My mother-in-law is amazing btw, incredible woman, australian of the year or order of australia or something like that. Wonderful garden too, **** Don Burke.
I feel inspired to write to Mr Burke with some advice contradicting his bay tree care advice or something. Just to see what happens

Your mother-in-law should have that one framed! A thing of pride

We could all be pen pals.
I had two growing up. Julie from Wisconsin. I sent her a photo when I was about 9 with a pony, and she wrote back and said some of the boys in her class reckoned I was hot which freaked me out (American kids grew up much faster than us in certain ways back then) but when I realised she was basically being nice I recovered.

My best penpal was Gianfranco from Naples. He was awesome and could fit lots of words on an aerogram.

For how long were you pen pals?

Probably about 5 years for both. 8 to 13/14 or so.

I wish we hadn’t all gone teenager and sulky because I really would like to have met them. We were pretty good friends really

Feeling connected is a nice thing.

It was a really nice program - or programs. There were charity types that linked up children to write to each other. Can’t remember how - I assume you sent in a profile and got matched somehow. I remember Gianfranco was really happy to have an English speaking penpal because he liked English in school and letters are a nice way to practice a second language

There's something nice about writing letters, too. Feels quite soothing to me.

You made me think - my birthday last year my Godmother sent me a lovely gift which was a silver bracelet. But the loveliest thing about it was she sent it with a letter about how it had been given to her in the late 60s and she’d always enjoyed it and hoped I did too. But the nicest thing is that the letter was handwritten and folded up inside a birthday card. Prior to that, I can’t remember my last hand-written letter.

There's definitely something special about them. I used to spend my new year eves writing them, but I've stopped doing that, now. Perhaps the letter made the gift extra nice, too?

Totally did. I mean email, sms and comedy cards from online can be really nice, but a wet ink letter was a surprise

I don't think I've ever thrown out a handwritten letter. They're great.

I can do my signature fine because that comes up a bit, but I so seldom write with a pen that I honestly don’t think I could pick my own handwriting anymore.

This is all strangely timely and relevant. I left Government work a couple of years back, but got temporarily headhunted to oversee this regulatory case involving fraudulent documents, false witnesses signatures on stat decs. all manner of shit going back 4 years. It’s been really engrossing but I’m fairly glad in some ways that it’s a three-month contract because the whole thing is also depressing and gross and while I think it’s a good thing to try to stop nasty people from being nasty, it sort of wears you down.

Yeah my handwriting has transformed pretty dramatically in the last ~10 years.

Really makes you think.
