Would’ve knocked down the waca and started afresh

Yeah, may have lost a few years of tests against minnows,
So short term pain
But the location is perfect

I never realised how close to the city it was until I visited for rd 23 last year.
First thought was why not put it here.
As the crow flys, Perth Stadium is ~1.4km from the WACA, its hardly in the middle of nowhere.

When the commission was put together to find a spot for the stadium, the late Wally Foreman was part of the group looking at locations. Part of the idea of building the stadium was that it was future proofed for holding a commonwealth games/Olympics.

Part of hosting one of those events is that you need enough space to have a warm up athletics track. That rules out east Perth and subi automatically, and given the different landowners around east Perth might not agree, the burswood peninsula was the obvious choice.

The other issue with the waca is that it’s not directly serviced by any heavy rail, and implementing a station there would be overly costly, as you’d probably need to build a city circle which isn’t really needed.

Plus, you’d then have issues like the mcg, where 10% of the grounds capacity would be unavailable to the general public 100% of the time, as the WACA would demand their members didn’t lose out, and ultimately gain much much more

It's not the middle of nowhere, it's just currently an island of nowhere on the outskirts of the CBD cut off from anything by water and freeways, is that right?

It is not that it is nowhere, it just has no housing or industry nearby. There's the stadium, the horse-racing track and the state tennis centre nearby. Neither of those house or employ any great number of people that need to commute. The housing estates and local commercial area are much better served by the existing train station at Burswood. If you really want to have a walk around the stadium on an off day you can drive there and use the public parking that is closed on match days, or walk about 10-15 minutes from Burswood or Claisebrook.

The stadium train station is the old race-course train station suitably modified and expanded. That has been an event only station for decades before the stadium was built. There really is no need for it to be staffed on non-event days.

The WACA site was ruled out by the Stadium taskforce in 2007 for being too small.

It’s not as if they stuck the stadium in Canning Vale or something (gee imagine that, there’s certainly space for it it there..).

Burswood, is a stone throw away from the city.
Remember when people were calling for the stadium to be built at Cockburn

Spoken by someone that doesn't attend events at the WACA. The whole area goes into gridlock because you can't get the train there.

The location might look good on a map, but in practice it's a different story.

Yeah, gridlock with only a crowd of ~22,000. Can't imagine how it would go with 55,000.

Optus Stadium.jpg It is only about a 15-20 minute walk from with Claisebrook (just out of picture on the left), East Perth (upper left)or Burswood Stations.
The new footbridge will make it easier but even now there is walkways down (under) each side of the rail/traffic bridge and it’s quite a nice walk across the river.

Hi guys, not sure if this is the right place to post it but I am currently studying at Curtin University with my final year project on the new Perth Stadium transport. You might’ve seen me around the ground already asking to be part of my paper surveys. But I thought I may as well make an online survey as well to get as many participants as possible.
There’s no reward for doing the survey but it would be greatly appreciated if you do it if you have or will be going to a game at the stadium.
Especially tonight’s eagles game as I will be unable to conduct surveys this afternoon.
Please click on the link below to get onto the survey to answer some simple questions about how you will get to and from the daodum.

All results would be greatly appreciated and will remain anonymous with ethics approval received from Curtin. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to post or pm me.

Those fences along the boundary look hideous. Can the front row even see over it. Are they really necessary

I sit in the front row and the fences are great.

Only because they are not covered by sponsors signage like other grounds.
No higher than usual for front row patrons.

Btw. I was at commonwealth games athletics and this was in front of me (i was 4 rows back). 814D3E4D-072D-4E47-8B5E-3E5CDD06B217.jpeg

I find the footy on tv at optus is a duller picture than any other ground.

? The lighting is fine at night.Same sun that shines on other stadiums during the day.None of the seating is affected by the lighting during the game though so the crowd is not illuminated and theres a contrast between the lit up field and the not lit up stands. The lighting system is a generation or two ahead at the stadium.
