Perth Stadium (Optus Stadium)

I've never been to Perth so I can't comment on the situation there, but I've been to both Football Park and Adelaide Oval on many occasions as I lived in Adelaide for a number of years.

Football Park was in a dog of a location. The ground itself and its amenities weren't that bad, but at the end of the day it would have been a poor decision long-term to persevere with it.

Since Adelaide Oval has been redeveloped, the whole riverbank area on the Torrens has been receiving an ongoing revitalisation. There's a bigger picture at play here, at least for the city of Adelaide.

The Perth stadium looks fantastic in the rendered images I've seen. I'm hoping to go to Perth in the next couple of years for a holiday, so I'll definitely incorporate a footy game within the trip.

Sadly Burswood is a dog of a location.

But it will be a great stadium

What's it like getting public transportation there? As you'd undoubtedly know, AAMI stadium sucked because there was no railway link; all public transport was by bus.

Burswood seems to be about three kilometres from the CBD. It's a bit of a hike by foot based on that, but if this new pedestrian bridge helps foot traffic and there's a train link, it shouldn't be too bad?

It'l be fine. Heaps of restaurants in claisebrook not too far from the bridge. Bars in east Perth. Probably similar to having dinner in Richmond and walking to the G, or hindley st -> north end of Adelaide oval. Train link will be seamless. Also busses will depart on the east Perth side of the pedestrian bridge so traffic will be dispersed.

In time Burswood will develop further and have more to do. But it's not as if Olympic park in Melbourne has a lot going on in the park itself. You need to walk along the Yarra to the city/walk to Richmond to get food/beers pre and post game

Is it really that terrible?

There's not the same eating and drinking options around the ground as subi but other than that I don't see the ground being any harder to get to - if anything it'll be easier

Over $300 million is going into the train and bus station, the pedestrian bridge and other improvements all designed to get the vast majority of the 60000 people out of their cars and into public transport. There will be free buses circling the city that would drop people off and pick people up at the footbridge. The Stadium is also extremely well serviced from dedicated cycle paths and there will be 600 bicycle racks installed. Barnett wanted to open a ferry stop outside the stadium as well but no word if McGowan will revisit the plan.

Perth still has a 'drive everywhere' mentality, especially from those who live in the western suburbs. Ignore those naysayers it'll be extreme easy to get to Perth Stadium from public transport.

It will be less than 5 minutes by train from Perth central. I guess a lot of people will get used to eat or drinks in the city or Northbridge before or after a game rather than hang around somewhere within walking distance of the stadium. For me I have to change trains at Perth central to catch the Mandurah line home. Be simple to pop out for a drink in the city on my way home if so inclined.

compared to AO, Burswood is a poor option.

Great for crown and great for the train but shit for a nice walk from bars and restaurants. It could have been a massive opportunity for the city of Perth like AO.

And which state owned area of land that close to the city would you have built it on?

I lived in East Perth, claisebrook cove, about 300m as the crow flies from burswood stadium. The walk to northbridge and mt lawley is a good distance about 30 minutes walk but it's through a rough part.

Being ex-military I didn't mind the walk but in the 15 years I lived there, I would have stopped 3 rapes in progress, intervened in a number of brutal assaults and ended up in a few after attempted muggings. I would not recommend doing this walk unless you are in a group, as a number of men shelters, whore houses and "locals" makes the McIver area too dangerous.

The new bridge is built in the wrong direction and doesn't lead to transport or anywhere. The old bridge is not a pleasant walk.

The transportation and the casino are convenient. but the stadium location is better suited to those who want to watch footy and just go home.

A bit of forward thinking and that ugly tin roof of the convention centre should not have been plonked in that location, under Kings Park and creating a barrier to the river. Nor should Elizabeth Quay been build in the shade collecting the rubbish from the river due to the SW breeze.

The convention centre should have been built over the top of the train line covering McIver train station. Elizabeth Quay should have been built on the South Perth foreshore.

That would have delivered a fabulous location. In fact, over the train station on the south side and moving the bus station would have been perfect.

Ok, but that's not the case. There wasn't forward thinking. So forget about that, and deal with what we've got

My wife works for the ATO and I remember a few years back she had to go to Perth to assist the rollout of a training package. The Northbridge office was where she worked for a week. She said Northbridge was like Perth's equivalent of North Adelaide.

I can't think of anywhere within a three kilometre walk of Adelaide's CBD where the type of activity or crime you've described would take place. Perhaps in the south or west parklands, but even then it's probably just the odd shady character lurking in the shadows you'd need to worry about.

No wonder they say Adelaide is boring.

I think it reasonable to assume that the question implied, which `empty` bit of land. Not which bit of land `if it was empty`. If we answer that question, I would put it on St Georges terrace, if it was empty.

In the context of the question any reasonable person would have taken "empty" as "available".
The further you go back in history the more there were "available" sites.
If you you really wanted to you could still create a site close to the CBD but you would have to be just a little imaginative
which is almost impossible for most people on this forum and of course it would entail expenditure.

The new stadium is nearing completion and we're all waiting for the opening. It sounds fantastic but don't try and re-write history
wearing rose coloured glasses. The biggest problem as we all now know is the expense.
The new government wants to give the Western Force $3 million odd to survive and $5 million to bring the Bledisloe Cup to Perth.
The old government was asking Football for $20 million in rent. How about ditch the RU and charge the old rent.
$5 million for the Bledisloe Cup plus the loss of rent @ $1 million values the event at $60 million to break even.
There is no way in the world that is a responsible economic project.
With the debt the way it is in WA the only responsible thing to do is to take as many $100 millions as in can from the AFL
and get some debt reduction by shifting some debt to the AFL.
The new stadium will always run in debt. The interest payments alone are crippling. So why are they trying ?

Turning the WACA into our premier stadium was the right option but the WACA members said no to that 15 years ago and by the time it came back to the table it was to late for the WACA.

Plus you couldn't fit any expansion on the Hay Street end where the lillie marsh stand is ... similar to ANZ stand at subi
