why does the afl allow betting agencies the first goal kicker bet is beyond me, its so open to corruption this is just tip of the iceberg. it would happen everyweek but done more discreetly than shaw. my sons mate was drafted this year and they talk on facebook if he tells him ive got a game this week in the forward pocket my son goes down and has ten bucks on him to kick the first goal, whats the diff?

Yeah man, like, it's a total conspiracy bro..

You moron, I'm just saying that if the AFL had any guts and wanted to make a statement on the issue then Shaw should have missed finals. Instead they have made it that he conveniently comes back for week one, a pissweak penalty to say the least.

So, a conspiracy to have him back just in time for the finals. Hmmm, clever.

It's probably tied up with 'fixture gate' somehow. Yep that's it, Shaw doesn't have to travel at all in the second part of the year!

It's a fix!

My previous guffawing stands.

2 quick questions.

1) How do you use drugs (legal or not) without having possession of drugs?

2) How is reference to drugs relevant to illegal betting on sport?

Are you serious...

Using is an offence plus you would have to possess them to use them (and before you start injecting into or similar is also an offence)

Dont know the legal ruling but logically:

How would they know you possessed them just because you tested positive?

You could claim that someone mugged you and injected you with an unknown substance.

And no this wouldnt work for AFL footballers testing positive to PED's as theyd be expected to report the incident.

I guess they wanna make an example of it now before it gets out of hand.

Honestly, Shaw would have known he shouldnt have put it on but would have thought "surely no one will find out"

Make an example of, ridiculous to say the least. Let's see:

Heath Shaw - $20 ($10) non winning bet cops 14 weeks + $20,000 fine

Travis Tuck - Illegal Drugs, three strikes = 12 weeks suspension, can still train but must undergo rehabilitation.

I am not condoning the behaviour of either but the AFL is once again being reactionary.

Can someone also explain why Maxwell has not received the same punishment. I acknowledge that he supposedly wasn't aware of the bet but it doesn't change the fact that the bet was laid. I think a fine would of been sufficient for both and counselling for gambling

AFL got completely right, 8 weeks for stupidity seems harsh but it you cant let a player diminish the integrity of the game. Collingwood have the depth to cover him and have shown in the past that they will stick by their players.
Will be interesting to see how quick he gets his spot back.

Here is what I don't get.

The AFL, in the wake of the NRL match-fixing scandal last season and previous problems with players betting on match outcomes, established an integrity commission to work with the betting agencies in terms of information about players gambling on the result of matches and various betting types available in matches. Demetriou and Anderson were concerned that players were potentially gaining from information about matches.

So, despite all of this, Shaw has decided to lay the punt on Maxwell and got his mates to do the same. Just how stupid can Shaw be. It's one thing to get caught out. It's another thing to get caught out knowing the guidelines (unless he didn't read/understand them).

The difference is that your son is not playing for the team. Both these players Heath being the main offender bet on his own game and his own team. You cannot bet on AFL full stop as evidenced a couple of years ago with Keiran Jack. You definetly cannot bet on your own team. Your son doesnt play AFL I dont care if he bets on two flies racing with insider info from one of the flies.

Who cares less about this crap.
Why ruin a man's season for something that could never have an effect on the result of the game it's just another case of the media picking on footy to sell tickets.

Has Eddie announced Shaw's sacking yet?

There's no additional penalty from the club. They feel the league suspension and fine, plus the very real possibility he could miss out on being part of another Premiership side (8 weeks of no football at any level will be hard to come back from), is punishment enough.

I am so angry at Heath right now! One stupid action puts the season at risk for all his team mates. The penalty is not too harsh, it's just a ridiculous act...

I'd imagine Maxy may have words with those family members. Not sure where the people on here are coming from saying he should be stripped of the captaincy though.

Well that's obvious considering the penalty is extremely severe for the offence committed.

$5,000 fine and a chance to freshen himself up for finals (8 weeks) is an extremely severe penalty.

If he was a cricketer or soccer player he would be looking at atleast a 4 year ban or up to a lifetime ban.
