This is probably all coming from the Nick Stevens camp...still upset we called him straughnie.

heyy...it worked though :thumbsu:

You've come into some great form since then Nick :thumbsu:

Nick Stevens is a prime example of how a website can work wonders for a player. Without public criticism he could be languishing in the two's.

One coach, who did not want to draw attention to his players, yesterday said: "They get real nasty."

The coach said he was aware of one player receiving "particularly scathing" criticism and he had approached the player and asked if he was aware of it.

"Thankfully, he said it didn't matter because he didn't read it, but bloody oath, it could affect the player," the coach said. "It's a serious issue, a major issue.

"Even if one player gets depression, or his form falls away, it could end his career."

One club official last night confirmed the coach had directed some of his players to stop reading sites.

"Yes, we have suggested to some players they avoid online fan sites," the official said.
Reckon it was Tuesday with Terry.

Richard Tambling is an example of a player who has been affected by what this article talks about.

Last year he was even dropped after a terrible game which "coincidently" was against Hawthorn. He didn't start playing good football until he spent time with a psychologist and was able to get his mind right.

As for Robbo, I hate hearing him on radio, don't mind his articles, but he seems to have an "I'm always right" kind of ego. I also hate it when he writes articles about Big Footy because it's all being written because of his ego and he acts like he's never heard of the site. Reminds me of the loud kid at school who forced his opinions on everyone else through sheer volume.

How do you know any of this? You joined the site this month...apparently.

Wallace: "Hey Richard, have you seen that thread on Bigfooty? The one that says you're gay, as soft as butter, a hack, an underachiever, not fit to shine Franklin's boots, not a footballer's arseh*le, trade bait and a disgrace to the Richmond jumper?"

Tambling: "Um ... no?"

Wallace: "Oh OK, just seeing if you were aware of it. I was concerned it could affect your confidence. Well, see ya!"

I think this is the doing of Terry Wallace personally...

Harvey wouldnt give a crap about this type of thing. If I was a AFL player id be much more upset about Robinson writing articles trying to get me traded then anything a fan said about my performances. Ones directly trying to effect their personal lives and the other is a opinion

Talk about being a hypocrite

Which club is going to sack people for leaking info. I think some clubs should stop having meetings in cafes, its amazing the little bits of info you can pick especially when they go to the same place all the time. Collingwood ones are always gossiping to each other in public.

You might even say that both are opinions, the only difference being that Robinson's is paid for.

^ Exclusively "jocks" play sports, and exclusively "nerds" use computers?

What are you, a 17-year-old American boy trapped in 1991? :D

1991 I wish! Parachute pants and undercuts were all the rage...

More to the point I think they're being a little precious, don't you think? And more so the article is written by Robinson who on numerous occasions is bagged on this very forum. Think he might be trying to get one back...

To those of you saying 'They're professional sportsmen - they should be able to handle it', let me just say - you are idiots!

It would be one thing opening the Sun and reading a beat-up by clowns like Mike Sheahan who are paid to write garbage. Anyone can see that it isn't worth worrying about.

BUT to read comments from the very people you think are supporting you - your 'supporters' - ridiculing you and saying you should be dropped would be extremely hard to take for a lot of people. Especially young players who are still not fully matured - imagine reading from your own 'supporters' that you never should have been drafted to your club because you aren't 'tough enough' at the ball or that you 'were nowhere near as good as player x, y, z who was drafted after you'.

To all of you keyboard heroes, I'd like to see how you would react if you opened a thread with 100 people saying you were useless at your job...

Both are opinions yes but I know which one has the bigger influence on a players psychology. Not sure how Scott Lucas would of felt picking up the paper with someone trying to farm him off to Sydney

Id get another job! (if it rattled me that much)

In related news, players are to wear protective earmuffs whilst playing, to protect them from hurtful commentary hurled from beyond the fence by fans.

Also, between games and training sessions, players are to be kept in concrete bunkers 100 metres underground and given only Enid Blyton novels to read.

The new PC versions, no more names like Dick and Fanny. :D

Some of the things said on this site can go overboard at time, though most are valid.

I couldn't help but notice the irony in the article that a bunch of Jocks are getting upset that thousands of nerds behind computers, are saying negative things about them

One of the funniest things I've read for ages :thumbsu::thumbsu:

I would suggest that negative comments from Herald Sun "experts" are more widely read than forum sites and would be more hurtful to a player.

A player might just happen to see a negative headline while perusing the paper.....but he would have to actually log onto BigFooty to see any negative comments written about him. More than likely it'd be the former.

Also - does it really matter that we're anonymous????? Talkback callers are anonymous and radio stations would be out of existence without them.

I've heard some pretty scathing attacks on players from the media. Would Dal Santo, Gehrig or Harvey feel any better about the attacks on them this year from radio stations or newspapers than they do about attacks from BigFooty? The attacks from the media might be worded nicer than anything written here, but they are still saying things that could be extremely upsetting to the players. In fact you could argue the critisism from mainstream media, most likely written by experienced journalists or respected ex-players and published to be read by thousands, would cut much deeper than any exaggerated critisism from some nerd on the internet.
