Review Positives and Negatives from round 7: Carlton

Positives:
Elliot is now officially THE No1. elite small forward in the league imo and has learned the art of consistency. He is a genuine star!
Langdon.. Langdon... pick 65... star... best first 7 games I can think of in black and white.
Witts and Grundy continue to stand up and contribute.. tonight they were both very good.
Pendles, Swan, Beams... keep on keeping on... Beams was quiet except for the 4 goals ..lol
Cloke.. Looked good again.. back to some form and hopefully it'll stay for more than 1 week
Buckley... thought the team set up nicely behind the play in the first 3 quarters and the rolling rubgy maul goal now seems to be a feature of our game plan.. it's cool to watch.
Blair and Goldsack... two much maligned fringe players are contributing bucketloads and thoroughly deserving their spots.
Williams... nice first up game.. he's a star too.
Depth... lost 4 backline players this week.

Negatives:
Adams continues to look very B grade. I know it's early days but he was brought across as an established afl quality player.. Not seeing it!
Kennedy... I know he was sub but he failed to impact in the way I'd like. He had a chance to take it on and run into an open goal but chose to bomb a long one instead. Didn't have the confidence to take it on.
Blazing for goal... some selfish acts.. eg Grundy bombing for goal instead of passing to Ball who was alone at the top of the goal square.
Poor finishing... another 20 behinds game

Positives

Witts and Grundy are awesome. Witts was super impressive last night.

Langdon, Frost, Marley were awesome down back

Goldsack and Blair are best 22 at the moment with their pressure

Negatives

Adams was poor and disposal was shocking.

Harry had a very quiet game barely got into it at any stage

Sidebottom been very good for us all season but had an off night last night

Positive: Up until the final quarter we had conceded 4 goals in our past 6 quarters of footy, all this with a makeshift defence. That's premiership material.

Negative. Bookending this is 14 goals in 2 quarters, whilst you have to take this with a grain of salt as 8 of them were inconsequential, it shows we need to improve our concentration as the year goes on.

Adams disposal was poor and that was already known, im sure the club are working on it. But I feel we are to harsh on his performance last night. He was chucked in the backline last night and bucks said in the presser thats the first time adams has ever had to play back, hasnt even trained there. His best game is in the middle getting the hard ball. We can Judge him when he gets his chances there. He has also been good over gws for a young player but he is still a future pick for us and wont play his best footy just yet

The last quarter fade out was very disappointing but not very surprising for 3 reasons:

1. As has been pointed out we are a very young team and quite a few of them dropped off their concentration and intensity.

2. The bye was coming up and I think that played a part.

3. More than anything, I think we were spent due to the fact that half our normal back line was out injured and our midfielders and forwards had to work their arses off to work back to help out. Our whole game plan was very defensive in structure with many players behind the ball. It was great coaching but very exhausting.

I was at the game and predicted the fade out and thought we would just trot in the last quarter. It was bad but I completely understand it.

The three quarters prior were pretty special.
To present that last quarter and still win handsomely against the spawn of satan says a lot.

We need to build toward playing four quarters like the first 3.....then...

Well lets save that for September.

Positive: Tackling, pressure, Elliott, the young ruckman developing well, midfield again winning the ball well, Langdon is going to be a star of be keeps this up.

Negative: Last quarter fade out again, could have won by 60+, Adams was disapointing but I'll give him time no need to jump on him already to much, kicking inside 50 to Cloke and for goal as usual.

The weariness of our players in the last quarter was obvious even on TV. They could hardly raise a trot, and so Carlton players finally were able to settle and deliver the ball. I believe that this is the experience that Buckley was referring to. The young players don't have the endurance of older ones. They can only get better, and so even the last quarter fade out can be seen as a positive.
At present, Port Adelaide are running all over opponents in the last quarter. I don't expect they will in September. They probably can't play much better than they are at the moment, while we clearly have a long way to go to be at our best.
Jamie Elliott's kicking has been a pleasant surprise for me. I clearly judged it too early. While he can't kick a set shot from 50, he doesn't miss from 40. His passing is getting better too. The low flat passes that were missing targets last year suddenly look deadly. Give credit to the coaching for playing him all over the place, so that he isn't physically smashed by a thug defender able to sit on him.

The only negative I saw was the continuing umpiring attack on Grundy. I can see that he gets free kicked for crossing the imaginary vertical from the ball to the ground and "blocking" his opponent. I'm not sure why this is regarded as an illegitimate tactic, but accept that it is. He gets the odd opponent high and that is OK too. He must have killed an umpire in a previous life though, because he is repeatedly penalized for competing strongly, and his opponents are allowed to push him in the back at will. The umpiring attack on McCaffer seems to be one of those media driven fashion things, and not so concerning.

Marley Williams return is so very welcome.

POSITIVES---Pressure was good. Tackling was good. Young defense stood up again. Mid's defensive pressure was good.
NEGATIVE---Last qrt fade out again. Daisy not put to ground properly when he up-ended Luke Ball after smothering it with his face.

There will be other days - do you think he's looking forward to playing against us again?

Just pinching myself about how well we are playing. Seriously, Tommy Langdon, so cool, so poised, so reliable. Goldsack is playing like a man possessed. Loved what Pendles did to Daisy in the 3 qrt. Witts and Grundy - is that really happening? And Cloke has turned the corner - I'm calling it.
Edit: forgot to mention Jamie Elliott. How could I? The kid is a star.

Uh-huh. ;)

I thought he looked pretty good last night, just used it very poorly. He'll be a good player, not doubt about that.

Positives:

1. The improvement in Moneybags, Witts, Langdon, Sidebum, & the Ice-man.
2. We won.
3. Carlton lost.
4. Malthouse is a little closer to a new career as "sausage boy" & this game was the nail in the coffin for the "Bucks is not the right coach" chestnut.
5. Fabulous start to the weekend & the pride I felt for supporting such a young side that is dishing out arse-whippings.

Negatives:

1. We don't play Carlton again next week
2. It kills me to see Daisy as a Navy Blue villain
