Paul Duffield's 150th

As his BF buddy it is my duty and honour to create a congratulatory thread for Paul Duffield on his upcoming 150th game and ensuing Fremantle Football Club life membership. A product of the mighty red V, having arguably his best year in purple. Unsung but very valued within our defensive collective.

Well done Duffman, I shall chug heartily in your honour. Oh yeah!

his debut match was against St Kilda

And not just any match against St Kilda...but Sirengate, which in its own way was another milestone in the club's history where we refused to be bullied by the AFL any more.

Duffers has been something of a quiet achiever over his career, and not without some serious question marks over his ability to compete in one-on-ones and attack on the ball generally (he was almost as poor as Ballantyne in last year's GF if I'm honest), but I'm delighted to see him reach the life membership mark.

Quite aside from his invaluable kick ins and offensive drive out of the backline, the highlight of his career to date must be finding himself in the right place at the right time to kick the sealer against Geelong in Round 3 2010. When I think of Duffield, it's invariably in mid-scream from that day with his fisted arms pumping in celebration.

In career best form this year, has had a couple of moments in his career which he would rather forget (ducking his head and the Gunston non smother in the GF) but he has been bloody good value for us. Great user of the ball and has improved his one on one defence since RTB came in to coach.

Best game Zi saw him play was the EF in 2012 at the G. He is one of the best 'under pressure' kicks in the league. One of the first to understand the Ross Lyon method. He knows his place and plays it very well. Wonderful player to have on our side.

Full credit to the Duffman for making 150. Not our strongest body, but a deceptively talented player who was coasting in 2012 when he was responsible for a very costly turnover against the Crows in what proved a decisive stage of the match. Was (rightly) dropped and came back a few weeks later with a renewed hunger. His 2013 was outstanding and he played an essential linking role in defence, with the composure that was needed to make RTB's possession game work.

Also kicked one of my favourite goals of 2013 in the prelim, taking the ball at full pace and kicking off just a couple of steps from outside 50.

I remember him early on in one of the Derby's in 2006 - thinking wow - we've got a ready replacement for Roger Hayden when he retires.

Hasn't quite lived up to the time and space bending level of Roger, but he has been really consistent in the last few years, and one of the best kicks from the back line in our team, if not the competition, he almost never turns it over.

Congratulations to him on 150 ! Hopefully his Uncle can write something nice about it in the West - easily the best football journalist in WA.

Is that you Mark ??

Is that you Mark ??
Not of the Duffield variety !

Saying he is the best football reporter in WA doesn't really say much though of course .... you have Hackdorn, Basil, Karl, Barra, Hardie, a couple of other West reporters who I forget, the guy who does WA Today, Corbin Middlemass ?

One of my favourite Fremantle players as his rebound defending is among the best in the AFL; I'd say last year was his absolute best year but may be proven wrong again this year. He's a vital cog in our defence and necessary to our Flag credentials.

Onya Duff!

My first memory of Duff is from a pre-season scratch match that was against Port at Freo Oval when he was on the rookie list.
He was scooting around off half back and seemed to have more time and space than anyone else out there and that pinpoint kick.
My mate and I were like, who is that guy? Been a fan ever since, definitely think his offensive abilities outweigh any perceived deficiencies in the physical side of his game. Has matured beautiful into decent shutdown player who provides great link up and run & carry with his obvious ability to deliver the ball well inside 50.

Well, I often think he actually played often a quite similar role to Harry O (or however he is called now) but did it with better average career stats and much less notice...

I think Duff needs to talk to the media about his experiences of evading knife wielding "gangs" on the streets of Darkan.

Thanks for doing this...as his fellow buddy! I have been on an island off Cairns for the past few days and had no internet access.

He has had an awesome season since he became my buddy :)

Always enjoyed watching him when he played for Soufs and have enjoyed watching him play for Freo.

150? Gee, that's gone quick. The older you get, the faster it goes.:(
