We could do a lot worse than have a look at Brendan McCartney if he gets flicked from Footscray. Coached Ocean Grove to 4 premierships in a row in the Bellarine League before going to Geelong which was pretty impressive given they were a struggling club for a while before that, and left a legacy there as the Grubbers have won another 4 since and remain a perennially strong club. Has a good reputation of developing young players and turning them into quality young men. Would also be known to Boaky through his dad's association.

Can we really stop him though? More money and a higher position - even though it's not head coach.

We were pretty into Watters a few years ago before the saints snagged him. What was the attraction to Watters? Would he be worth a look.

Watters was considered one of the best assistants in the league at the time and was one of the master minds behind Collingwoods premiership as defensive coach, after winning premierships with Subiaco in the WAFL.

But, a lot of the highly rated assistants over hte last 6-7 years have failed to deliver. Watters, Neeld, Bailey, McCartney, McKenna were all considered league best assistant coaches at one time or another and have failed stepping up as head coach.

As has been mentioned, I don't think that's their ultimate aim. He'll "just miss out" and they'll offer him a Director of Coaching job as consolation.....which we won't allow him to leave us for.

I think this is as much about wrenching him away from us as getting him for themselves.
Just wondering then how much I.P. He would give up in his interviews.

If he says 'You'll get what you deserve' Port will sue! :p

LOL
That's what I was worried about. He'd give up our most important public secret.

Seriously, good luck to Phil Walsh. If we lose him to the Crows, we will find someone better. Hawthorn have done ok bringing an ex coach in Ratten into their ranks. We could look at Watters or McKenna, assuming the latter's relationship with Ken wouldn't be too strained.

Honestly I'm not fussed if he gets the job. If anything to paraphrase Mr T I'd pity the fool because he has no idea the sort of goldfish bowl in the Kalahari Desert he is jumping into. With an admin and playing group with blood on its hands.

Ken is the main man at Port and if Walsh goes we will get another assistant coach and he will be part of a successful coaching team.

I don't think McKenna is all that much chop. And I'm not even sure he and Ken get along. From all reports he was pretty poor at communicating with the players.
IF we lose Phil Walsh I'd like to see us make a pitch to Lenny Hayes.
Lenny is def not going in coaching - administration is his thing now

And lets hope they're not into him. If they unveil their new "coaching group" next week and Matthew Nicks is in there I will be really pissed off.

They can take our assistants but they will never take our Alfy! Heart and soul, can't buy it no matter how hard you try.

Let's get the Dew talk out of the way. He signed a three year deal with Sydney late last year. He will not be released from that contract to be an assistant at Port. Forget him.

Yes we can.

The coaches association got involved when Roos wanted Dew to get the senior assistant role at Melbourne. Dew was contracted at the Swans and they would not release him.

Walsh is in the same boat. He is contracted. If the Crows offer him the director of coaching role, I am sure Kochie and KT will get involved very quickly.

All assistant coaches have clauses in their contracts that they can leave if they are offered a senior coaching job.

Do we really want to hire someone like Dew though?. Chances are he'll do his 1 year with us and then become senior coach..

Looks like we're the club that trains and develops senior coaches for the other AFL sides..

PAFC leading the way again!

Walsh - 3 year contract with us.

Dew - 3 years with Swans..

I don't see the difference.. No love for Dew?

Really? Walsh is going for the head coaching job. Dew would be coming here as an assistant. When he tried to go to Melbourne as a senior assistant and as the succession plan to Roos Sydney said no. It's not about Dew, it's about the realities of contracts.
