Players who had it but then lost it

This would be better judged after players have finished their careers, there are such things as injuries and form slumps ffs.

Dylan Jessen, See state camps and National squads for SA, won many games off his own boot in the juniors and Reserves at SANFL level, found another side of life, Easier and pays better... was once a champion bloke, still is ok if you can except what he is now doing, would have played AFL football and would have starred!

May be an early call, but Daniel Pearce for the Power.
Rising Star winner then a really down 2nd year.
Port fans will be hoping he can bounce back in 09.

Actually, his 2007 was almost statistically identical to his 2006:

2006 - 19.63 dpg + 12 goals in 22 games
2007 - 18.86 dpg + 14 goals in 21 games

He didn't kick on and noticably improve as expected, but to say he was 'really down' isn't true.

Fair call. :thumbsu:
After seeing those stats maybe "really down" was a bit harsh.

 he debuted in the mid 90s.. and was at his peak in 99/00. i'd say it only went downhill from there, with the exception of maybe one season.
I think I know a bit more about Kouta than you do mate

Kouta started his career at Carlton in 1990, debuted in 1992 and was All Australian in 1995.

His father was ill throughout 1998 and eventually died which effected Kouta for most of that year and throughout the first half of 1999.

Anthony Koutoufidies said:
After his death, the weirdest feeling for me was going to games without him. It was really hard to accept. But I always picture winning the 1995 Grand Final and seeing how proud my dad was. He got to witness a premiership - he'll take that with him forever.

His illness really affected my performance that year. I went to pre-season training but all I could do was think about him being sick and I just wanted to get home and see him. I did not train well at all and had one of my worst years ever footy-wise. I probably should have been dropped, but the club kept faith in me.

I hit rock bottom but I thought my dad would not want to see me like this so I was determined to become a better footballer. The next three years were some of the best footy I've ever played. I worked extremely hard and I basically did it for him because I just wanted to make him proud.

His latter years were far from poor. He never reached the same heights as he did before but most other players would be more than happy with what Kouta produced after injury took him down.

He didn't "lose it", injury robbed him of being his absolute best but he never lost it late in his career.

i think this needs to be defined.

it means players that were elite and within 2 seasons completely lost all for.

the two that immediately come to mind are mercuri and mckernan.

Agree 100%.

Mercs was a superstar in '99 & '00 - I think his brother died, pretty sad really.

McKernan also, was a gun around '96-'99, was an embarrasment at Carlton...

His first year at the Blues was very good and he won the B&F (40 goals + 11 touches and 11 hit outs per game alternating between ruck and forward).

He declined pretty sharply after that, however.

I must say I tend to agree with the notion that Pearce has gone down since blazing away with the rising star. Ok, his stats may be consistently in the late teens (2008 18.7 dpg and 10 goals in 21 games) but i personally believe his influence has been curbed dramatically.

Personally i think he had the ability to turn into a star player but seems this year to have faltered with his decision making, his ability to read the play and his ability to break off a pack and take control of situations - all things i think he was better at in 2006. Its not to say he cant go back to 2006 form, but i do think, from an outsiders point of view, he has lost that "it" he had in his first season.

no need to be a defensive, cocky twat.;)
my mistake on kouta; i thought i recalled him debuting in the '95 premiership season, but must've heard wrong.

thats the thing....cyril rioli could average 10 more possies per game next season but if his influence on the game isn't there like it was this year then it won't mean anything

You are missing the whole point of the thred.

Kouta never completely lost form.

His form dipped in his last 2 years but he was still a valuable player.
