The disparity between all the phantoms shows no one has any idea. It’s a year when we’ll await Cal Twomey’s final phantom. Some even have us bidding on Kako with 9. Surely we assured the bombers. We won’t be doing that. Also saints have said they’ll start taking Sandy Drsgons players as a priority. Of course within reason. Makes me think they might go for Armstrong.

Fox Sports article about who each club should take with their first pick...

...says Dees should take a KPF
Someone on D’Land said that Jason Taylor presented at a corporate gig or whatever at the Australia Club a few days ago and told the crowd Melbourne would be taking 2 midfielders this year.

I highly doubt our recruiter would tell a crowd of people our drafting strategy. Then again, nothing really surprises me about this club any more.

3 talls is reasonable. Considering all 3 would rotate to the bench at least once a quarter or go into the ruck to give Gawn chop out.

Thats assuming all 3 are fit, not suspended and in form as well.

So it’s very rare we would actually see all 3 in the forward line at once. It would just increase the amount of time we have 2 up there if anything.

Not that I’m advocating for Armstrong though, we would be idiots to go after another KPF.

That would be a bizarre move after trading up for pick 9.
That's pretty much exactly how we ended up with the pick we used to draft Pickett. Hynes was one we were heavily linked to a while back, but pick 9 is too high for him. This could just be the author linking back to that story I guess and speculation about us moving back.

Just move Petty to defence and give Jeffo a go. Don't need this Armstrong guy.

Petty back to defence hopefully happens this year. JVR, Turner, Jefferson and Fullarton with McDonald and Petty as swing options seems to be sufficient cover for KPF's. I'd rather we prioritise mids as we desperately need a refresh in the middle, but if Armstrong is viewed as best available I'm OK with us picking him.

We didn't trade up to pick 9. We traded into this draft. Big difference. It would be perfectly reasonable to trade back for the right offer.

Pick 9 is right around that mark where a player club X loves is still there but won't be by their pick i.e.
  • GWS with pick 15,16,21.
  • Tigers with there bunch of 11-20+ picks.
  • Freo or WCE trying to jump ahead of each other for Bo Allen or someone else.
  • A club who wants best KPF or KPD before they start running off the board.
  • A guy like Tauru or Smilie that someone has fallen in love with their potential.
  • A suprise slider from top group
It is a juicy pick and great trading to grab it. So many ways we could use it if one of the players we love for it are not there. Phone will be ringing hot on draft night.

Does anyone rate Jefferson? I think most are expecting him to be a bust
Harsh!

He was drafted as a project KPF, and was always going to take time. The club is managing him really well, they're not being pressured into playing him before he's ready. It's worth noting that in his second year as a skinny 20 year old he was Casey leading goal kicker and finished 3rd in the BnF. Still has lots of learning to do, but he's build nicely.

Yeah I don't know about that, what good key forward spent 2 years developing before even getting a game?

No idea. Sam Darcy springs to mind, he may have played a couple of trash games early in his first 2 years.

If the club had any doubt then they would have just rolled the dice and seen what he had in the junk time games at back end of the year. They have a plan that they are working through with him. He'll play this year.

I stumbled across this yesterday and it's one of the most insightful pieces I've read on modern drafting (and interesting that it's not from a major media site): https://www.onepercenters.net.au/p/beyond-the-eye-test-how-analytics

The bit that really caught my eye was the club recruiter saying:

“It's a really even group – actually, probably even the top 10 is really even. Jagga Smith, based on the first half of the year, I wouldn't have touched him. That’s an exaggeration. You'd obviously take them at like 15 right, but I didn't think he was a top pick. He was one of the most selfish players I've ever seen. Then he went and played VFL, and he was awesome. And he came back to Coates League after playing VFL, and it was almost like the penny had dropped. He actually had to play team-first. So he's just been exceptional since. He’ll go early.

"Each player in the top 10 has a fairly obvious flaw. But some of the flaws aren't really that important. Some of the flaws are kind of more just about inherent uncertainty. Sam Lalor is not a good runner, but he's never done a preseason before. There are some others I kind of don't want to go too much into, but they're being touted as high draft picks and we, I, wouldn't have them anywhere near there.”

We traded 28, 40, 46, 54, 65 and a future first rounder for 9.

It would take a ridiculous offer to move it on.

**** that’s a lot. Would’ve been nice to have held onto one of those instead of relying on pick 83.

Lamb: We want your pick, how’s our F1 look?
Essendon: we want it all, your F1, 2nd rounder, third rounders and even pick 65. All of it. You’re also buying lunch.
Lamb: Say no more fam.

I agree. 2 years for a KPF who isn't naturally big/strong isn't a huge concern especially when he has had a forward line clogged up with a heap of tall AFL veterans. Was disappointed he didn't get a game or two late.

If he doesn't crack AFL next year I will start getting concerned (injuries aside).

Nah don't agree. Buddy Franklin was skinny as a rake and walked into the Hawks side. Talent is talent regardless of size. He's been kept out by a bunch of defenders, doesn't look good for him at all

I don't think it has anything to do with him not
having got a game yet, have you actually watched him play? I'm struggling to find what he will bring to the table to remain best 18 in an AFL senior side. I've been wrong a time or ten, but I just don't see a senior AFL player in this kid. I hope he proves me wrong. If he's not replacing Disco by mid year, then he looks destined for the scrap heap

Yeah I've watched him a few times on tv and live once. Agree that I haven't seen anything to hang your hat on to say he will make it but wasn't watching him specifically either.

I do find it hard to judge tall forwards in the VFL - just general delivery and often blustery or wet conditions. Maybe that's just because of how we play as well. I do think some types of players actually look better in the seniors once they crack it.

To be clear - I'm not in the pro Jeffo camp. Not in the scrap heap camp. Just in the, I haven't seen enough to even make a call either way.
