Pathetic post. Knights has done a great job. We've improved greatly this year and all thinks are positive. Sure we may have fallen away, but NO ONE in the competition would have expected us to be in the 8 so close to the end of the season. Other clubs were expecting us to finish in the bottom 4. I'd say we're close to the most improved team in the league.
We've got many positives in the likes of Hurley and Prismall. If they someone like Prismall and Welsh can get a full pre season in them, who knows what we can do. Neagle has shown some positives at his time at full forward. If he can lose the puppy fat and get more hunger in his game he could become quite dangerous. Pears has been brilliant and if he can get some more beef he and Hurley are going to be a geat pair down back.
I'm very happy with how Matty Knights has used this list to our advantage. All signs point to forward, there's no need to be negative.

By your reckoning, the club should have sacked Sheeds before the '81 season after two mediorce years.

Ironic you say that he should take his Richmond methods back to tigerland considering that sacking coaches before they've had any chance is Richmond's forte.

Good post Sean.
Knights over achieved early on this year and this is the reason why we are disappointed. To some extent, we are still paying for the latter part of the Sheedy reign - our senior players (25+) do not measure up to most other teams in the comp. They are particularly important when playing interstate.

A youth policy doesn't mean you go youth all the time. Skipworth was drafted specifically to fill an age bracket.
Kids to have played other than Myers: Pears, Hooker, Hurley, Zaharakis, Neagle, Quinn (yes I know, but he's lookin a good'n), Reimers...
Going into this season everyone thought the forwardline would be the one area of the team that would take care of itself, but injuries have a real effect, even if that sounds like a tired excuse. Last year we kicked plenty of goals - our defence was the big problem. This year that problem has been addressed but forward line plans have been halted by injury and a lack of midfield experience (i.e. consistency). Knights' attack plan involves a lot of goalkicking mids. Usually when we lose a game we should otherwise win our midfield has a lot to do with it. If they do the gameplan properly they will naturally kick a lot of goals (and deliver better to what there is of a forward line).
What would you do with Ryder?
Only good things forced by injuries? What about the defence this year? What about the new level of professionalism at the club? What about the fact that I and many others actually sense a direction for our on field future?
Today and last week sucked, but the suckiness of them was down to the mental aspects of the game. That'll get sorted with experience. Coaches aren't magicians.

He has to take some responsibility for the insipid performances of the last couple weeks, as well as some of the very strange selection decisions, but he deserves to see out his contract. Would want to make finals next year though.

I dont agree with Kelvin but what i am concerned more about is our lack of improvement in the skills area. This needs to improve 150% for us to even be taken seriously as a team. It hasnt improved since Matthew has been coach imo.

Well I guess Bellchambers is also an under developed body but it sounds like Knights knows he can't keep sending Ryder in the ruck, alone like this but continues to do it anyway.

What's the excuse for this? We knew as soon as he picked the side it would be an issue and Skipworth adds very little to our team.
Surely at some point he could have brought in Bellchambers. I'll quote you something from a Bomber Magazine earlier in the year that Knights said

Knights will see out his contract. He'll be under intense media pressure next season if we get off to a slow start.

Port Adelaide Coach 2004: 7 wins 13 Losses (35% win ratio)
Bendigo Bombers Coach 2005-7: 20 wins 35 Losses (36% win ratio)
Essendon Coach 2008- : 16 wins 24 Losses (40% win ratio)
At least the winning percentage is heading north i guess.

Complete over-reaction as usual by Kelvin. However he does raise some valid points; match-day selections have left me baffled lately, as well as moves during the game (Lucas in the ruck/down back for one). However as Ant has pointed out, Knights doesn't have final say on the team selection. There are others at fault here, too.

OP, pretty harsh mate. It wasn't too long ago that your man was hailed for his coaching abilities for smashing our boys for the 2nd time this year. Which was an actual drumming compared to our Collingwood game, he out coached us something shocking.
Someone with that ability has got to be a keeper. You hardly expected to be challenging the big teams this year did you?
Teams like Carlton, Essendon, Richmond are in the middle of lengthy rebuilding phases... that will see them rise to the top again soon enough. well maybe not Richmond...

My main issue is the skills area. When Knights was appointed, he stated he wanted to raise our skill base. If anything, our skills have gone backwards. Our kicking is shocking, decision making is poor etc. We really need to improve this area significantly if we are to challenge in the future.

Would someone care to translate the unintelligible post above for me, please? Sheedy only started coaching us in 1981, and made the finals in each of his first six seasons with the club.
As for Knights, I'm rapidly losing patience with him. I can't see almost any upside from where we were two years ago. Other than that the club has benefited from the improvement in a lot of young and emerging players. However, this is something that would have almost certainly have naturally happened anyway, regardless of whom was coach.
Our skills are dreadful, we can't string consecutive wins together very often, our 'gameplan' is regularly torn apart by good/better coaches, we have too much faith in certain players who need to be given an almighty kick in the posterior and, for the second year running, it's clear the players have become horribly flat and tired by the last third of the season. The absence of an obvious plan of attack and the lack of skill, intensity and energy in the side in the Richmond and WC games has been nothing short of disgraceful.
I might add it made me extremely angry today to see Knights sitting in the box just before the siren at the start of the third quarter laughing and joking in the coaches' box. FFS, we're playing extremely poorly with a finals spot firmly on the line - and people are laughing in there? Totally unlike how it once was at this great and proud club.
