And what a farce the game/rules are when a 50m penalty is paid because the player the UMPIRE nominated moved off the mark instead of the other player.
A game that has always had grey rules of what is a free, now has technical rules that can basically award a team a goal from the middle of the field because a player doesn't hear an umpire or takes a couple of steps backwards or to the side (not actually over the mark) before correcting themselves.

It has jack s**t to do with all that. It's all fluff. We didn't win our flags because Richo & Deledio - we won them because of Cotchin, Jack, Martin & Rance. THEY were the best leaders we had. They didn't "learn" it from anyone. They "earned it" by playing like leaders.

FFS did the Bulls win their championships because of the old guys they had on the list when they drafted Michael Jordan? Or was it Michael Jordan being ******* brilliant & the club be smart about getting the right pieces around him ie Pippen, Rodman, Horace Grant, Harper etc.


Did the Patriots win all thier Superbowls because of Brady? or the old guys they had on their list when they drafted Brady.

It's brilliant players who win you s**t - not old has-beens teaching them. No one taught Dusty to be Dusty. Get real.

People get way too romantic about "the old guard". Sure, they can help in lots of ways. But nothing helps more than tremendous, elite talent. Hawks have none of that for all the reasons stated above

North have about 10 x elite draft picks in their team and remain crud. Gold Coast have had a gazillion top draft picks in their 15-years and have never made finals. GWS have had the same and have made 1 x GF and never won a thing. Lions have traded in a dual Brownlow medallist, have had numerous top-3 picks, have father son gifts and haven’t won jack and are 2-5. Dogs have had loads of top draft picks, academy charity and father son gifts and where are they at?

There’s no ‘silver bullet’ to being a successful club or building a successful list for a flag. It’s about coaching, development and culture as much as it’s about elite young talent.

I can’t believe you’re so hellbent on top-3 draft picks when history tells you they guarantee you diddly squat.

It was even more stupid than that, if the boundary umpire didn't how it in far enough for the rucks to get to, it had to hit the ground before any other player could touch it.
Honestly a 10 year old could have thought that rule out better than the AFL did and how long did they have to come up with it, a whole off season, if not longer.
Was it 2 or 3 seasons we had to watch that crap.

Richmond’s list manager (Hartley) has a close relationship with the new Eagles list manager (Clarke) …. as if the Eagles will refuse to trade and force Baker through to the PSD … it completely destroys the relationship between the clubs, so next time the Eagles are looking to ‘trade’ with Richmond they’ll get nowhere.

So it might provide a one-off sugar hit getting Baker for ‘free’, but the Eagles need multiple years of building their list and this relies on fostering great relationships with all clubs, players and player managers.

The human aspect is often overlooked in trading. Over the last few years we've let players go in their best interest, and facilitated very simple trades with other clubs, fostering that relationship. That means we're a better chance of receiving similar treatment back (Gold Coast for example).

The opposite end of this is Essendon, who are a major pain in the arse to trade with. And likewise with Carlton. They completely shafted us with the Yarran trade, and we haven't sniffed at any of their players since and won't deal with that club.

All the list managers would know each other personally. Far better to do a deal with a friend than an enemy who you can't trust.
