more scope to corrupt people and a lot more resources available to ensure it is kept quiet.
It's a long time ago now (1996) but when I lived in WA, Jeremy Wasley won the Sandover in a boilover and the bookies got taken to the cleaners. Late bets just before the count was held.

They had a big cry about it and said they'd never allow betting on the Sandover again.

Someone had seen the votes.

Exactly. The c-suite execs running these shows are on multi-million dollar deals. Why would they piss their freedom, lives, families, houses, etc. away when they already live lives of wealth and privilege?

100 years since Essendon lost to win the flag. Friday 27th September will be the 100 year Anniversary of Essendon's 1924 Premiership which was won by them losing the last game of the finals, the only team to ever win a flag by losing.
The 1924 season used a new finals system which for obvious reasons was never to be repeated with the top four teams after the Home and Away rounds playing a round robin finals series. The team which finished on top of the Home and Away ladder also had the possibility of playing the top team after the final series in a grand final challenge unless it was them in which case they would automatically be presented the flag.
After two rounds Essendon were undefeated and thus a loss would give them the potential of still finishing first or having the challenge grand final. Labelled by the media a ridiculous situation and in a rather lacklustre display Essendon lost to Richmond by 20pts but claimed the flag with the superior percentage.
Following the game in the dressing rooms and later at Carlyon’s Hotel, players blamed each other for the loss and fisticuffs broke out. This was later reported as the “blackest time in Essendon’s history”.
Star centre half back and dual Premiership player Tom Fitzmaurice was so upset he refused to play with the club again transferring to Geelong who would go on to win the 1925 flag.
Please join us in recognising the 100 years anniversary of the Essendon 1924 Premiers as the only team to lose the last final of the year but win the flag and celebrate by having a punch up.
