Pies handed a 'dream' draw

Still remember 10 of our 26 games in 2010 being against the other top three teams from both the preceding year (2009) who then backed up by finishing top four in 2010.

And still we were told we had a dream draw by everyone else.

They see us MCG'n. So they go hatin'...

Seriously, it's an annual thing.

As sure as Caro talks about off field shit, as sure as Hughesy is unfunny, as sure as Sam Newman is a relic, as sure as the tides ebb & flow, as sure as Eddie says Side by side, as sure as Eddie wasn't on that bus, as sure as the sun comes up, as sure as my digestive system has a problem with corn, as sure as some idiot bites about daylight saving ruining his drapes, as soon as OA talks bollocks, as soon as ..............

That was literally it. Wasn’t it eleven games at the MCG to finish the season that has everyone up in arms?

Unfortunately people forgot we earned the right to host the last four games, and played either co-tenants or Victorian sides that had opted to play us there with the exception of the Crows iirc.

I might use your post in my class today. The danger of too many commas!

From what I'm hearing it does sound like a pretty cushy draw...but it really all depends when we meet certain teams etc.

Like this year we played Carlton on the back of 3 games in 12 days. We were clearly flat. With ANZAC Day on a Wednesday this year, it could mean we yet again will come off a really short break.

At the end of the day, the draw has a huge bearing on where a side finishes on the ladder. There is no doubt that the Tigers had a dream draw this year. With a harder draw, they probably just slip out of the top 4 and lose the double chance.

I've always been a bit of a sceptic about how much of an advantage a "dream draw" is in terms of wins and losses. For a start what may seem easy now may turn difficult in 2018 e.g. Drawing Richmond x2 this time last year.

The bottom line for me is though really the difference will be at most a better chance of one more win. For instance change our dream draw for 2018 to an average draw by giving us 2 matches against top six teams and 2 v bottom six as opposed to 1 and 3. We would achieve that by say playing Sydney twice and Carlton once. Let's say we are an 20:80 chance of beating the Swans and a 60:40 chance of beating Carlton. It's that match that changes us from a dream draw to an average draw and all it does really is give us a better chance of winning one match. Not even a guarantee of one match so I don't really see a huge difference

I understand there are other nuances that go into making draws harder and easier, interstate trips, 6 day breaks etc but the big variable is who you play twice and I don't think it makes anywhere as big a difference as many believe.

I think a good team will win a premiership regardless of the draw. But I think a good draw can be the difference between coming top 4 or top 8...or slipping just outside the 8.

No doubt Richmond snuck into the 8 this year because of how good their draw was. I reckon they would've won the flag regardless because they had so much momentum....but you never know. An extra game may have meant another injury, suspension, fatigue etc.

Our 2012 draw was (based on strength of double up opponents) literally the hardest any team has ever received, want to guess how it was described by the footy media?

After seeing our draw I thought of this :D:p

Mick Malthouse is confident Carlton will be successful in 2015, saying hard to see team lose
Sam Edmund, Herald Sun
March 20, 2015 1:19pm

MICK Malthouse has claimed he is struggling to find a game Carlton loses this year, with the Blues coach urging his men to play without inhibition.

In an overwhelmingly positive address at today’s season launch, Malthouse demanded his young group show their “X-factor” and take on all-comers.

“I shouldn’t say this in front of the cameras, but it’s very, very difficult to see where we’re going to lose a game,” Malthouse said to much applause

The first 6 games are key there.

Can't come out of them with anything less then 3 wins. We simply aren't good enough to chase down a final spot from 2-3 games down, even early in the year.

Start 3-3 or better and we can play finals. Anything worse and we'll have to go on a winning streak mid season to have any chance.

Tough(ish) finish to the season too. Swans, Tigers, Port and Dockers in Perth. We will need to be in the top 8 with 6 games left to have any chance.

Reckon our range is 9 to 13 wins, once again.

I can't see how that is a dream draw.

Hawthorn, GWS and Adelaide in the opening 4 rounds....then only a 4 day break between ANZAC Day to play the reigning premiers in Richmond.

That's a terror start to the year. Carlton should be the only clear winnable one for us.

It makes the Hawthorn clash terribly vital. We need to win that.
