Hey look. A strong effort for the better part of 3 and 1/2 quarters produces a win. Damn it was cold there tonight. Reckon it was the coldest MCG game I've been too in a long time.

That's all I want to see every week from now on is a strong effort. No more games where we lose by 8 goals to average sides.

I reckon that's why Bucks locked them behind close doors after the game.

We will win next week.

So now I can't make a genuine comment!!
Here is another one just to upset you...
Blair and Sinclair are amongst my best together with Grundy, Treloar, Phillips, Marsh, Maynard and of course number 20

You forgot Smith.

Really enjoyed Phillips & Marsh's games tonight.

What happened to Perts 80,000 members? We can account for you but what about the other 60,000?

Was happy just to get the win, it was always going to be a grind as that's just Freo's style of play at the best of times let alone in wet/heavy conditions. There was a lot to like in tonight's game and it's great to see the team winning when you are sitting in the freezing cold trying not to lose feeling in your extremities.

Our defence looked much more settled with the additions of Brown, Williams, Marsh and Sinclair. They all compete exceptionally well man-on-man, but they also generally make the right decisions. Their disposal isn't always the best, but they tend to panic less than other options like Frost, Tooves, and Ox, who are all either lacking in composure, skill, or in Oxley's case, toughness.

Anyway, with Brown at full back, Williams and Sinclair in the pockets, and Reid and Howe doing their thing, we look pretty decent. The development of Marsh, Maynard and Smith is a bonus!

Good to have a win. I don't think we had any really bad players tonight. Aish & Varcoe perhaps weren't great. Very happy with the games of Marsh, Maynard, smith, Phillips etc. Treloar would have been bog for us if his disposal wasn't so sloppy. That honour goes to Grundy tonight imo. Thought he was excellent, even if it was against a couple of ashtrays.

It's not all about kicks and handpasses. Watch the game again and take note of how many tackles and smothers Aish and Varcoe put on.

Very good to get the result tonight. We were on top for most of what looked like a poor day for footy and both teams down on skill and confidence.
For most of the game we had Freo playing well behind the ball, which means they kept clogging our backline - which did make our disposal look even worse because there was rarely any space.

We did have trouble offensively in the 3rd, but still kept the Dockers to just 2 goals for the quarter, but then came out on fire again in the 4th and quickly put the game out of reach. Our response in that 4th quarter was great to see, because at 3QT it did look like we had dropped confidence again and might let them back into the game.

Treloar has been our best player by far this year. He is still making the odd poor decision, or poor disposal, but keeps his head up and keeps running all night. It wasn't a "great game" per say, but he was probably still best of the lot.

Grundy - was only against Clarke, but was his best ruck game I've seen in a while, and as per usual he just keeps getting around the ground and getting the footy. Can't ask much more from a ruck.

Howe, Reid and Marsh were all very good off the backline, and although the stats don't show it, I think Greenwood and Blair both played really important roles.

Happy for Cloke. took some good steps back today, and along with Cox and White each played a role up front. Still need to see more from the 2 more experienced guys, but it was positive tonight. And I reckon Cox is the unluckiest forward in history when it comes to getting free's from the umps. (I might be using a bit of hyperbole).

The bad:
Obviously we were still far from slick tonight, partly due to the weather, and partly due to how many men Freo had behind the ball. But there were plenty of times when Freo could've damaged us but didn't... which can probably be put more down to how low on confidence they are, rather than how good our perceived pressure was. (which was still very good though).

Pendles again had a poor game (maybe just by his standards?), and we've had to say that too many times this year. It's not anywhere near Cloke levels, but it is disappointing. Seems to be trying to use his finesse as a way to make up for a drop off in intensity. This year we need to be seeing grunt and constant effort from our Captain as an example to the rest of the team of what is required. It is the reason Cloke was dropped, and it is something that has worried me about some of Pendles' efforts this year. I would really like the tricky stuff (which is great when it's working) saved for when we get back to playing hard for 4 quarters of games (which we are far from doing).

When our defensive pressure is working as well as it did tonight - we need to take advantage of it with good decisions and efficient disposals going forward. It is harder when the opposition plays behind the ball, but we have to expect that when our game plan is working well, and we have to learn how to consistently get through it... it is still a problem.

**** me, people still giving Varcoe a pat on the back.

He aint a kid, he is a senior player and is giving us nothing offensively and is bog average defensively.

Kicks out on the full, dropped marks, missed tackles and no impact on the game

Why does he get such an easy run from so majy on here?

Good to get a win, a lot of up side though, Pendles, Sidey & Trealor (up till 3rd qtr) were average. Notice how we bombed a lot and kick to Freo players a fair bit...need to still get our structures right, if only Adams, Swan, Elliott and Moore were up and about,

Are you calling me fat enough to account for 2000 as I presume that there were some Freo supporters there.
Forgot to mention I thought that Crisp was very good early.

According Bucks in the Presser, Pendlebury was under the weather.
Played well below his best maybe that is why.

He's not the Varcoe from the start of the season so obviously the injury has affected him, be it mental or physical, but he's not quite the same player.

Fair point, he was quite poor tonight but it's almost taboo to say that after he became a fan favourite last year

Disappointing crowd I don't care about weather or position on the ladder.

Never been to the MCG and I could hear the players & the crowd yelling out at the other end of the ground. It felt like a VFL game.

I thought you didn't watch the game?

He's playing injured yet again. Nothing to do with desire - that's an insult.

I think there are times when Pendles wishes he was playing with the 2010-11 Pies, and there are some decisions he is making with the ball that look great when you're dominating but don't work when you're not... and IMO those are times when it looks like the desire to be fancy, takes over the desire to put in effort.

He didnt even play at the start of the season!!

He is a senior player who is barely contributing, yet people on this board treat him as if he is one of our best.

I dont get it.

Whenever his purple patch was then, he hasn't been the same since getting injured, and with 2 hammys is it? he may be struggling with the confidence to push beyond a certain limit.
