Thomas does some very nice classy things. Guy is gonna rip it apart in the second half of the year once he gets some continuity into his game.

Murph just doesn't look like Murph... In 2011 he was routinely running in space with the ball after evading a would be tackler but he just seems to get caught more often than he gets free these days.

Buckley looks a bit tentative with his disposal and touch. Guy will bust a nut all day but he just needs to polish up the skills.

100%. Dashing out of the backline is useless if you don't spot up a target. I'd rather you kick it OOF than get intercepted.

Ellard has shown more playing Armfield's role. Also has superior footy smarts like you noted. Long term, Lucas and Docherty have more raw ability than Armfield. Would also include Josh "next whipping boy" Bootsma who needs more time.
Pretty well agree with this although I see Ellard being used more as a small forward if Yarran is regularly going to be played further up the field.

I can't wait to see what Docherty can bring to the team, but alas I think he will be doing some time in the VFL before he sees any senior action given his badly interrupted pre-season.

Went to the game on Friday, so I thought I'd better chime in with some observations...

Watson is lord of the backline, this dude pretty much marks everything that comes his way. He didn't really pull out many long passes however most of his kicks were pin point and set up some solid run along the boundaries.

Buckley gets a lot of the ball playing as a backman, but as many have noted here already he doesn't always use as best he could. He seems to run 10 metres and then ends up kicking a 5 metre air ball. You can see what Mick is trying to get him to do, but he's just not quite there yet. It will come though, he just needs to gain some confidence in his ability because as the VFL watchers would have seen last year, he really does have beautiful skills.

Scotland struggled and uncharacteristically missed some easy targets, but you can still he is still blowing out some cobwebs. People have been critical of him this pre-season, but when the real stuff begins he'll be the one taking the bone crunching marks and setting up our attacks between the arcs. He's still an important player for us.

I feel Everitt is going to be an underrated gem for us. He covers a lot of ground between the flanks, and usually uses his height to advantage in marking contests. I think his best role is probably wing/half-forward.

Cripps was someone that I was very impressed by. He plays a lot like Jobe Watson, he has that unique grip of the footy whilst running. He did well in some tight situations. I think he's actually a good chance for round 1.

Kreuzer looks the best I've seen him in awhile. Like everyone says, most supporters don't appreciate what he does when they aren't at the game. His goal kicking looks to be back to where it was earlier in his career, and seems to be moving a lot more freely.

Noticed this against Adelaide after Marc was caught. Normally quick enough to change direction and power past or through a tackle. Knee might be to blame. Look at Cooney who has had knee trouble in recent seasons.

It was great to be back on hallowed ground on Friday, especially after sneaking out the back door from work a bit early.

Thanks to all for the match summaries.

Watson: Agree that he has really taken a step up and is becoming the player that we all hoped for. Still early days but his hard work is really paying off. The other great aspect is that he seems extremely durable. We really need a defence that is there week-in-week-out to build that instinctive understanding with one another. I always worry about Jamo in this respect, and to some extent Hendo. Hopefully having some other big bodies around will help share that physical work load a bit too and minimise a few injuries.

Buckley: I am really enjoying seeing the young man emerge as a player. Lots of courage, prepared to take a risk, great work ethic and team commitment. These are great qualities especially in defence and I think he will soon take on that small defender role that we have needed for so long.

Everitt: It is clearly early days for him at Carlton. We've seen some really good work but we have also seen a few ordinary things too. I am sure that some continuity in his game time will see the latter ironed out. He seems to really think his way through situations and this will lead in further improvement. I must say that I prefer his work so far forward of centre rather than the back half. He is a very nice shot on goal and hard to match up on. I think a forward line of Hendo, Waite and him, the defence will be a bit more jittery. As a swing man I prefer Walker in the back half and using his running out of defence.

Waite: I actually love his stupidity (sometimes). What, I can't put my foot up into someone's head in the marking contest? He is looking dangerous and I just hope he stays on the park this year.

Rowe: He seems to be doing well and hats off for all he's been through. I think he does have considerable imitation though and will be in and out of the side a bit this year.

Menzel: Wow! Sure that was a howling error, but when he has the ball around goal, he makes the most of the opportunity. Will go a long way to filling the hole left by Eddie.

Curnow: This guys really has improved. Still has more to go but very impressed at his efforts.

Jeffy: seems a bit behind for this time of year but he has the talent to be devastating this year. He will get plenty of opportunities too.

Cripps: Very impressed already. Seems to have composure and I thought he did really well to get to almost all the contests at this stage of his career.

Bell and Robbo: need to build better awareness. They are almost always looking for metres gained (maybe there is not enough support around them?) but they need to improve their vision and their hands for the sort of role that they are playing.

Simmo: glad he is on my membership card this year. Legend!

White: Must say I was a bit disappointed. As mentioned though, he has missed a bit of footy of late and that is a really psychological injury o come back from.

