I think there's a fair bit of spin at play here. They'll give it a crack and I hope that they succeed, but there's too many different factors to replicate it to the iconic extent that the fans want.

Was at cricket training tonight and the topic of going to the match came up. Most agreed (apart from the few that are WACA members) that they would've gone and that they love the pitch but weren't keen to spend the day baking and would stay home instead. Kind of sucks that the weather has been pretty good for a few weeks and then the week of the test it just heats up again. :(

Was a report on Channel 9 News tonight explaining the above article, curator is very confident he can replicate the pitch and believes it is already showing promise.
I wonder if they should rip down the roof for summer and replicate the baking sensation you get at the waca

Yeah. This version of the WACA wicket is quickish and dead flat.

13 for 1000. We could have made anything if we wanted and Williamson got bored batting was so easy.

The batters are pissed off if they don't get 200.

A drop in might get a result. And they are getting better.

I'm starting to question whether it's actually the pitch that's the problem or whether they've just got a bad batch of Kookaburras. They've changed the ball too many times this test. In both innings shortly after the 80th new ball they changed a dodgy new ball to another brand new ball, and both times that new ball sparked something. New Zealand was able to take a string of wickets early on day 2, and Starc's inspired spell that was reminiscent of the WACA of old was also after they changed the new ball again in the 85th over.

As good as the +250 individual scores have been to watch. This test has been a shambles. Crap pitch, crap balls and a sight for sore eyes when you look at those run down stands in the background empty and those that are there are just baking like hot pockets

Edit: O and the sight screen drama

The security guarding the sightscreens were a f**king joke. Paid no attention and saw quite a few idiots jump through during overs.

Read an article on AFL.com about how no expense will be spared about the turf to be used. Along the lines of $8million.

It also went on to note that the roof will cover 85% of the ground - will there not be the same issues as Etihad Stadium in growing the grass etc. And also im curious for when it rains - will there be a 15% patch of the ground that will get rained on and the rest be perfect dry weather footy?

Kiwis making a game of it, so much for the pitch soothsayers.

What a embarrassingly defensive comment. You do realise that people are rightfully complaining about the ridiculous imbalance between bat and ball right? Whether or not New Zealand neutralised the match doesn't change that fact.

In an ideal world I wanted the WACA to remain the premier cricket venue in WA, but if the legendary pitch isn't there then really there is no point. It just is very poorly set up for spectators - an issue that could have been resolved had there been some foresight from the venue administrators prior to the conception of the idea for a new stadium.

You address some of the bigger issues - IF Smith was an aggressive captain, IF Smith had the same regard for a result as Clarke/Steve Waugh, the game would not have fizzled .... that crickets administration is not being held to account by the sporting media, pilloried is how we should be discussing the coverage of crickets ruling class. They should be answering the flat track issue.

I agree totally with this:

"The new 60,000-seat stadium will have a roofline covering 85 per cent of the arena, meaning lights will be used to help the grass grow."

I read that as covering a portion of the grass too
Arena being the seats, not the grass. Of course, lights would be used to grow the grass regardless... Even without any roof having a stadium that tall would mean the northern grass wouldn't get any light at all over the winter months.

85% means 85% of seats will be under the drip line of the roof, which means given the angle of the sun over the day part of the grass will spend most of the day in the shade and those areas will need artificial light to help grow the grass.

From Dockland stadium specs

Etihad Stadium features a retractable roof ensuring perfect conditions at all times. It opens and closes in less than 20 minutes and even with the roof open, 98 percent of patrons are sitting behind the drip line of the roof. When the roof is closed, the ceiling height to the underside of the support structure is 24 metres (78 feet) and to underside of the fixed structure is 35 metres.

There's people out there who like batting, and think it's the place of the bat to dominate (attack) and the ball to try and stop them (defend), too.
