Melodically I'd take Nirvana every day of the week. I like Melodic bands though - PJ had some good songs, Yellow Lead Better is a great track, as is Rearview Mirror, as is Corduroy - but I'll take Nirvana thanks, they just had a sound I prefer, and Cobain was a melodic genius.

Don't know that their lyrics were that great, but honestly, Cobain conveyed a lot regardless of what actual words he used.

Yeah, would agree with that....

Kurt once stated that while he never cared about "best lists", he did read a list of great songwriters of the time that Eddie was on, and he wasn't - and thus he felt a tad jealous.

I would be too, Vedder has NOTHING on Cobain as a songwriter.

I mean, you can make a case for PJ being better than Nirvana (I'll still disagree) but Cobain had it ALL over Vedder

They're both different types of songwriters, Cobain doesnt have it all over Vedder, they have diferent styles in their writing, Vedder probably couldnt do what Cobain does and vice versa.
Black is the best written song from both bands, and I dont think Cobain would be able to do a song like that

You're right. I can say, unequivocably, that Cobain could most definitely not write a song like Black.

Absolutely rJ.

Nirvanna were streets ahead of PJ in every facet in my book. They drew inspiration from a number of genres, they were innovators.Pearl Jam were bland, uninspiring.

I remember when they first toured Melbourne, the feeling was this is actually something new.

Ironically for me,although they wrote some really deep songs both lyrically and musically my favourite still to this day is Son of a Gun a fast and simple number.

Nirvana for me all the way. Kurt was a genius and in my opinion it's the songs you don't hear on the radio that are the best!

My favourite song is Aneurysm and the passion in it blows me away. It may not be about the best subject but it gets me every time. It can be translated to be about love for a person like I wish it had been, then he might still be here....

Having said that I also like Pearl Jam but Nirvana have left a bigger impact and after Vitalogy PJ kind of lost me. Nirvana will never lose me and give me some of my greatest inspiration.

I wouldn't be because Vedder was better than Cobain. Each to their own, I guess.

You can certainly make an argument for Vedder being the better singer, but as a songwriter he isn't, individually, anywhere near Cobain.

You can make an argument for PJ writing songs as good or better than Cobains (I'll still disagree though) but you simply can't, without a severe lack of knowledge, claim Vedder, as an individual songwriter, can, has or will write better than Cobain did.

Thats rubbish, its a matter of opinion. To say that someone who thinks Vedder is a better songwriter than Cobain has a "severe lack of knowledge" is an arrogant thing to say and is absolute crap.

IMO Nirvana aren't a particularly good band and PJ have it all over them :thumbsu:

Mate, first of all i think we need to clarify what we mean by "song writing" here.

Are we just talking lyricists, or the whole shebang i.e music and lyrics.

Because if thats the case, then you should be able to drop me the names of the tunes that Eddie Vedder has written or co-written for Pearl Jam or other projects before being able to start pointing the "severe lack of knowledge" finger at people.

Now i'm honestly not expecting you to, and thats not necessarily a criticism by the way as i know you aint that much of a fan of PJ past their first or second albums. We've had that discussion before.

But ya gotta be careful when making accusations of ignorance etc because self righteous, overly wordy pricks like me will then jump on and things will get messy.

I'm referring to music and lyrics yes, last I heard songs aren't made up entirely of lyrics.

Vedder certainly wrote some good lyrics, no denying that. I also think he had a better voice, in some respects not in others, than Cobain - but I don't think he could write as melodically as cobain, and musically he obviously couldn't write as much.

Vedder could only dream to be able to scream like Cobain...Pretty choir boy.

You deaf or something?
Cobain could only dream of being as good as Vedder in every facet of singing, love Nirvana and Kurt, but the fact is, he wasn't much of a vocalist;)

Rubbish. Vedder's melodies shyte all over Cobain's.

As opposed to your 'No music fan can honestly say Vedder's melodies are better than Cobain's?'

They aren't. But I'd like to hear the explanation for why you think they are. Show me a melody of Vedders that is better than say, the vocals on In Bloom.
