Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on our use of the sub.

Personally I don't believe Mitch Wallis is a good choice as substitute. This guy is an accumulator of possessions and needs all the confidence he can get from playing consistently. Also he's not a game-breaking runner which is what I think you need to be as a sub - come on late in the game and get into space and/or break the lines.

I think players like Djerkurra or Sherman are much better options.

Yeah, I agree. I mentioned in the gameday thread I was disappointed Mitch was the sub. Needs to get some full games, and get some confidence. He's been flying since round 4.

DJ is a good sub, and Higgins did a good job against Melbourne (but I'd prefer he played full games).

Wallis was a poor choice. He was building some form.

I think you need to have someone with a bag of tricks come in, you want that unplanned element in their game to come out as others tire. Either that or you just bring fresh legs into the midfield rotations late in the game, 3 qtr time or so.

I have a feeling it's a time management thing without wanting to ruin his confidence by dropping him. I think when Tutt is fit one of he Sherman or DJ will be sub.

I agree. Can't wait to see Tutt back in the side, DJ and Sherman play the sub ok

I also think DJ and Sherman make the best subs. I think DJ deserves a spot in the starting 18, but his pressure plus fresh legs could be valuable.
I also think Cooney should be considered as a sub maybe every three weeks or so. He is not a workhorse but has a lot to give as an impact player.

Cooney as sub every few weeks wouldn't be too bad. I would personally prefer he play full games because he is so valuable. Don't let the comentators sway you into thinking he is done for. The guy still has great pace and is very smart with the footy. He will just be utilised differently. Will be even more damaging once he gets used to whatever role it is he is playing.

That being said, I remember last season when he came on as the sub in one of his first games back. Pushed Ward out of the center square, ball up, took the ball after the tap and got a super clearence out of the middle. Pretty sure it resulted in a goal.

That's the definition of a super sub.

Couldn't agree more . Needs to be am impact player , DJ & Sherman deserve to be in the 21 at the minute perhaps Dickson or even Skinner could have a real impact and boot a couple quickly

DJ, Dickson, Cooney, Tutt, Moles, Howard and Smith. I only see these as being decent subs, i wouldnt want to see anyone else. Prefer Cooney to be a sub a few times rather than having a whole game off.
Smith would come out with fire if used as a sub too.

Agree about the impact player part but I think we lack impact players and have other development needs. For mine the sub can be used to get games into pups without fatiguing them over the year. Rotate the sub role between Libba, Wallis, Smith, Tutt, maybe Pearce and even Cooney if his knee warrants. Giving them a break every five or so weeks but keeping them in the team will have benefits down the track IMO .

I can only recall Wallis being sub for one other match, his first game of the season. He played full matches against Melbourne and GWS, it's obvious he needs to be time managed, along with Libba, Roughead and Cordy to ensure they can get lots of games into them over the season.

The question for me, is, does Wallis get more benefit from being a sub once a month playing seniors over either being rested altogether or being dropped back to the VFL. Every time he goes back to VFL he dominates and is clearly too good for that level, my view is that it's more beneficial being in the seniors and playing at the required intensity to make him a better player.

I think Sherman and Djerkurra are offering more than enough to justify being in the starting 21, particularly Sherman who has been very good since his return (despite receiving a corky early in last week's match). He creates scoring opportunities and takes the game on, something we need to keep doing.

Yep totally agree with the poster on this.
You need someone who can exploit with dash and endurance.

Wallis has to work into a game in my opinion - needs to be in the middle and amongst it to add value. We always heard he had an outside but we are yet to see it at AFL level.

On the flip side I think Libba is a great one to be subbed out of games. He generally kills them in the first half to 3 quarters but is not quite at the point of running out games... sometimes he looks to be standing still in the last quarter.
