What. A. Day. It matches day 9 of Tokyo where we won 4 gold as one of my favourite days of Olympics ever. 3 gold yesterday, but the stories made them all the more special. Cam McEvoy, who’s career was all but over, reinvented himself and wins gold at the age of 30. Kaylee McKeown securing the double-double, our first ever. Incredible. Then Saya Sakakibara winning an incredibly emotional BMX gold. There were tears, at the venue, in the tv studios, in my loungeroom. The gold, the background of Saya, the fact that we won 3 golds in under 90 minutes, it was an emotional high that is rarely achieved.
It wasn’t all about the golds. Jess Fox started her campaign for a third gold, the Stingers beat Canada in the water polo. It wasn’t just good news, the Boomers and Kookaburras went down, but Canada have given the Boomers a lifeline. The athletics began, with the decathlon gearing up for a thrilling conclusion tomorrow morning. Our high jumpers both had great days and qualified for the final.
Day 8 highlights:
Ebden/Peers attempt to win tennis doubles gold. A huge effort and one that has gone under the radar. Women’s singles gold between Zheng and Vekic.
Kurtis Marschall is in action in the pole vole, the iconic men’s road race takes to Paris, with a strong Aussie contingent of O’Connor, Matthews and Clarke. Hockeyroos play Spain, men’s water polo faces another huge task against Hungary, the Fox sisters are in the kayak cross. 3x3 basketball, women’s 100m SF (Bree Masters) and final.
Swimming sees Kaylee McKeown attempt a third gold in the 200 IM, but I’d settle for a medal. Women’s 50m freestyle heats and semis, Short looks to salvage something in the 1500m, men’s and women’s 4x100 medley heats. Temple in the 100m buttery final, women’s 800m final with Titmus and Pallister trying to stop Ledecky winning another gold. And the mixed 4x100 medley final, can we claim another gold? Huge night in the pool.
