I used to live near there. When I bought a house they were promising a train line. Still waiting lol.
Imagine 160K people and no train, that carpark was bad enough with 70K at VFL Park.

They promised them a lot, train line and bus terminal so they could play the Grand Final there, but basically when John Cain and his MCC member mates realized they would miss out on easy GF tickets they reneged on the promises.

If you look at the capacity of the MCG without MCC members it's less than 80k, Waverly would have doubled that.

Yeah but without a train line out to Waverley it was never gonna be viable. The main reason VFL Park was demolished was the land value. The AFL made a fortune out of selling that.

campaigners got a 7% win record at the g tho

fages walks in and shits his dacks before the game even strats
compared to colonwood 0.5% in grand finals 🤣🤣🤣

The then Vic Govt promised they would build a train line with a station at the Waverly ground as well as a bus terminal, but then reneged on those promises, that's what stopped further development. My Aunt was in the know back then and John Cain said they will never let them move the GF from the G to Waverley. This turned it into a white elephant, and since land values increased the only viable thing to do was to sell the land. They did play the 1991 GF there only because the G was being renovated.

Not many P1 members actually ended up missing out in the end. Just those whose card declined (which they have time to update) and those who didn’t select standing.
Those in P2 that may have got better seats, probably only did because they took single seats that were left overs. The system clearly doesn’t allocate seats very well to avoid that.

100% correct TigFan. John Cain did say he would never let them move the GF to VFL Park and therefore would not build a train line. I believe he was also on the board of the MCC so a huge conflict of interest there. The league would have made a fortune from that land though.

17k supporters tickets for each team grand final day, still a joke.

I do feel sorry for that trade draft bloke who can't get a ticket and a die hard Pie.

I remember the stress of getting tickets.

With increasing membership numbers, maybe the G has to be rebuilt?
Eddies wants a roof.

I think the MCG was the right move purely due to its central location.
Waverley was always a bit of a white elephant. Imagine our 2017 Grand Final after party if it was at Waverley? Rowville Macca's would have been busy.
