Pavlich staying?

It was reported on 7 news in Adelaide (I assume they would've got the story from WA) that Pav is on the verge of signing a new 3 year deal with Freo. It was reported that a free agency clause would be built in that could be exercised at the end of the 3 years, if he wants to go (not that he necessarily will).

Obviously thought you guys would be interested in this news.

The 3 year bit sounds good FF, but you have to remember that Pav was on the verge of signing a contract at the end of May. I'm afraid we are all going to have wait until he's signed before we can breathe a sigh of relief (or start to dream about 3 years time in your case ;))

:D haha ... I'll leave the dreaming to the crowies, cos that's where I'd expect him to go, if he left Freo after this contract - if you guys get it together he may well finish up a one club player anyway ... and really, that's what you'd want from a captain.

That seems unlikely given that there is no way for Adelaide to recruit him without a trade (unless they finish 16th in 3 years time). Must be more like an agreement to trade him to the club of his choice given an acceptable offer. i.e. not dumping him into the PSD (Carlton) if he decides to leave the club.

Thanks for the update.

I think having Pav for 3 more years is pretty decent compensation. I'd do that in a heart beat.

That said its probably more a case of what CP has outlined, we'd obviously get something for him and if it is just a case of 'maybe i want to go home' then perhaps that still leaves a 2 team bidding war to occur.

Channel 7 just reported it but said that it is believed that if after 3 years he wants to head home they wont stand in his way. So I assume that means they will get something for him but won't hold him ransom at the club.

Mind you they reported the deal had only been put on the table.

If we don't win a flag in the next 3 years, with Pav as the spearhead, the rest of the team hungry, with Sheedy/Harvey as coach then we don't deserve to win one. Its fair all round. In fact it just shows what an honourable bunch of crew we've got down at the Port.
The future looks very bright to me.

The AFL players association are pushing for free agency after 7 years service. I wouldn't be surprised if that comes into effect in the next few years which could mean we lose him for nothing down the track. We'll cross that bridge in 2010 though.

IMO - If Pav stays for another three years.

He should be given a grand farewell, made life member of the club and allowed to go home to the club of his choice. He has already given great service and some of his best football years to Freo and another three years would be the a real bonus.

It is a privilege to have him as the captain of the club.

Yeah but I'd want something in return....

You don't give away a 7 x AA, 5 x B&F, dual Coleman Medallist, Norm Smith medallist, 500+ goal, 250+ game, premiership captain, who's still only 28 years old with still another 5 years left in the game, and not want to get something in return... ;)

IP - you are probably right and a deal to get something back is the way to go. But there are times when one has to look at what he has given and work to make sure he gets where he needs to get too, which is home.

Pav will go down as one of our all time best in many aspects - footballer, leader, character etc etc .

Edited.

Think you left a word out by accident.

Just to clarify its not a free agency clause added to the ended of the 3 years. Apparently if Pavlich wants to go home after the 3 years is finished FFC have to arrange a trade back to Adelaide/Port Adelaide. In some ways it will be free agency because 2 teams will play off against each other.

Good News, must get along with harvey.

I hope Harvey gets the job for 08, looks like the players respect him.

You forgot dual Brownlow medalist.

I reckon if we get Pav to sign for another three then we we've got him for life. By then he would have been here for ten years, captain for 4 - and hopefully engaged to a nice Perth girl. He'll be too emotionally invested to want to leave. Plus then we're only one re-signing away from rewarding his loyalty with a big fat veterans list contract.

Of course that's assuming we finally get our shit together and become the powerhouse club we've been threatening to be.

on a practical level I think you're right.

which is why it's such a meaningless thing. if he wants to leave after 3 years, they need to arrange a fair trade anyway. no different to now.

the AFL would never sanction any sort of 'free agency' clause.

Of course ... you young single homebody girls out there, get cracking. Tie this guy down. Extra criteria is you must be particularly fertile and with a mother that insists that she be close to the grand kiddies. This will not only add to the 'emotional tie' but also ensure some decent 'Father Son Rule' players for the Dockers future. :p:thumbsu:

In all seriousness though, I'd be surprised if he's singed anything. He's been saying all season he intends to leave it 'til the end of season. Until I see the signed sealed and delivered contract, then I'm not counting any chickens.
