So, at the start of the trade period the AFL make a big song and dance about salary dumps being a new part of trade period. Get used to it. That's what we're doing now to make sure clubs don't get into salary cap space trouble. Then, the Sun's amaze everyone by offering their Academy kid, who's whole family moved down to the GC to support the fella, who's bought a house there and expects to play out his career there having gone through the academy since he was 13 and had his deal, wait for it, back ended, offered up INCLUDING pick 7 ! Wow.

Ok, everyone takes a deep breath and says fair enough, game on...that is until the Cats step in and say yep, we will smooth his salary out over four years (including a tiny top up for looks) and take the juicy Pic 7 on offer and the rest of the comp goes nuts and complains the the AFL. How can the current premiers be gifted such a prize for a kid that is so far from best 22 it's not funny ? (The fact that the AFLPA player rep Danger helped construct this deal behind the scenes - maybe even helped plant the seed for the concept and was then ROARINGLY quiet about the deal when the player revealed how devastated he was to be dumped by his club, I wonder why ! is mind boggling).

Cue the AFL take backwards steps (giant big ones) only a week and a half after their first statement that salary dumps are the new go and issue ANOTHER statement saying that they are reviewing their impramatur on this new form of trading and it's unlikely to be allowed in the future ! Everyone rolls their eyes !

WTAF ! Talk about shutting the gate after the horse has bolted. What a ******* Mickey Mouse organisation. At least Steamboat Willie could steer his riverboat down the middle of the river without crashing it onto rocks just after take off.

Good luck to Geelong. Pathetic effort by the league, yet again.

Goodbye Gil and good riddance. Apart from fast tracking AFLW your time at the head of the league has been a litany of disasters, AFLX (puke), ridiculous untrialled, knee jerk rule changes at the behest of the tv broadcaster (puke) and condoning rorts at the trading table (puke), until the rest of the teams lose their minds at ridiculous salary dumps by clubs that simply can't control their budgets.

This backending of contracts in itself is fine (be warned players) but when you get two years into a four, five, six or seven year deals where you get what you want from the player or the player gets injured or loses form and then you just dump the player and pay a chunk of their salary for someone else to take on the deal is a looming disaster for the competition imo. Paying a chunk of salary to someone no longer on your books should be banned right now for a start.

Poorly run clubs are rorting the system, paying overs to secure players but not having to pay the consequences for poor decisions because they have been given the ok by the league to just dump the player when in most cases it doesn't work out.

Because there are no consequences, clubs will continue to sign players on ridiculous contracts willy nilly and get away with it.

Why bother with contracts if they aren't worth the paper they're printed on ?
Spot on

What a total domination of trade period by Geelong. It's almost like there were no other teams trading at all. Look at their (lifted from AFL site today) new best 22. Can't you see the impact that their trading has to their best team. Wow, extraordinary job there fellas. You won trade period by SO MUCH !

View attachment 1540981

Oh wait, hang on...Geelong didn't recruit a single best 22 player...but, but, but the media was astounded ! The media said Geelong WON the trade period ! They DOMINATED !

The truth is they picked up a few mostly unproven kids who are fringe players. Bowes will be lucky to play seniors at all this year unless there's injuries (that was all about getting pick 7 for Jye Clark*), Jack Mr Yips with a shocking technique and a bad attitude Henry couldn't hit the broad side of a barn from 20m out and is unlikely to play seniors unless there's an injury and Tanner Bruhn is a long way from best 22 and is unlikely to play seniors unless injury cover.

Apologies if I am pissing on anyone's bullshit narrative. How, in anyone's language did Geelong win the trade period ? Please !

Only would be better if they miss out on Clark

This is the only comment I question, my gut tells me this Geelong windfall wasn’t a case of luck. There’s skullduggery in play here.

Otherwise your post is spot on, Gil and the AFL are a joke.

And the Hawthorn racist saga isn’t over yet.
Yes SH used to work at AFL house before returning to the Cats last year about the time the cats then suddenly made an approach to a fringe player on a big salary with 3 years to run on his contract in a side that needed to salary dump but that doesn’t mean anything inappropriate happened. The only thing inappropriate is the AFL silence

Nice to see Freo are sponsoring a team from Bankwest.

Some fun stats to get your week started:

Carlton - 2 finals games won in the last 21 years
Essendon - 18 years since last finals win
Collingwood - 2 flags in the last 64 years

Numbers don’t lie, they’re a bunch of manifestly inadequate clubs

Pies third last flag 1845

Forget flags for the Pies. The key stat is they have won one single Grand Final in the last 64 seasons. One.

Always amazes me how much of a stink characters like McGuire kick up about their sacred black and white ... and then they go and slap this big red abomination on the front, and god know what other colours even bigger on the back!

Hard to take them seriously.

So Ross the Boss is back at StKilda confirmed this morning. StKilda say they want an old school tough guy with no compromise because Rats was seenn as too good a bloke. Not tough enough to push them to a flag.

Yet it's also been reported that Lyon has found his charm and isn't the old tough hombre he was back then. Now he's an empath and has got in touch with his feelings. That's great, good for you Ross but not really what the Saints said they were looking for.

Something wrong with this picture.

Good pick to the Saints.

Good feelings.

Likely to end up leading them nowhere much.

Saints looked like they had dodged the threat of merger by north being so shit. This puts it back to a 50:50 proposition.

What a bunch of gimps.

LOL getting Ross back as coach after the way he left.

I don't think he's going to make much difference to them. Another decade of nothingness for the Saints.

If Ross is committed to empathy and the Aints want to stand for something, it's pretty clear from

“The boys celebrated anything”: Goal machine’s recollection of the Saints

“It was a bit hard to celebrate, but I must admit at St Kilda in those days, they never used the gym but by gee, they did some heavy lifting in night clubs".

Ross gotta bring back "the infamous Saints Disco at Moorabbin which housed plenty of extra-curricular and after-hour off-field activities".

Aints stand for fun!
