Note that I wrote 'want' not 'will'. I can have hopes, and similarly can freely call a tactical decision like that 'daft'.

The Club has form in these kinds of decisions having a poorer strike rate and invested effort compared to most clubs.

He's going to be playing at both ends this season in the VFL, but he's most needed at AFL level as a backup defensive option.

We saw plenty of it during 2022: it sucks, and we've made zero acquisitions that will genuinely change this dynamic, particularly if the 22 is how people are predicting it.
All good Jim, was just noting a few things I’d seen or heard.

It does like like Kemp hasn’t been 100% down back so far, it was mentioned he’d had a couple of stints forward. Personally I’m ok with him playing down back, really I want him to spend most of his time in one position and try and get some continuity which is something he’s yet to be afforded at Carlton.

I don’t track the underage footy, but my understanding was HL went back when he was in a form slump? Are you saying you want him back because that’s where he plays his best footy or that’s where you think we need him more?

I guess we’ll see what happens with the relief ruck situation over the preseason games. Maybe I’m being naive or haven’t thought it through, but it kind of felt like an ok idea if a club has two stylistically different rucks who both aren’t elite. Sub the least effective ruck option and bring in a runner. Possibly means you want a little more emphasis on having some runners in the initial side to compensate for an extra ruck/ruck-fwd.

I think playing him down back is trying to eke out the smallest performance benefit for that part of the ground when we have a huge cast of players who could go close to his output.

He's creative and capable, I'd much rather him presenting at the ball or attacking the stoppage.

I think it's unclear what his best role is, beyond him currently lacking creativity as a forward. I just want to see him get some minutes in defence, because it's slim pickings back there.

That's hamstringing your substitution tactics way too much in my opinion, we need to be thinking a lot smarter than that given we have an overall need to improve our endurance and repeat efforts.

I would think we have more options as backup key defence then key forward. Durdin is a solid backup while Marchbank and Kemp can also play slightly undersized.

Up forward we only have Lemmey or TDK (who has never played exclusively forward and is needed in the ruck). Would be shocked if we dont develop Lemmey up forward this year.

Isn't Akuei a forward now? I think Kemp is more capable as a leading forward too. We also seem hell bent on playing a ruck in the forward line too, so where's the confidence in that?

All of our other genuine key defenders can also swing forward if absolutely necessary as well. I'm way more confident about our forward line holding up if going shorter than our backline, because we've got more talented attacking types in the F50 than we have natural defenders in the D50.

Injury aside- I reckon Pittonet and TDK would be certain starters as a ruck/forward ruck back in the hole rotation - especially with a 5 man bench. Good to see Kennedy and Hewett back into game sims - unexpected bonuses for me. Would love an update on Cuningham's situation from the Club....

I'm assuming we'll take in a squad of 30-35 and rotate them all through, basically everyone that's fit to play 30-60m on the day without injury concerns.
The rule has usually been best 22 + 4 green vest subs, so assume it'll stay the same.

Do we know if it's the senior team at 11am or the reserves up first?
I believe seniors first and then the reserves will be playing.

After speaking to the club this afternoon it will be the AFL seniors kicking off at 11am followed by the VFL reserves game, both scratch match games will be the traditional 4 quarter format, seniors 25 minute quarters, no time on…

The Sunday March 12th training day won’t unfortunately be the traditional family day of the past, the club wants to put on as many open day training sessions for the fans over the preseason leading up to start of the season…

No clear answer atm whether the family day will return but they could consider bringing it back sometime again in the near future, a wait and see scenario…

am I taking gaga pills? why on earth would they play the afl game before the vfl seconds?

I suspect a few players will play low minutes in the afl game (last quarter or so) and then play the majority of the vfl match straight after. Probably easier to manage then playing the matches the other way around. Happened last year against st kilda.

Again, Carlton’s official practice game is against Sydney and will be broadcast on Kayo. That article doesn’t refer to the “unofficial match simulation” against Collingwood.

They may broadcast it, as they did for our st kilda game last year, but that article only refers to the “official pre season games”

Foxtel advertising live and exclusive 17 games (the 9 official and 8 unofficial) starting Thursday February 23.

Sounds like they will all be on including the good guys versus Tom Browne's fathers pathetic mob.

Haven’t seen any advertising but will hopefully see it soon. Kayo only last season & expected again

Are you still seeing those ads? Seems the Foxtel TV guide is showing no games for next week.

They updated the guide for channel 505 today ish to show that it is playing a game at 10.00 a.m. next friday (north v richmond).

504 still showing as replays of old games, I assume that it will be updated soon?
Ah yes I see it now should have looked across all the channels rather than just FoxFooty. Hopefully they show all of the games played simultaneously.
