Melbourne were never in the running because the AFL had already earmarked Geelong to ”win” the flag in 2022.

I remember not being able to beat Geelong for about 15 years so that final win in 2017 was sweet.
In the 2000s I thought they played a different style of footy . I think we borrowed the run, knock the ball fwd, fwd hand balls. Look for a better target inside 50. Sometimes turning it over.
Plus I can't believe how they never bottom out. Make the most of the home ground advantage and of players wanting to return to the area..
Finish high up the ladder year in year out.
GF in 2020. Win one in 23.

If you "loathe copping what a pack of whingers we are" - here's a thought, stand up for your club.

I already explained why I'm not doing your research for you. If you want to plaster your uninformed opinion here for all to see, when these issues have been debated here for years now and basically resolved in the affirmative - yes SHocking did alter the rules and changed the fabric of the game to stop one dominant team - then you go for it. But be prepared for the backlash from all the people here who have seen the piles of evidence anecdotal or not.

Or perhaps stop and ask yourself this: why DID steve hocking change the rules ? Was he just bored ?

Finally, "listen to what the club says, not just hangers on". I'm actually insulted by this. I told you previously I don't inform my opinions lightly and then you give me that bs. Perhaps have a chat with Richmond's Head of Football Neil Balme about why he isn't on speaking terms anymore with former friend and the bloke he mentored for many years at Geelong, Steve Hocking. It's clearly stated by Neil in the book Neil Balme A Tale of Two Men by Anson Cameron that he can't even talk to SHocking anymore because of what he did to the game. He thinks it's despicable. I happen to agree with Richmond's HEAD OF FOOTBALL. Maybe you just consider him a "hanger on" ?