Warnock: doing well and contributing a bit more around the round too. Still feel that his taps can still improve (i.e. to advantage). He sometimes seems so mindful of the opp ruck that he is losing position in relation to the ball. Seems to have a better understanding with some players (McLean and Murphy particularly) so hopefully this understanding builds with the others too. I would get young Cripps living in his house, catching his crumbs at the dinner table.

Tactics: We still seems to be getting burned by fast exits out of our defence and teams with a fast route to goal. Is this just a manning up issue?

Umpiring: when can we see incorrect disposal consistently interpreted? I would prefer to see good tackles rewarded, but don't really care if those taking on the game don't get pinged all the time....just consistency please. Can we get rid of that rule where a free is payed for being on the deck with a pack of guys on top. I hate this rule! Please pay it once of twice a game while in the back half of the game to encourage player sot clear it out, then forget the rule for most of the game.

Yeah I also saw plenty to be happy with - once I got over feeling annoyed about losing the game!

A lot of nostalgia, as always, when seeing a game at the old ground. Things like the old brick toilets, kiosk and bar under what is now the Richard Pratt Stand, now largely in disuse. They should turn it into a kind of interactive museum or something - what a day at the footy was like, 40-50 years ago. Especially if they priced the beer accordingly! :)

A game there is also tinged with sadness that we were forced to stop playing matches there in the first place, with even the "new" Legends Stand starting to look faded.

Good to be able to stroll into the clubhouse, gaze at the 16 cups on display, with four empty spaces for more cups before we'll have to start another wall. (Did you have a look Doggies fans? How's your cup display looking? Same as it has for the last sixty years I'm guessing. :p)

Just Watson becoming a powerful key defender will be massive for us when we're at full strength. Still learning to use that big kick to best advantage, but when he starts nailing them, Watto will be a missile launcher, launching deep strikes from half back directly into our attacking zone.

Too early to be disappointed in White I think. I was actually quite pleased with what I saw from him, especially considering what he's coming back from. That would spook me, knowing how close I came to potentially being paralyzed.

I was also frustrated by how easily the Dogs seemed to be able to move the ball down the field, especially since we weren't often able to do it going the other way. I hope there is some plan for this which we're just keeping under wraps for now...

The umpires seem very lax from what I've seen so far, in protecting players from being held/impeded when not in posession of the ball. Too often I saw our guys getting snagged, scragged and dragged before they could actually get the ball, and being taken out of the contest illegally. Because our guys were not doing that, the Doggies were getting a lot more clean possessions.

Really looking forward to seeing what the real thing looks like!

Pet theory on Menzel's howler.

Played for Centrals in SANFL. There strip is the tricolour of the dogs. Brain fart?
Did you see the Dogs' jumper on Friday? Some sort of graphic mess anything but a tricolour.

All I have to say is thank god it was a practice match. 70% shite, 20% bafflement and 10% satisfactory.

Having alot of players out concerned me being there's no more hitouts until Rd 1. Hopefully all have had enough match prep as we looked sluggish compared to the Bullies Friday night.
Im sure we'll be fine.

I'm beginning to think that maybe Army reached his peak in late 2012 & carried this through to the early part of 2013 & now may not have another level to go to. We may now be seeing the start of a downward curve in his career, which won't be helped by his partial loss of pace, which was one of his key attributes.

I think he is being overtaken by the likes of Cachia & Buckley, who, at the end of the day, have footy smarts that Army doesn't possess. I would like to be proven wrong, because Army in full flight does, as you have stated, bring some important attributes to our team, but on what he has displayed in the second half of last season & so far in the NAB Challenge & yesterday's game, he is no longer in our best 22.

Dennis just needs to get fit. I think a lot of people are forgetting how good he actually is when hes in form and at full speed. I'm certain he will eventually get back to full speed and have his pace back is just going to take time...

The concern for me is that he hasn't been at full speed since midway through last season. I would have thought any injury issues from 2013 would have been sorted at the end of the season.

I agree that at his best Army is an important player, not just for his speed, but also his ability to nullify opposition players & get forward & kick goals. I would love to see him playing like this again however I'm thinking his best might already be behind him & players competing for his position have already caught him, or worse, passed him by.

Well i would have thought so as well... and he had some work done and well without saying whats wrong (don't want to get told off for blabbering shit the club don't want to be known :S) it didn't work and it'll take him a lot longer to get right... But we will see, hopefully can get fit and push for a spot after a few rounds in...
Fair enough. In the meantime he is going to be on the fringe of our 22.

I hope he does. Dennis is a great team player & plays with the right attitude.

But I have to agree with MSR, for the moment until he is fit again he is probably fringe 22. A guy like Ellard probably offers more at the moment.

Sounds like the ones who we need to play well have so far. Always hard fought when playing in teams with a lot out. It'll be great to see all our best available together, even better if we can get a best 22 up and about. I'm sure our players are still on a harder than usual training program and more than likely would not have gone into the game fully rested. Like that some of the younger ones and newer ones are putting their hands up. Looking forward to round 1 even though we will have a few out, the ones who will be in for them will make it all the more interesting.
