Warriors draft wrap and projected best 22

Pick 34 - Will Powell (GCS): There has been plenty of scorn for the Suns after taking an unknown kid with Pick 19, but Warriors couldn't overlook him with Pick 34. Suns will give him every chance to make it, and having been likened to Jack Martin in playing style, if he makes it he should be a beauty.

Pick 47 - Bailey Fritsch(Melb: This was the guy I was hoping to originally select with Pick 34! Fritsch is a high marking forward, who could slot right into Melbourne's forward line.

Pick 61 - Gryan Miers (Geel): I was hoping to pick Miers up with Pick 47/48, but after trading Pick 48 to Deeman, and having Fritsch still on the board, I was in a pickle. In the end I decided to take a punt that Miers would still be there at Pick 61 and it paid off. Miers is a small forward who is famous for his 7 goal Grand Final effort, but Warriors are hoping he can evolve into a midfielder in time. Warriors think this is the recruit with the most potential.

Pick 61 - Kyron Hayden(North): Hayden has one of the best highlight vids I have seen. He is a tough midfielder with silky skills. Will have a delayed start after shoulder surgery, but has a great chance at North to develop into an AFL player. Hayden was a bit of a smokey pick in some ways given some of the other talent on the board, but the Warriors were happy to take a punt given we had got our two main targets in Fritsch and Miers.

Squad breakdown:

Backs - 15
Centers - 13
Rucks - 3
Forwards - 17

Warriors probably should have grabbed a ruckman.... oh well..

Projected best 22:

B: Harlett Gunston Rich
HB: Byrne-Jones Yeo Broadbent
C: Duncan M.Crouch Sidebottom
R: Naitanui Fyfe Steven
HF: D.Rioli Wood Lynch(Adel)
F: Fasolo Wright Gresham
Inter: Ziebell, B.Hill, Nankervis, Harmes

Depth:
Backs - Cutler, Conca, Sexton, B.Williams, Perryman, Vickers-Willis, Markov, Cole, Aish
Centres - Cousins, Menadue, Hayden
Rucks - Cameron
Forwards - Bugg, Taberner, Simpkin, Parsons, Zurhaar, Ronke, Powell, Fritsch, Miers

I like my collection of developing backs, but am lacking some quality forwards and midfield depth. Hopefully my draft will in time help in those areas.

B: 12
C: 9
R: 4
F: 13

F/C: 4
F/B: 1
B/C: 1

Decent balance. Lost Adams as a B/C but got Blakely to replace him so all good.

Picked up Ed Richards and Matthew Ling as half back flankers who were taken in the first round. Also nabbed Tim Kelly as a ready to go C and Scott Jones as a ready to go R, both in their early 20s.

Best team something like...

B: L Hodge, H Taylor, G Birchall
HB: B Vince, S Hurn, C Blakely
C: J Kelly, D Hannebery, S Coniglio
R: T Goldstein, T Adams, B Cunnington
HF: R Gray, J Watts, J Billings
FF: E Betts, J Riewoldt, J Bruce
I/C: Lu Ryan, R Douglas, N Wilson, T Kelly

Depth
B: T Stewart, J Hunt, C McKenna, T Williamson, E Richards, M Ling
C: C Masten, E Langdon, J Kennedy-Harris, K Langford
R: T Nicholls, B Preuss, S Jones
F: T Dickson, L Greenwood, J Anderson, R Knight, K Turner, L Webb, H McKay, T Stengle, Z Fisher

Draft done.

12 - Zac Bailey (BRL, C)
Inside mids are huge in this game. While Bailey will likely not play too much in 2018, I like his future prospects as Brisbane strive in their rebuild.

22 - Liam Ryan (WCE, F)
Ryan is the other half of the mosquito fleet every Eagles supporter is talking up. Kicked monster amounts of goals in 2017 in the WAFL after failing to be drafted.

27 - Charlie Spargo (MEL, C/F)
Spargo was Melbourne's first pick and had been rated a top-10 talent coming into the season. Will be one to watch develop, particularly as the Dees come on.

36 - David Mirra (HAW, B)
You don't recruit a 26-year-old for no reason. Mirra has played the Hodge role at Box Hill, and could quickly slot into Hawthorn's backline if needed, particularly with Birchall struggling for fitness.

50 - Dom Barry (PTA, C)
Bit of a homer pick from me, but since returning to footy after retiring from Melbourne he has torn it up in the NTFL by all reports. Likely to be a bolt from the clouds.

67 - Jesse Joyce (GC, B)
Joyce is a very intriguing prospect, particularly given Saad has now departed the Suns. Played 17 games in 2017 and likely to remain in the side. Although Hanley and Harbrow are most likely for the HB slots, I like Joyce's chance to develop into that role in the near-future, particularly since he is still so young.

Zac plays for Brisbane!

Lions future midfield looks lit; McCluggage, Berry, Witherden, Mathieson, Keays, Bailey

Finally some optimism for Brisbane fans!

My draft is over.

I picked a bunch of guys who I hope become regular best 22 players. Hopefully I have fluked a star.

Unlike you fappers I understand it will be completely random if they are good enough and it will largely be based on luck and most will be out of the league inside 3 years.

QED

Any chance I can get in this league or way to late?

Regardless, I want to start up a keeper league like this if anyone is interested

How does the draft work? Just for rookies or players on waver in there too?

Our draft had rookies +all players that weren't selected as keepers (i.e. free agents).

Flag favourites went with 4 young mids late in draft all with a great competitive approach. Tough to find a gem and talk em up too much but I do think Brayshaw will be the surprise packet going so late.

Garlett - Ex first rounder. Looks beyond his family concerns and ready to show the baggers exactly what we’re after.
Brayshaw - West Coast need more mids, might get an early look.
Cunningham - Has been in the game for a couple years, this is an important one for him at blues, willing to take that chance he goes next level.

Just so no one has a fit like some of the more precious players did last year - how many free agents can we sign over the season? Still 5 or did we increase to 10 so you battlers can churn through the free agent pool until you fluke a good one? :p

As it should be - real lists don't get unlimited churn each season
Agree, personally just feel 5 is *too* low. 10 allows you to take a little bit more of a risk without a little less chance of getting seriously burnt.
