God I hope it's an AFLW game.l

Why would you want that ?
Granted it might be a bigger crowd but the AFLW game at Fremantle had the atmosphere.
For the same reason I cannot see why the NRL would want to move from Perth Oval to Perth Stadium
specially if another sport gets slotted in before them at the new stadium.

I hope the first game is the ODI on Jan 28th.

I am happy the rugby are going to use the stadium. Book the place out as much as possible. This "fight" between AFL and rugby to use the stadium first is pathetic. Just as pathetic as people whinging Ed Sheeran is going to play in it first. Do I like rugby, or Ed? Nope, not my cup of tea. Do I begrudge people using the new stadium to watch those events? Not at all. Start using the thing and get some return on the investment. Hope everyone who goes to those events has a great time, just as I will have a great time when an event is on that I want to go to.

I think it's stupid that a sport (Rugby League) that doesn't care one iota about WA thinking they need to beat AFL to the first footy game.
How did you figure that out?
Maybe the stadium management told the NRL they can't schedule in a game during the AFL season, but the stadium would be available for the first 2 weeks of NRL season because the AFL starts 2 weeks later. Why wouldn't they schedule something in?

Has the AFL put a cent into the stadium yet? Sure they will be the major tenants but they haven't even got a contract to play yet. Again why wouldn't the stadium management schedule something in? Or should they just wait around until footy finally gets its act together and signs the bloody deal before booking other events? Really who gives a crap if the NRL play before the AFL. Not going to affect my enjoyment of the first AFL game in the stadium in the slightest.

Plus the AFL pre-season was always going to have a couple of games on the ground. So they will be the first "football" code to play anyway. Or does the first football event need to be for actual premiership points to count? Do we need to be that precious? Maybe we should just have the stadium sitting idle for 4 months until the AFL are ready for round 1.

^^ Do you really think the Rugby League aren't doing a double header to try and beat the AFL to the punch? Really?? Btw - I have a bridge to sell you. Going cheap.

The AFL money not put into the stadium is a strawman argument. I didn't argue that the AFL had or deserve the first football game. I said that the NRL don't care in the slightest about WA. It is just a cynical ploy pure & simple. Try and argue that they would have played it at PS if they weren't "1st".

Convince me that:

1: the double-header would have played at PS if they didn't think it was a "first"

2: NRL care about WA

as you were arguing against those 2 points I made.

1. Couldn't give a shit.
2. Couldn't give a shit.

Why are you upset that a fairly large sporting code is interested in bringing their product to WA?
Is that not what the stadium management was employed to do?
Now you convince me that the stadium management did not contact the NRL first to see if they wanted to come. Seeing as the same management run ANZ Stadium I think they would know a contact or two in the NRL.

But if it happened the other way around... Why be mad? Its only a game.

The more events the better.

I think it's great.
Let them waste their money if that's what they wish.
After the first game of AFL nobody will care one iota.

You have to admit these Sydney-siders are like that.
They build a state-of-the-art rectangular stadium right next door to the SCG to spite AFL.
These days it's lucky to be half-full yet they want to tear it down and rebuild it again because everybody is going to the SCG. It's going to have two modes - normal for normal crowds and shut down for NRL.
There want to re-juvinate ANZ stadium. however the NRL H&Aaverage is 9k.
Real smart these cookies from the East.

For the lolz basically.

But there's some logistical issues with it. Given it's free tickets, who's going to pay for the public transport services? AFL? Or will the government step in and cover it for everyone? If it's on a Sunday, they might do that and just call it a free public transport day for everyone. The option is to make everyone pay for it and install about 100 temporary smartrider scanners at stadium station. What do you reckon an AFLW game would get anyway if it's free? 30k? I'd certainly go along to check out the stadium unless I had something important on.

Gil was just on the couch and indicated feb 10 there will be aflw or jlt pre-season game at the stadium - well ahead of the rugby double header.

Unpopular opinion, but I'd take the NRL opener just to spite that smug douche.

Gil. I do not like.

At what point does the requirement for free public transport kick in. If 30k was the upper estimate, they may not require it.

Me, too.........30k is a possibility ........but who's going to pay for the stadium cost?
I'd prefer the difference in ground hire to be put to use in football.

Have WAFL double header. East Freo v South Freo and West Perth v East Perth.
People can go and check out the new stadium and also see a reasonable level of footy.
Good for WA footy, great soft opening for the new stadium.
Win win situation.

The WAFL doesn't start until April. Unless you want a WAFL practice match. In which case you may as well make it an AFL practice match.

Will the AFLW be free next year?

Either way, a round 1 WAFL game will not be the first event held at the new stadium given the NRL is there in early March.

The WAFL could re-shedule. It's not impossible. Double-header finals re-take.
Given the option i think they would take it.
The first event will be a concert. NRL pipped by a guitar plucker.

It sounds like the NRL might be getting a discount to play at the stadium.

It was interesting to hear the comment on OTC that everyone else is getting the ground for free but they expect the AFL teams to pay millions.

Surprised the local media hasn't picked up on it and put some questions to Mick Murray.
