Clearly the Pies have put a no bid side agreement in this deal with GWS.

The AFL really should step in and ban that and punish teams, but it's hard to prove. It tampers with the draft and punishes 16 other sides.

Clever from the Pies tho because it's changed Daicos' from being bid on at 2 to being bid on at 4.

Yep, Daicos has been firmly inside the top 3 for two years.

Collingwood obviously thought that they'd be pushing for finals in 2021, hence what we got back from GWS for the 2021 first rounder was the equivalent to pick 9 or 10. It makes absolutely no sense to make the deal in the first place if we thought there was the remotest chance Daicos was still there to be bid on.

GWS with us finishing 2nd last and I think doing the honourable thing have allowed us to also get effectively pick 45 and 50, Poulter and McMahon. Now becuase of Daicos points we traded out of the 2nd rd so I say that is Poulter. So that leaves pick 45 (close to 3rd rounder we would have had) so that leaves McMahon and pick 50 where we are better off for the Daicos pick but in hindsight we could have traded for Cerra instead potentially or a future 1st in 2022 with that pick. We are slightly ahead because of that trading but in general but we could have been a lot further ahead in hindsight so I guess that is a loss. Had we finished last it would have been a disaster. So Cerra/future 1st plus probably a 2nd vs McMahon, pick 50 and Bulldogs future 3rd. That isnt really an argument of what would be better. Hindsight is a terrible thing. I think the pies have come out ok the last two years but after some terrible mistakes in list management.

When you burn four top ten picks between 2014-2017 for Treloar, De Goey and Stephenson and two late first rounders in 2018 and 2019 for Beams to be left with only a certified creep potentially still playing for you in 2022 losing pick 2 for below market value isn’t that big of a deal to be fair. Kind of like the Dees from 2007-2012, except that our players were either shit, poorly developed or chronically injured rather than ****ing morons or victims or club orchestrated purges

What's Callaghan got to do with it? Who is to say if we had pick 2 we would take him? Or that North don't bid on Daicos in that scenario? Who is to say if we still held the pick we would not have put the cue in the rack early and not beaten Richmond in rd 18 or Weagles in rd 20. Finished bottom. Horne-Francis and Daicos? it's a worthless exercise. so no, it will take all of 100 minutes of football in round 1 to forget about it. And will be long forgotten when Nick Daicos is rising star in 2022!!

Finish 12th and above and it’s an astute trade.

We’re shitting all over the Pies list management here, but all the team really needed to do was finish above 17th. Given they just played Finals it was a safe bet, even with the players they lost.

List management made enough of their own mistakes, and the team decided to force another on them

Callaghan was the standout player available at that pick and to say the Pies wouldn't have taken him is just fantasy. Numerous clubs offered up deals to get into that pick solely just to take him. Zero chance that Andrews, Rachele, Ward or any other player goes at pick 2

That's where you are wrong. Pies are going to be reminded all throughout Callaghan's career that they messed up with that trade. The only way this won't happen is if he turns out to be a spud and gets delisted in the coming years.

IMO the Pies didnt totally fail here, they just missed out on a chance to double up.

Look at their draft Diacos, Cooper Marley and Arlo Draper.

I would be stoked with those pick ups.

The downside is they could have had Callaghan and absolutely smashed the draft. Instead they just had a bloody good one.

Always a gamble trading your future 1st. Didn't pay off for the Pies, but I like the high risk high reward strategy. It's actually worked really well for the Dees. Pies just misread where their list was at. Could have paid off nicely had they played finals this year. But hey, they get Daicos who looks to be a talented kid, so I'm sure they aren't too upset about it..

It does amaze me how often comments like this are made in season, completely ignoring that clubs have a trade period ahead of them to remove the need to go into points deficit.

Maybe Ned Guy did something smart and threw it in just in case? GWS would've agreed because it costs them nothing. Unusual for Collingwood of late but maybe someone had the idea of adding some insurance. GWS could've finished bottom 4. Daicos could've got injured and slid down outside the top 5. There's a number of scenarios that were possible apart from the Pies finishing 2nd last.

GWS thought they were getting pick 8-12 for picks 24 and 30. It was a really good trade for the Giants even if it was pick 12! They would've gladly agreed to an extra condition of a non bid.

There's no good reason for the Giants not to bid on Daicos. They've actively hurt their chances - no matter how small - in a fiercely contested competition by not bidding on Daicos. They can talk all they like about not taking one dimensional mids, and even if Daicos was one dimensional I wouldn't believe it.
