Pies 3rd Tall

Well with Cloke and Dawes looking great as the 2 main Talls and playing FF and CHF so who could be our 3rd tall:

  • Fraser - Could be as he moves well and shows when he is freed up how Damaging he can be
  • Anthony - Not Big Enough for CHF or FF but with his straight shot for Goal could be very damaging
  • Rusling - Not 100% sure he could be 3rd Tall or not but with his Speed off the Mark could be a very Nifty
So who do you think is the Best.

I think JA is with his Dead-Eye Dick Shot of Goal

Anthony, no question. I think without the best defender on him he'll be much more effective.

I'll start a new trend a go Fraser. Never a follower of the populist view.

Why I say Fraser is because I think his rucking time should be cut down from 45-50 down to around 15-25 and be used primarily up forward with Jolly playing 75-85% ruck.

Why I say this is because I believe Jolly is most effective as no.1 ruck and that he plays far better footy as Fraser did as no.1 ruck as the effective no.1 ruck where he has to play a greater % of time in the ruck. Some ruckman thrive as energy ruckman who can have impacts for brief periods but both Jolly and Fraser are ruckman who prefer being full time rucks as opposed to playing in 50/50 combinations. When I say prefer I mean they play to a better level and get a rhythm going which is why both have both had below expectations starts to the season. We all saw what Jolly could do with Sydney when he played 85% game time, so why not let him do similar in the black and white and let Fraser settle into a role primarily up forward and do some brief backup minutes when required to enable one Jolly to become more effective and to give Fraser a more defined role to concentrate on which with time I think he could do very well at.

My solution to 2 problems.

For those wanting Anthony have you considerd who would go out for him and what Collingwood would lose if they were to bring him in for someone? I'm curious becasue while I think that Anthony's best postion is as a third tall, but I am just skeptical as to if it would work or not, Anthony's lack of tackling pressure and chase worries me.

How did Dawes become a certainty in one match, the same match in which he got less of the ball and kicked less goals than Fraser, who is listed as a possible third tall on this list?

In answer to the question, we should play:

2 Talls - Cloke + 1
2 Rucks - Jolly + 1

At this stage, Dawes and Fraser are the +1's.

I'd be happy to have Anthony in the side at full fitness, without Dawes going out though.

Be interesting to see how they go about it, but I'm not keen on 3 talls either.

Dawes is far from a lock just yet, if his form flounders and JA is playing well at VFL, it'll be a straight swap

Anthony's chasing and pressure is better than any other KP forward at the club, but ok.

when he is fit, it's very good smiddaz123, I agree.

It needs to be as he has never been a high posession winner and doesn't seem to lead to the right areas or know how to cler space for the other forwards when required.

The big issue for JA at this stage is fitness, coming off a 50 goal season he really should be in the best 22 when he gets fit and I expect he will be

Maybe, my big issue with him is his speed and fitness, if he is played at FF this is less of an issue but if he is played as a third tall he could be pushing out someone who is more effective at providing these things, or offers something else. But then if he is played at FF he is a bit undersized, I like Anthony but I'm just not so sure he can work as a third tall as I am concerned with what is lost if he is to come in.

If that were true he wouldn't be playing in the VFL right now.

id have medhurst on the hf flank, cos he isnt doing much for us in the pocket and davis rotating in the middle being a clearance specialist.

and have fp anthony ff cloke fp rusling each 1 on 1 with their opponent 9/10 will win a contest (well anthony you doubt but we need him leading deep in the forward line)

dawes at chf

And when the ball hits the deck it gets run out with obsurd ease

anthony shows good defensive pressure and sometimes can go over the top.
rusling can create pressure, has been playing in defense so thats a massive part of his game.
cloke shows alot of presence and that doesnt mean medhurst will go down deep.

Malthouse rates disposals, always has. Antony's just as likely to have been dropped because he couldn't win the ball the first couple of rounds.

The whole thing with Anthony and defensive pressure is really bizarre. Either people think he's terrible at it or that he's very good at it. There seems to be no middle ground. I'm certainly in the second category, though he's been down a bit this year due to fitness.

I think people are fooled a little bit because JA chases outside his area - that is to say he chases even when there's little chance of actually making the tackle. He probably doesn't have the fitness to do this all the time, so he does have to get a bit smarter about it I think, but that's about it.

He certainly applies better pressure than Cloke (will tackle in close, but never chases) and Dawes (doesn't have the requisite agility).

I reckon Anthony got dropped cause he was dropping marks left and right. His defensive pressure was alright, but ultimately your job as a full forward is to kick goals, and if you can't take a mark it becomes pretty hard to do it.

Anthony got dropped because he is not fit. He missed the pre-season, had shoulder troubles and is now having ankle problems too. We learnt last year with Medhurst that its better to get it right than chase our tail all year.

Watch the Adelaide final from last year, where he essentially didn't touch the ball for 3 quarters and tell me his defensive pressure is no good. He chased for 3/4 like a man posessed and it was fantastic
