“The Homicide Squad will bring Samantha’s killer to justice, but we need the community’s help.
"There are two specific areas I need you to focus on today.
“One relates to any assistance, sightings, observations, dash cams, CCTV footage of a motorcycle travelling onto Phillip Island at any time from 7am on Monday July 23 in and about the Cowes area from about 7.30am until approximately 12.15pm , and exiting the Island sometime around 1pm.
“The second is any assistance, observations, sightings, dash cam footage, CCTV of a male wearing dark coloured pants, dark shoes and a black hooded jumper with a distinctive dark blue, broad band across the midriff and arms, around the Cowes area between 7.30am and 12.15pm and particularly around the Seagrove or Settlement Road area.

More than a few will have footage of him, even if it's their home security CCTV.

“Again, this is our appeal to the public.
1. Any sighting of a motorcycle – any motorcycle. Any sighting of a male in motorcycle gear.
2. Any sighting of a male fitting the description of that with the black/blue hoodie, on the Island between 7am and 1pm on Monday July 23.
3. “Any knowledge of any person you may know who owns or possesses such a distinctive black and blue hoodie.
4. And finally, any person who may sell those types of items, who may have sold that black and blue hoodie in the preceding days and weeks prior July

What does 3. “Any knowledge of any person you may know who owns or possesses such a distinctive black and blue hoodie." mean?

They're looking for the source of what he was wearing on the day? Or someone else was involved?

If he was seen around Cowes in what looks to be a fairly distinctive top then he'll be done for sure . It's a small place and someone will see something

The CCTV footage of the ex walking outside the house is creepy. Poor woman

Detective at the presser looks to be struggling to control his distress. How awful. I don't know what else could she have done really to protect herself and her kids up against that kind of obsession without it involving pulling kids out of school going into hiding and changing their names. Even then, this guy isn't without resources I suspect he would have found her.

Plus he wouldve known she was home alone and her parents were on holidays in the US

He'll sing like a canary I am guessing. Be interesting to find out whether it was premeditated or an argument that turned violent. To me it looks like he's attempted to hide his identity (not surprisingly) but then used an easily recognisable outfit and mode of transport. Did they find the murder weapon? If not am guessing it's in the waters below the bridge and will be very hard to find.

Anybody find it a bit curious there's reports of him going onto the island in different cars and now he has a motorbike the police don't appear to at this point actually have?

Are other people letting him use their cars and a bike to stalk his ex?

EDIT: Scratch that, the motorbike was his.

Without throwing too much speculation out there, as rumour and small towns have always gone hand in hand, but I've heard more that this violence dated back nearly 5 years and that she wasn't the only family member repeatedly abused . If true, I hope he rots.

5 years! shocking!

ch7 reported that he also had a mobile number under a fake name.

Just heard ABC report he owned that motorbike and either hers, or his DNA was under fingernails. He's left his kids without mother or father, totally devastated.

Investigators must have traced every active mobile phone on the island ... I think.

Police told the court Mr Basham owns a motorbike matching the one they were looking for.

It also heard Mr Basham's DNA was found "on objects related to the scene and the deceased person".

Detective Senior Constable Luke Farrell told the court Mr Basham was also in possession of a phone, registered under another name, which was active at the time and location of the murder.

"A mobile phone used by the accused man registered in a false name was detected on (mobile) towers on that day," he said.

Mr Basham was remanded in custody and the matter will return to court on January 10 next year.

The court sat for nearly two hours as Mr Basham's lawyer, John Sutton, argued for a suppression order over several charges against his client, separate to the murder charge.

Mr Sutton argued "sensational" and "tabloid" reporting by the media would prejudice the case and threaten the safety of Mr Basham's family.

However, Magistrate Louis Hill ruled against the suppression order for nine assault charges against Mr Basham dating back to 2009.

The suppression order over other charges doesn't surprise me if the stories I've heard are true. Will definitely make it difficult to show any compassion

There was an interim suppression order over details of the assault charges but the magistrate's lifted it and ruled against. Not sure if there's a suppression order over his images since he was charged with murder.

I've only seen one, wasn't sure what image he was trying to portray. Rally driver or one of the Von Trapp family singers.

I think that was just the only one media could track down of him

I love PI, and go there for racing a lot and wish I had a property there. I’ll be thinking of this the next time I go there
There was another vicious murder, a long time ago but which has weirdly had a bit of press recently and a book where the author portrayed the island in a negative light.

FEW tourists flocking to Phillip Island know it is also the setting of the gruesome murder of Beth Barnard.
Each year thousands of people flock to the shores of Phillip Island in search of sun, surf and sand.

But as they pass over the bridge linking the idyllic summer getaway to the mainland, what few remember is that it was the setting of one of Victoria’s most gruesome murders.

Beth Barnard.

Despite the light hearted figure he portrays at the races, I’m confident Fergus thinks about this everyday.

He lost two that night, lover and mother of his children, I'm sure you're right it's never far from thought.
